More than 2,5 years ago I watched this great informative video and bought a 2014 Audi A4 2.0 TDI (177 ps), with multitronic and with 210.000km. As the timing belt needs to be replaced at 210.000 km, I directly did this and also changed the oil in the transmission. (About €800,- total iirc) Now, I'm 2,5 years further and it has 270.000 km. I replace the engine oil every 15.000 km and use Forte diesel treatment (€20 per bottle) once in a while. I had no issues so far with this car, it turns out to be very reliable! No engine issues, no multitronic issues (that's my biggest fear though, looking at the complexity) and no electronic issues! :) Thanks for making these videos, it really helps before buying a used car! By the way, it would be nice if you do a review for the Audi A4 B9 :)

At just over 50K miles, the turbo failed completely--a $4,000 repair. From an engineering standpoint, there's no excuse for this. The 2.0 turbo has been around forever. You'd think that, by now, Audi/VW would have this engine sorted out. The fact that you have to tell consumers about all the problems Audi owners face is unfortunate. BTW, your video is very thorough.
Thank you VERY much for this video. Currently looking at a 2014 A4 manual with 110k miles (post facelift and 2014 refresh). It's in very good shape, no rust anywhere. The young age and high miles means it was mainly a highway driver, no concern for stop-n-go wear. Very comfortable car and easy stick (not super sporty like a GTI, which is my main ride). Spasiba!

