"Self-Reliance" is an 1841 essay written by American transcendentalist philosopher and essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson. It contains the most thorough statement of one of Emerson's recurrent themes: the need for each individual to avoid conformity and false consistency, and follow his own instincts and ideas. This channel will approach self reliance from a modern perspective. and will focus on various build projects using modern amenities, and tools to build a completely self reliant lifestyle.
Many people ask me where I am from and where I film my projects. I am from Northern Ontario, Canada, and live in an area where off-grinding is easy because I have lots of land to build on and experiment with different buildings and materials. Everything I do is to try to be more self reliant, and to depend less on others. But that doesn't mean I don't like working together with other people on projects. Knowing people who have skills is part of being self reliant, and trading skills is a great way to get more things done!
I am so glad you’re back Kevin. Really missed your videos all the creative ideas you come up with and seeing your Daughter , Wife, Brother and Don. It doesn’t matter how long they are. I enjoy watching every minute of them. Hope all is OK and your family take care.
I missed him, too. I've been like the mom on the old movie, Home Alone. "Where's Kevin!!!"
I miss your videos I'm hoping you and your family are doing well hope to see more of your new builds I don't care if they are small or large. I hope we all can watch them all one thing to add just be safe love to you and your family
SOOOOOOOOO happy you are back. You're the best. So entertaining and informative.
Great to see you back Kevin! Enjoy your video's ! Thanks for sharing.
That "little toad stool" is a MAGNIFICANT example of a Turkey tail mushroom.
In Dutch we call them "Elfenbankje" which would translate to Seat for Elves
I thought it looked like Turkey tail too. Turkey tail is Medicinal and worth money.
@@candacemiller-wh5rm Guess that's why Kevin's wife wanted them.
BTW, it is the same thing, I googled if "elfenbankje" is medicinal, and google said yes 😄
Glad to see ya back buddy, we dont miss a video
I appreciate that
Hell yeah new upload!! I've been so psyched to see your latest videos getting the views they deserve. The amount of work you put into these projects and videos deserve way more attention.
Share share share.
Ok, Crazy IDEA that only you would try. Build an holder for the winch to fit the front forks, then you can have the back hitch attached to an anchor point as it is tied the the frame and the frame is all steel so it shouldn't break....
That would likely damage the loader frame. Those loaders are only made to lift about 400-600lb depending on the tractor.
Look in to skidding equipment they have a plate that goes in to the ground in front of the winch like a anchor
Anchoring the winch to another tree and not the tractor. That would work great for pulling them upon the landing. Then you can move them around with the tractor.
13:58 Hello Don!
That was fun and interesting. Thx for doing this, filming it and sharing it with us.
Kevin is BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I didn't really go anywhere. ;-)
We love you and Missed you and Don
Blessings on your house and home
Omg Kevin that thing is a beast.i was so happy to see you had a video out this morning miss you on Saturdays and it was really nice to see Don out in the field with you. So excited to see you both big hugs to you both. From Morris, Illinois
Looking forward to more content Kevin
A tree saver strap, a couple of block and tackles, and good . The speed feed out/in (spool speed) on that winch is perfect
Good video Kevin! That's some winch! The brackets you made for it really worked well. The Wench definitely does a good job! The stump that wouldn't come out, that thing was really rooted it will be a pain getting it out but definitely a good try! Was good to see Don out their with you, hope he's doing well. Looking forward to your next one! By the way good job on the fishing challenge!
Thanks 👍
I really enjoy the video's. Ty for posting.
My family used to do Heavy Horse logging here in England. Exact same process you’re doing with the small tractor and long winch to avoid destroying the forest, but using big horses instead of the machinery. Minimal destruction, no noise, no welding. Perhaps that’d be an exciting new development for your homestead? 😊
Neiiiiiigh
That is the one big upside to the oversized winch is that the tractor can't really get stuck anymore if there's an anchor nearby... but I'm pretty sure a 3 ton winch would do the same thing. 😃
Now that's some serious Testing!
Build a heavy duty offroad trailer to mount the wench on and then tow the trailer with the tractor to your destination and then anchor the trailer. The failure points would only be the anchor point, the wench and wench mount if tied together correctly. You could tow the trailer with a car or ATV as well and you could still use the vehicle as an anchor point but it would be better to use a fixed point.
Fun and useful new toy
Your metal fab skills have developed nicely
I would fabricate a ground anchor spike that could be raised and lowered by three point hitch
That sounds like a whole new level of destruction.. lol I bend the snot out of the three point assembly moving dirt in the 2t dumper.. maybe on the front load bucket.
@@ModernSelfReliance Ide go with a rear anchor like Rob mentioned.. Could be designed so the stress stays off the tractor itself..
