Shang Tsung is an awesome villain. He isn't evil to the point where you absolutely hate his guts. He's so evil to the point where it makes you smile and you end up rooting for him.
Cary Togawa MADE Shang Tsung cool in MK11, He was the best and only choice for Shang Tsung as he makes him seem like a genuine threat every time and his delivery of every line has an essence of cunning deception and untrustworthy faith, but that’s what makes him SO GOOD in the role to me. You can never truly anticipate his next move or action and if I am to be honest, I only thought Shang was only okay in the NRS Games and therefore didn’t care much for him in this timeline (Midway games make him a badass like Deadly Alliance) but Cary’s performance made me like him more than Shao Khan
Exactly! I feel cary tagawa's performance is what saved them. Honestly he made that game. Unfortunately they can't pull the same thing twice. And i doubt the new game will be good. They are trying too hard and are rushing it. The new game is sloppy and it shows. Mk11 wasn't horrible,not the best. But it still has replayability. Which is to say a lot from nrs's track record. Shang tsung has a eerie calm to him. He leaves you in a false sense of security. He could finish you,or he could not. Depending on the situation. Like shang tsung is an opportunist. When he's a villain,he's one bad ass mofo. When he's got a more....sympathetic or "gentle" side. He still carries himself like an emperor,tho he is not of royalty. I could go on about his character. But I'll leave it at that.
@@General_BooHaha, yeah. Respectfully, they kind of did. The game is killing it. People who lost interest in MK11 are returning to the franchise for MK1. It's a resounding success on both the casual and competitive side. Some noticable bugs here and there, but no more than what shows up in most AAA+ games on day 1. Buuut the Shang Tsung in the game, while still really cool and badass, definitely just left me missing the real Cary. Still tho. Don't be sad it's over, smile that it happened.
30:37 Shang Tsung is a master manipulator. but its a clear tell when he does that half smirk he's lying. right there. he dosnt look for anything, doesn't smirk, never diverts his attention. i feel like he genuinely had people devoted to him and that he respected them. and the way he says that line and acts. feel like its an honest thing he's saying for once. wich is meant to help think he'll turn out good. not because Shang is trying to do it. but because it helps the writers make the end a little less expected.
So satisfying to see Shang pull the rug out from under Sindel and Shao Kahn. After years of walking all over him like a doormat and belittling him, they reaped what they sowed. I know Shao is a classic and a fan favorite, but Shang Tsung will always be the #1 MK villain for me. Played all these nerds like chumps.
Nope. You're right. Shang tsung is self serving,and a survivalist. First. However,he isn't completely evil. He after all despite by proxy being psuedo immortal. Is still human. Quan chi never was (not counting mk12/mk1s horrible retocon) so he doesn't have that feeling. Shang tsung is selfishish not evil. He is surviving in a world that is brutal. So for certain characters to act the eay they do is odd. Tho hypocritical. However,the problem lays in the fact nobody actually calls it out and it have consequences for their irrationality and oocness for plot. But besides that,even thru the bad writing,shang tsung is antagonist not always a villain. Could he be? Sure,no prob. But having that all the time is not only boring it's kind of an insult to cary hiroyuki tagawa. And honestly a complex and meaningful shang tsung is better. Sorry for this long comment. I love complex villains and characters.

Too bad we'll never get this epic shang ever again. Because nrs only made shang tsung done actually well for cary. Making it nice n cushioned for him only to take it back in the new game. Which means,they only did this as a nostalgia bait and cash grab. Which is awful to an amazing actor and legend like Mr. Tagawa. 😔 it's a shame. A real shame. Despite my gripes with 11. They really should have ended it and left it alone. And after 11 just do spin offs or non "canon" stuff at least. Honestly ending the series would have been better. Then we wouldn't get another shitty reboot with goku god mary sue liu kang. (Still wont forgive them for trashing my boy and making him absolutely unlikeable)
My only issue with this story. Shang tsung's background and history and practically all that lore that was before. Erased for plot for this stupid mediocre villain kronika. Smh.
@@kaihedgie1747for now till NRS decides not to. They haven't been very good lately with story or consistency. Now gameplay and online kombat? Pretty decent. But that's all they got to offer at this point. Shang tsung is legit the ONLY good thing about 11. I guess for me this time shenanigans trope is getting old. Mostly because there is no true consequences and anything can be rewritten back and making the whole thing...a bit pointless. Look 11 has some great things,some things i was actually impressed with . And mk has potential to do better....but ive yet to see anything of substance. Again this is just my personal opinions.
@@kaihedgie1747still i would appreciate it if mk for once had a game that didn't rely on cash grabs,half baked stories and relying dlcs to make up for the lack of a full game. But more importantly treats their game devs a bit better. But thats besides the point. Still glad tagawa came back for the role. But i am not so sure without a good script(or decent pay) they will be able to pull this off again. Again. This is just me.
@@kristalewis5869 You've been playing a number of "incomplete" games long before the advent of DLC. MK3 was very much an unfinished game with an early instance of "planned obsolescence " as that game was advertised to arcade owners as already having a major update on the way before the game was even released, or stuff like Deception that had two re-releases with additional characters, forcing you to buy the game at full price everytime, and in those cases were console-exclusive. Wanted Shao Kahn and Goro? Tough luck, go get a Gamecube, 'cause they're not updating your PS2 disc to put 'em in there

Man, Cary Hiroyuki Tagawa is clearly giving it his all. 25 years later, and he's still bringing the fire. Easily the best performance in the game.
It was a legit full circle moment for NetherRealm Studios.
Them casting Cary Hiroyuki Tagawa was the best move. It made me like Shang Tsung a lot more.
A callback to his portrayal in the 95 movie. Cary is always fantastic.