I wanted to buy an A5 with Multitronic transmission, and being a camper with a 750kg trailer, I was concerned about the CVT, and a Audi Technician confirmed my concerns. CVT is not recommended for towing. So, I guess I'm going to have to get me an A4, hopefully an Avant. Love the styling of the stationwagon :-). I currently have the B6 A4 petrol, with almost 285,000 on the clock, and is still a smooth ride. I have a few interested people who wants to buy it, as it is very well looked after. My Son in law just bought a 2013 2.0 diesel S Line Black Edition automatic yesterday. Nice car but sport seats are hard also suspension is very hard due to it being lower than standard A4.
I’ve had many problems with this car now fixed. 1. Oil consumption (replaced piston, piston rings, and software update) $ few grand considering Audi gave me a partial warranty after weeks of pestering them. 2. Lights going out (easy diy) 3. Hpfp (easy diy) 4. O2 sensor cost few grand forgot exactly how much 5. Camshaft position sensor cost few hundred Regardless what the video entails is pretty accurate. I drive Audi A4 b8 2009 Quattro. Drives nice but I still worry in future what problems will arise. Possibly have to replacement control arms a grand if diy.
We had a pre Facelift model of this A4. We made 330.000 kilometers on this Car without major issues. But like menshioned the Doorlocks tend to fail. At the end of our ownership 3 of the 4 doors (including the Drivers door) where brocken.
I have a Audi A4 1.8 TFSI 2008 sedan - purchased it off the shelf and run 125kms she is good as new and some times the turbo shutter when I push the peddle at low rpm. But over all a amazing car.
@@1010thechamp thank you, but my budget simply won't allow that to happen, B8 is one of my options for my first car, why 1.8 would be worse? Best regards
@S115PL The 1.8T petrol is of an older design and also more highly sprung than the 2.0, you say budget I say false economy, a lower powered 2.0TFSI doesn't drink as much oil and also more performance, smoother and even more economical, however yes the 1.8 because less desired won't cost as much, so you have to weigh it up.
@@1010thechamp that's a good advice, 2.0 would aeem to be more longlasting choice, and most definetly better platform for modyfing, once again, thank you sir, and may God be with you
I have an A4 2.0 TDI Estate S Line Special edition, and using the more expensive diesel fuel and quality oil makes a huge difference to performance and reliability.
Bought my Audi 1.8T 2008 model with 184k on clock, in awesome condition, only problems are the doors stopped working, started with 1 then 3 now are intermitent, replaces front 2 motors as they seem to be the problem..uses a little oil from time to time, but thats it..smooth
Nice, exactly what I needed :) I own a B8 since about two years, it's the 3.0 TDI 245HP Quattro S-Line version, but it's a high mileage car. I now have about 250.000 km on it, it still drives perfectly smooth, but since you mentioned it, I do need to take a look at the timing chain, it's never been replaced and probably worn out... Allthough I don't hear any concerning noice. But otherwise, I never had any problems with the car except for wear parts like brakes etc. and for one thing - Recently, the tensioner for the belt, which drives the alternator, the power steering pump and the AC compressor (so NOT the timing belt tensioner), has just fell off while the car stood there. Well, easy fix, not expensive, but the car had to be towed to my local mechanic.
Same here, i have exactly the same tipe of audi like you with 240.000 km..it's a very good car. I've changed only brakes and discs a stuff like that.. I Wish you many km ahead
Don't be silly, 250 000 km is not high mileage, it's quite average for these cars. The diesel engines especially should be good for 400k+ if you change oil regularly (every 8000-10000 k, and not one kilometer more!), use only high quality oil, and don't ignore any obvious problems.
Great video as always and the new improvements to video editing as superb. Could you please consider making videos on Skodas, Volvos and other popular cars in EU?
Oil consumtion is big problem. If you dont want to buy 4 liter oil every 3-4 months avoid the models to 2011. I fill up my Audi a5 2011 model every month with 1 liter. I dont have waranty for it so fixing the issue is gonna cost a lot
@@NMEofdaST8 nope. When I took it to audi they said if you have insurance on the car call them. Bcs it's gonna cost 6600 euros to fix. Engine has to be removed and all
I bought the early 2012 model a few months back. Still had the oil consumption problem. Now it’s getting worst as it only took almost 2 weeks to consume the oils after maintenance. I’m hoping overhaul will fix this.
Ive got a B8 2.0TDi with 143 HP (2009) and is reliable AS hell / 40.000km in one year without any big issues except blower (climate) passed Out needed to be replaced (200€)
i have a 2009 multitronic, the gearbox has done 400000 kms, with regular oil change. just the computer box for the gearbox packed up once. i have changed pistons at 150k and the chain at 386kms
I have a 2009 A4 2.0 TDI manual with 120hp...and basically everything you said that could brake did happen with my car such as parking brake, door lock, steering wheel vibration, clutch replacement etc... This car is realy problematic for that certain production year. Would not recommend at all.
Definitely replace the PCV for high oil consumption. The PCV also went through an iteration of improvement. Shocks can fail only 150km. The turbo linkage can fail somewhere around 200km and the turbo will need to be fully replaced. Shocks can fail at on Audi fixed so many issues across their entire line in 2016 so highly recommend 2016+ vehicles. Brakes and MT/clutch are incredibly resilient if you know how to drive. 267km on my 2011 A4 MT.
My 2006 A4 Avant just turned 530k kms. I attribute the lack of mechanical issues to synthetic oil use since new. Despite a failed steering rack ($$$), It continues to be my daily driver as everything else remains serviceable. Intention is to replace with an A6 TDI within 12 months...