I sure wouldn't want to twist up my loader..👍👍
Man with impaired heart moves massive log with just one hand! GO DON! This has been a fine lesson in practical forestry and the equipment that aids the work.
Good to see you back Kevin.that winch would pull my jeep out of any situation, awesome dude.😊☮️
I can't believe Don wasn't starting a fire with all of the scraps! That wench is a handy bit o' machinery.
Missed you. But your back with a snap!!
Good to see you (and Done) again Kevin!
Awesome stuff, would love to see you install the winch on some bigger vehicle, and yank some more stumps out of the ground!
This episode should have been titled "Kevin attaches an adult winch to his toy tractor" 🤣 I'm not poking fun of the tractor. I know how amazingly capable they are even for their small size. This episode just showed it's limitations very quickly with that winch and the jobs you tackled.
Hopefully big tractor is listening...
Good to see you back Kevin. Been awhile
Good to see you back Kevin! This one of my fav channels! Thanks
Great video Kev! Always something interesting!
I'm closer to Canada and you make every video a joy to watch
I'm impressed with that winch , I've got a Warn winch on my Ram
Glad your back. I was starting to worry you retired from yt like so many others.. 🤙✌️
Happy to see you back. Full Stop!!
My Sunday afternoon was complete today with Kevin & coffee. You were missed, my friend.
Nice to see you both back!
What's up Kevin? Watching from New Mexico, USA, of all places lol. Been watching for awhile now, enjoy your videos, never commented before, but.... Ive got an idea for the tractor/winch situation. What if you designed something of substantial weight that has some kind of ground anchor/drag, that you could use with the forks on the front of your tractor. It would give you some added weight and ground contact, enough to help you winch heavier objects without the risk of pulling the tractor apart. Just a thought. Have a good one man! Thanks for the cool videos!
Welding caps, you can get custom designs. They give that cushion you're looking for and protect scalp from sparks. Good stuff
I'll look into it...
Seeing your self-propelled winch made me think you could build an elevator somewhere in the trees or spider hole. Love the videos.
I would love to arbor and lumber with you in your woods.
Looks like so much fun and fulfilling. Lucky Don.
Our high altitude desert property in Southern Utah, only grows Juniper trees
They never blow down
Full stop 🛑 awesome job great show and great to see you and Don at it again. Have a great day guys. Kevin you and your daughter killed the fishing tournament. Awesome job.
Canadians - "So I used a hockey puck" :)
Man, I miss living on the border...
Thats a pretty good example of tried and true! I mounted my 12K pound winch on a similar plate. I have receivers on the back, and front of the trucks, and on the front of my flatbed trailer for hauling. They definitely have more than one purpose in life. I wouldnt worry about pulling that Kubota apart, with the right weld job, I'd anchor it to the Empire State Building...lol 😂😅 Love what you're doing 😊
Just a tip on saving some battery life. You can free spool the winch to unwind it. Should be a knob on the winch motor to do it with!
What I’ve done with my welding hood is cut the strap off leaving the top one on and attached a piece of surgical tubing. Gives enough stretch and strength to keep it where you want it.
Good seeing you, sir.
That's an amazing wench! Very cool.
@dieselcreek has some great advice on removing stumps!
Good to sèé Don lòóking well and yourself Kevin. 🙂 If you had one of them spider tractors with legs for all terrain that would be a walk in the park around the property, maybe some hydraulic or hand cranked angled rear outriggers to dig the winch assembly in place to stand it’s ground also adding extra ballast weight on the front forks if not already done so.
I'm glad🎉 You and Ron are back.
It looks like that tree🌳stump is hooked to something 🤔 or the roots are not rotted enough.
I know a genius when I see one. You sir, are certainly a genius! Great content and thank you for your videos!
What you really need is a three pint linkage on the back of the tractor and the winch mounted on that with a wedge that you can lower. Plus it puts pressure on more points of the tractor. And will help eliminate the tractor as much and allow some height control on the winch as well.
Need to be careful not to overheat it by continuous usage. Check out the electrical duty cycle.
You need a bulldozer my friend lol
Do you have a spare Dozer?
Excellent job!! Excellent video! Thank you Kevin for your hard work! Cheers mate!
That wrench you were using (the one with the pointed end) is what I was told is called a spud wrench. When you were assembling the root cellar or the sauna , you used a similar pointed tool that you and Don dubbed a hole alignment punch. I was going to write in (at that time) that I was told that was called a spud. So I finally got around to telling you that. Keep up the good work Kevin. You are my favorite TH-camr and what my TH-cam defaults to when any other video ends.
Awesome. Thanks for watching!
