Thanks for these videos. I lived there (Forest Hills) in the 70's and took all those walks and jogging too. I know all those streets, lots of big changes and very congested now it seems. You covered a lot of territory in this one.

The Marshalls at the 63rd Drive subway station seen at 54:43 was an Alexander's department store when I lived in this area at Lefrak City in the 1980s, after I relocated from the Bronx. I lived in this area for about ten years. The walk from here on Junction Boulevard leads to Lefrak City, located at Horace Harding. Across the street from the Alexander's (where the benches are seen to the left) was a restaurant. The brown brick building on the left was Verizon. Where the new condominium and shopping complex currently is located across the Long Island Expressway from Lefrak City, was an open parking lot. In the 1980s, the Long Island Expressway underwent an expansion, with additional lanes added. The silver office building on the corner of Horace Harding and Junction Boulevard had been reclad sometime after I left the area. It previously had a buff-colored brick facade, with LEFRAK in green letters on the elevator penthouse. Lefrak City was built in the 1960s, by Samuel Lefrak. The architect was Jack Brown. The buildings were given names of countries. My building was named Canada, and my top-floor, one bedroom apartment faced Shea Stadium, which I walked to on nice days for a Mets game. Unfortunately, the 1980s were a time of crime in the area, and I left the area at the end of the 1980s. Despite the troubles back then in the 1980s, the neighborhood offered everything I needed, with convenient subway stations at 63rd Drive and Woodhaven Boulevard, and shopping and other needs convenenient. Seeing this video brings back memories. Thank you, actionkid, for your walks!!

At 48:24 where the Flower Boutique store is, there used to be a place called Game Shock. It was open in the 90's and closed in 96. Great place to buy video games and there were arcades in the back. Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat. I used to go there everyday after school. Good times! Thanks for the video.

That's because the right around the corner is the West side tennis club home to what use to be the US Open tennis tournament (now held in flushing meadows) Since the tournament has left Westside tennis club they turned the stadium into an outdoor concert venue and has hosted some big bands and singers now.

I grew up near 63rd drive and went to P.S. 139 in the 1960s-70s. There's nothing left from my childhood except the school -- even the Shalimar Diner (which was built on the site of the old library and some shops that burned to the ground in 1972) closed later in the year this video was shot.

Once again, I can't thank you enough for making another great documentary. Just too bad the wind was so audible. Nevertheless, you returned me to my earlier home of 27 years (1960-1987) and, after regrettng moving to Florida since, I almost appreciate it now despite the growth. I would NEVER return to Rego Park for all the money in the world because it's jammed with a random hodgepodge of unattractive businesses. Oh for the uncomplicated days of Alexander's and 63rd Drive, where Tony's fish store, McCrory's, Woolworth and Ben's Best mixed in with a few shoe stores, etc., and you could always amble further south to the library just below the LIRR trestle. I moved to Rego Park Gardens as it was being built and Lefrak City had its very first pilings being driven into the ground. Park City and its Estates were just completed, and when one passed below the LIE at Junction Blvd. it almost always smelled from skunk cabbage (as it was reclaimed land) or raw sewage just below. (Looks like no one repaired the crumbling structure since I left too; pretty scary.) The art shows in spring lining the parking lot fences on both sides of Junction leading up to Alexander's were a lighthearted hello to spring. Decades later, in my Florida workplace, I met the family of the artist who subsequently gave me lessons back then. It's a small world. To me, now, this area of Queens got a lot smaller as mega growth closed it all in. (I spent my last 20 years here on 94th Street and 56th Ave., two blocks from where I started at The Moderne on what was then 58th Ave.) On the flip side, the 75th Street subway station hasn't changed one iota; probably the same grime from the 1970s. And clothing styles remain the same. I'll gratefully keep my slides, shorts and tees on year-round as I head for Wawa here and appreciate my leaving Queens just in the nick of time. However, I will always hear my mom's velvety voice over the PA system at the Queens Center, now doubled in size and nicely upscaled. You win some, you lose more. Such is life. Just ask that poor woman struggling up the subway steps.

I hate to see that guy walking past the lady with a cane that is struggling on the steps. He did not offer to help her. That's why I won't ride the subway when I visit NYC next spring. I csn't walk on steps quickly and will get run over and pushed aside.