Brilliant Was going to buy the early 1.8 b8 estate Wings both rotting away Light missing to rear shocks And the passenger door would not open from the outside 😒 Cam belt rattling Well all your info above was great Thank you I've given it a miss N gone for a 13 plate
As a 5-year owner of a premium plus a4 b8 from 2011 here's the best advice I can give you: Don't. Engines (Pistons & Rings) are flawed by design and yours WILL fail. Audi will not stand by their product and now I have a very expensive paperweight.
Outstanding video. However, the timing chain/tensioner issue still persists into the early 2013 B8.5 models. I believe this may have been fixed after June of 2013, but it definitely still exists in pre-July models. Ask me how I know 🙄
if u are buyin a b8 a4 it will burn oil! either have 2-3k set aside for piston ring rebuild or always have a 5 qt jug in the trunk other than that these are excellent cars, super fun to tune and build and handle way better than the competitors
Great review, my 2012 2.0t a4 has been amazing. Bought it at 66k miles and now it’s at 113k and I’ve only had to replace the front control arms. The headliner is sagging in the back since it’s from Florida, the heat kills the headliners. Overall I’m happy, but one annoying thing is that the car rolls forward or backwards if I’m on a hill when I put it into drive or reverse. Like it just creeps a foot in either direction and I have to give it so much gas in order not to smash peoples bumpers when I’m parallel parking on a hill for example.. My gf test drove a newer 2016 A4 yesterday and it rolled back at a stop sign because we were on a hill. So it seems to be s problem with most of them. Or maybe it’s only the FWD versions 🤔 Anyone else with me on all this?
Yeah, I noticed that, when I back into my driveway, I put it in reverse and have to give it pretty good gas right away so as to not roll forward on a small incline.
Really good. I’ve just brought 2 litre TDI 2012 with 86,000 on clock. No signs of dual mass flywheel wear yet but maybe that will change hopefully not though
Got serious problem with my A4s Threshold, need to replace them completely. A few months ago i replaced my frontal doorlocks on both sides, my fuel cap lock and my windshield wiper sticks.... Need to order stone guars from somewhere.... 🤔
I have an Audi a5 SB...year 2015...A5 & A4 share same platform...so far no issue at all....depends on ur luck how good or bad car u get...but, before buying used Audi, ask mechanic for ur companion to inspect the car & get 3rd party Waranty for ur car peace of mind driving
Well I did pretty good getting a 2012 that already had the timing chain with updated tensioner installed a few months before I bought the car. The front upper control arm bushings do tend to fail at around 120,000 miles and I had some peeling on the electronic parking brake switch.
@@Daivy07 well i decided not to get it. I kept finding issues with the car. Infact, if you buy it you have to be prepared for some repairs/parts replacement. Which may be costly
Sometimes Audi A4 2.0 TDI B8 2010 have a problem with second thermostat, which is located behind the motor. Original parts to resolve the problems with temperature below 90 degrees are 1K0121113A and 1J0122351.
@@markozivkovic1392 I would say it is true as i have already changed the EGR 1 time - 300 euro for new one. About high pressure pump and injector i dont have problems from now. My car is 340 000km.
I had a 2010 a4 avant. Worst car I've ever had. Oil Consumption was astronomical. Timing belt went, ripping apart the cylinder head. This is a common issue and is actually under a class action lawsuit. After re-building the engine, the 2nd cylinder went (just stopped firing). $25,000 down the drain. This is also a common issue. I believe the cars with this issue are 2009 - 2012 . What I know for sure is that these issues are very common and it is incredibly risky to purchase this vehicle as you could have a complete lemon on your hands. Godspeed
All of the A4 2009 2.0l Diesel have a flywheel issue , it start vibrating at low RPM and get worst with time . My car stat vibrating at 120.000 km till 220.000km i sold the car now. All of the A4 2009 2.0 Diesel have the issue with clutch bearing that wear out at 50.000 km and earlier, the clutch pedal become very hard to press. My car the bearing failed at 100.000 did not change it and got used to it but my back pain get worst 😅. Today i drive a Mercedes automatic gear box. If you ever want to buy the Audi A4 B8, do your checking before you buy and get some cache a side for a complete clutch replacement 2.400 euro at VW dealer. The new clutch and fly-wheel are from the new generation and should not have that issue anymore. Drive your car gentle and all will be fine.
Before you buy!!! Please research the 09-14 2.0T motors and their oil consumption issues. Purchased many that had the piston rings failing which caused massive oil consumption, no exhaust smoke either. 3.2 Audi motor is amazing though
You had a bad experience with this car? I'm about to purchase a used A4 Avant Quatro 2.0 that has travelled around 55,000km and this is the issue I am worried the most.
Just to share my 2010 A4 B8 2.0TDi - gear box fuel pressure pipe clip broke causing a rattle all the time. Also the passenger side engine mount broke, passenger front side bearing broke & guide link worn out after 180000km.
audi a5 1.8tfsi apr stage 1 245 bhp, still very reliable, should have come like that from factory, the manual transmission makes lightwork of the extra torque ... thinking to soon upgrade to the b9 ?
Audi A4 is good model with very good driving experience and performance but unfortunately it comes at the cost of reliability and high maintenance. I have a 1.8T model with 150000 miles but it has required constant pricey maintenance till date. My mates having Q3 and 2.0T models have similar experiences.