Ha! You really pulled me in with that one, I was hooked from the start. When Don left, I thought; winch way did he go?
Cheers.
Great to see more Kevin adventure.
Pretty interesting project, you may consider using a multiple pulley 3 to1 or 4 to2 system to increase the force.
Would love to see you make charcoal out of some of that stuff. Would be cool to see how you would do it in bulk
Thanks for the video Kevin!
You have to remember that you have a 17,000 pound winch on a 3,000 pound tractor.
3,000lbs with the bucket loaded full of gravel maybe. That's a lawnmower that ate it's wheaties.
Maybe you said, If you could tie the front of the tractor to a fixed object (rock, stump). Then winch in the logs.
I have a lot of the magnetic tool holders, good for magnetically holding of tarp to cover firewood in a metal wagon from Harbor Freight. A really good tarp holder.
Awesome as always
With the helmet could try sticking a soft foam to it lol
So I try to wear hats without seams because that is where it typically hurts. My welding shield tip.
Hi Kevin missed your videos hope you and family are well and hope Don is well, with all the trees that are coming down and out do you have a plan to plant trees?
I plant trees all the time.
My first thought was, you need another wench on the front of your tractor.
❤ The video
Not a bad idea.
You can build a frame Hook the cable on the top From the tractor In hooker chain from the middle of the A. frame To the tree Stup It might give you special leverage
Cool video, but I think your tractor isn’t heavy enough 😂
we've been a'waitin!! haha
Maybe make your winch portable with wheels so you can roll it over to a stronger tree that you can strap or log chain it to and maybe it can pull the trees up to where you can work with them better. Ohh and glad to see you back.
Can you anchor the winch somehow to another tree to get the log down the slope then set up logs under it to let it roll like I think you have done for heavy things in the past?
add some leverage under your logs and roll might help smaller logs shaped like a spool with a v notch and see if it helps
I weld 10 to 12 hours a day i use a esab a50 sental good hood
A day? That's badass!
@@shawnbottom4769 lol ment week
maybe consider two chains or straps hooked on either side of the winch and hooked to trees in front of tractor / by hooking winch directly to two trees the tractor is taken out of the equation / curious as to that set up and the winches power would pull that stump
Not sure what you paid but they’re about 800 bucks here at Home Depot and of course they go higher
Awesome video Kevin! Hi Don!
You need to build some feet that attach to the back of your tractor and brace it from sliding backwards.
like two Haul Master Lifting Slings 6400 lb capacity at Harbor Freight
At least you have the capability to get your tractor unstuck whenever you are using it hahaha
the welding helmet question yes but you will need to either buy a better hood or see if you can use a better hoods head mount like a miller or a speedgas hood
we love your content / maybe consider posting midweek when us TH-cam watchers are starving for content / just a suggestion
Time for a bigger tractor Kevin lol but the winch is awesome
Maybe put some down support one you winch so it can dig into ground so tractor won’t move as much
Kevin's "MORE POWER!" tractor video coming soon...
Does Princess Auto sponsor your videos? I noticed besides the regular mention, that it became "my store" when they didn't have the bracket...
Happy you’re alive and d back.. whatever happened with the homeless dude?
@ 13:58 WOW a DON sighting !!!
For my welding helmet I wrapped the head band with electrical tape and cotton balls until it was plush. Stuck the cotton balls under the tape and layered it until it felt right on my head.
This is an excellent idea.
@ModernSelfReliance I did this durring collage cause I had the same problem you are having. Fixed the problem and I haven't changed it since. That was 4 years ago!
You sure have a lot of widowmakers standing around.
It’s been a while since I’ve seen your videos ! How is Dons medical issues? It is good seeing you guys! Maybe use pulleys too increase the amount you can pull
Hi Kevin, nice video.
I need to make a big A. frame Slap the cable over The A. framing pulled out Give me more upward torque
do you eat the "toadstool"? (10:41) - I'm from Ontario, but I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to mushrooms. I think I've heard them be called Turkey Tails before, but another comment refreshed my memory on that
and per your Tim the Toolman Taylor reference "more power!!! oh oh oh oh" (grunt noises)
I'll be Al, saying "I don't think that's such a good idea there Tim" :P
Get a drag chain, you'll destroy that strap.
Spoke too soon, you have one around the tree stump.
maybe some tails like an artillery piece has stop it moving more you pull more it grips
There is a A. frame You can make That 1 man can pull a big log out of the woods By By hand it just takes a lot of Ringing You can even invest in blocking
at what point did the fact that your tractor weighs 2500 pbs and you are trying to use a 17.5 k winch not click? thats to much for most full size tractors.
A backhoe would remove the stumps not 17,500 winch. Unless roots are rotten.
