Joshua Jones you can sand down the gum part (stickiest part) of the shoe and not the cloth part so the cloth part is still fresh. I wouldn’t call it ruining the shoe since the cloth part gets ruined faster than the gum when shoes are new.

I'll sk8 consistently in any shoe/grip, as long as my trucks are tight. Same technique for flip tricks my feet is mostly off the board. Started skating around the same age. Will never forget Nyjah and when he used to come into work and could barely see over the counter at West 49 lol
One guy in a group project kept a tally of our leader who said like. Eventually he started calling out the numbers out loud. My English teacher did it so much I kept track and once she said like ~90 times in an hour class
Actually an interesting conversation… Because when you look at someone like Daewon, he literally removes the top bushing from his front truck... that thing is just wobbly, and he can do anything… Me when I was at my peak in the late 90s, I had a pretty tight back truck and then a slightly looser front truck, but never super loose. But I was more tech not really a transition skater… I had mad pop, but it’s amazing how everyone just has their own thing and they own it! So many people can do the same tricks perfectly with a completely different set-up.
