Being possessed, it turns out, is exhausting work. Just ask Mambo Edeline St. Armand. While popular culture portrays Vodou as full of curses and sticking pins into little dolls, the religion has in fact played a central role in Haitian cultural identity since the country's birth, a result of the New World's first and only successful slave rebellion. Since Brooklyn is home to the largest Haitian population outside of Haiti, we sent Thomas Morton into our own backyard to witness the realities of being possessed by Vodou's multitude of rowdy, rum-thirsty spirits.

Milani Michell I read a book on vudu by someone named Alvardo, that vudu is originally from many countries around Africa. The black folks taken for slaves were taken from the country Yoruba, after they landed in the states, yoruban vudu was introduced to America. I visited Mexico a few years ago; i got some supplies from a botánica, did some magic when i was there. WOW - THAT KICKED BUTT!!!!!! Not sure why Vice would put out a video like this. I find it offensive that this "reporter" would overlay his snarky comments about corny twerking, etc when these people were open enough to let him come into view their rituals. Tying their religion to a promo for a horror movie is also offensive. Voodoo is a very old religion, did not originate from Haiti and is not a joke. Vice should be ashamed for putting this garbage out.

Having been to Haiti, invited to a Vodou pilgrimage in the caves of the Central Plateau, this video is insulting to Vodou. I agree with Nicky R that Haitian Vodou was brought from West Africa (esp. Benin), combined with Taino spirituality and Roman Catholicism. It honors Nature and the ancestors. I was honored to have been embraced by several Mambos who understood my own respect for the ancestors; my Viking/Celt heritage honoring Nature and ancestors, too, is not so dissimilar. There is a way to report with respect, and VIce: you did a poor job. You made this into an "exotic" farce for a white audience, and that is reprehensible.

Honestly I’d love to be part of Vice and shine light more into history and people instead of just trying to get good shots. What you say is not all wrong, but here is the truth, in Africa our ancestors pray to different spirits, but it was not defined or clear. I got cursed with Santeria Voodoo this past year, as I hit 40 (still very dependent on family for support, was really just my mom that didn't have it in her to throw me out to the streets). But I stopped trying to live up to her expectations of me, even threatened self defense against her as she paid off people to harass and make me miserable in the apartment she was letting me live in. Apparently, that's what she was waiting for, so they could have me bakeracted, scrambling my brain and taking my gun rights away. Apparently, i had given them permission to read my thoughts (DON'T EVER GIVE ANYBODY ANY RIGHTS OVER YOU, CAUSE THEY CAN DO STUFF TO YOU WITHOUT YOUR EVEN KNOWING), which they then hired a shaman to write down. In fact, the book gathering could be found in the astral realm (was found by almost two dozen psychics I had been to in the past 20+ years, only two of them were the type you go pay for a reading, the rest were close friends), but one needed to know the password to gain access. I'm not sure if it's still there, the book, the gathering. They say it isn't and that any which go looking for it will just end up harmed, but they might be lying. They threatened to kill all my old friends they didn't approve of (scared my exgf away by making her hear voices for a few minutes) and isolated me into another home where I'm surrounded by people interested in serving their agenda. None of my old friends they threatened will speak to me. They even threatened to kill me with bloodclot if i keep rejecting them. Even my dead grandpa is involved, as he started the curse when I was 6. They tried to get me to join, train me to be a part of their cult, but I couldn't get past the first part, denouncing God. Yes, they act as if they're good people, influential in the community, but I don't know, sacrificing chickens and having people denounce God to collects souls doesn't sound at all good to me. They keep trying to get me to denounce God, in all sorts of ways. They even managed to get the TV to start talking to me, without swaying from it's existence (what was already recorded), i mean that, as I struggled with my thoughts of what I should do, flipping the channel, whatever was on TV told me exactly what was up. I could go on for hours about this crap, even had an old friend killed by Haitian Voodoo witches, which I guess he had sort of raped, or something. I don't know about all this ancestral worship stuff, as much as I loved my grandpa, he was abusive, not an entity I would like to pray to and depend on, then again, my mom, dad, and grandma are no better, probably worse. And what of these other alien, other dimensional entities which could be affecting/influencing us? I pray to God, but it's like, I made my bed, so I've got to sleep in it, must make MY way to Him if I truly expect any help from Him to come thru (you know, not many can speak with Him directly, there's always someone in between), so I repent, trying to stop smoking pot, and other unhealthy vices. Focusing on my health which is falling apart. At least they're still willing to help me keep my teeth. It's a love/hate kinda thing, I guess. Remember what I said in ALL CAPS above, but shit, I've been warned over two dozen times about what I should remember, and I've failed every test they've thrown at me. I basically wake up every day now, not really wanting to live. It appears as if I can never really have any friends or sexual partners, unless it fits their agenda. I feel they're trying to rape me, having sent a couple women in my direction, God knowing, who really is inside that woman. It's freaking sick. All sorts of memories of past sexual abuse started to come to surface.