Nice job. I have owned a B8 for 9 years. All of the issues you referred to, I have experienced. Still love my Avant. 👍🏁
What year is yours? Diesel or benzin
Oh crap
My Son in law just bought a 2013 2.0 diesel S Line Black Edition automatic yesterday. Nice car but sport seats are hard also suspension is very hard due to it being lower than standard A4.
I’ve had many problems with this car now fixed. 1. Oil consumption (replaced piston, piston rings, and software update) $ few grand considering Audi gave me a partial warranty after weeks of pestering them.
2. Lights going out (easy diy)
3. Hpfp (easy diy)
4. O2 sensor cost few grand forgot exactly how much
5. Camshaft position sensor cost few hundred
Regardless what the video entails is pretty accurate.
I drive Audi A4 b8 2009 Quattro. Drives nice but I still worry in future what problems will arise. Possibly have to replacement control arms a grand if diy.
GOAT Life how many miles?
Where can I get piston and rings to buy for the A4 2011 model
We had a pre Facelift model of this A4. We made 330.000 kilometers on this Car without major issues. But like menshioned the Doorlocks tend to fail. At the end of our ownership 3 of the 4 doors (including the Drivers door) where brocken.

I bought this car yesterday with 2.7tdi. Smooth car.
I have a Audi A4 1.8 TFSI 2008 sedan - purchased it off the shelf and run 125kms she is good as new and some times the turbo shutter when I push the peddle at low rpm. But over all a amazing car.
How is it now sir ? I am looking to buy this exact car
@@S115PLHe might not be here to answer you, but I will, if you had a choice don't go for the 1.8Tfsi, go for one of the 2.0 engines.

Great research work, well presented. Thank you and keep up the good job. Subscribed.
2010 A4 1.8T Sline - had to replace pistons at 100k km's but still drives and looks like she is fresh out of the factory!
I have an A4 2.0 TDI Estate S Line Special edition, and using the more expensive diesel fuel and quality oil makes a huge difference to performance and reliability.
it is said that they often have problems with the EGR valve, high pressure pump, injector, is this true?
Count dracula always a pleasure to hear your voice
And the infor you have is amazing❤
Very thorough and informative advice, Thank you !
Isn't there a recall for it? Or not for the 2011?
@@NMEofdaST8 I know that in Brazil there's the possibility to bring the car to the dealer repairing it, even out of the warranty.
@@NMEofdaST8 nope. When I took it to audi they said if you have insurance on the car call them. Bcs it's gonna cost 6600 euros to fix. Engine has to be removed and all
All you need are new piston and rings .. is a good car
I bought the early 2012 model a few months back. Still had the oil consumption problem. Now it’s getting worst as it only took almost 2 weeks to consume the oils after maintenance. I’m hoping overhaul will fix this.

I have a 2009 A4 2.0 TDI manual with 120hp...and basically everything you said that could brake did happen with my car such as parking brake, door lock, steering wheel vibration, clutch replacement etc... This car is realy problematic for that certain production year. Would not recommend at all.
hey man, how did you fix the door locking issue my 2009 A4 b8 has the same isse , its stubborn locks and unlocks when it wants to?
Best info on car business 👌 nr 1 great job. Thank you 😊
Definitely replace the PCV for high oil consumption.
Is it manual?

As a 5-year owner of a premium plus a4 b8 from 2011 here's the best advice I can give you: Don't. Engines (Pistons & Rings) are flawed by design and yours WILL fail. Audi will not stand by their product and now I have a very expensive paperweight.
You have to tell us what engine you have. I only know that the 1.8TFSI and 2.0TFSI have problems with the piston rings.
@@MotoMario1 depends what engine code
Outstanding video. However, the timing chain/tensioner issue still persists into the early 2013 B8.5 models. I believe this may have been fixed after June of 2013, but it definitely still exists in pre-July models. Ask me how I know 🙄
I'm looking at a 2013 allroad. Thanks, I'll be checking that date stamp now

if u are buyin a b8 a4 it will burn oil! either have 2-3k set aside for piston ring rebuild or always have a 5 qt jug in the trunk other than that these are excellent cars, super fun to tune and build and handle way better than the competitors

Great job man. Very helpful.
Or maybe it’s only the FWD versions 🤔
Anyone else with me on all this?
Yeah, I noticed that, when I back into my driveway, I put it in reverse and have to give it pretty good gas right away so as to not roll forward on a small incline.
If you had the car with gears you wouldnt have that problem
🤨 doesn’t it always do that?
Great video like always.👍
And if you can make a video of lexus GS made from 2012 please, Thanks.
Really good. I’ve just brought 2 litre TDI 2012 with 86,000 on clock. No signs of dual mass flywheel wear yet but maybe that will change hopefully not though

Thank you for all your information
I had a 2010 a4 avant. Worst car I've ever had. Oil Consumption was astronomical. Timing belt went, ripping apart the cylinder head. This is a common issue and is actually under a class action lawsuit. After re-building the engine, the 2nd cylinder went (just stopped firing). $25,000 down the drain. This is also a common issue. I believe the cars with this issue are 2009 - 2012 . What I know for sure is that these issues are very common and it is incredibly risky to purchase this vehicle as you could have a complete lemon on your hands. Godspeed
Best car in this class concerning reliability is the w204
No lol😂😂
what about heavy steering on pre faclift cars? non working speed holder and a 6speed manual thats notchy and hard on gearchanges
