    Why do the shields go on the inside?

    • @XSProgression
      @XSProgression  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Douglas Thompson whats up Doug? Usually bearings have shields on both sides and that is to “keep the dirt from getting in” but sometimes it results in keeping the dirt stuck once it does get in lol. The company that makes these bearings designed them so the inside has a shield that really is just keeping the balls inside together and the theory behind it is that dirt will easily be able to come back out of them. Looks pretty sick shieldless too in my opinion and they’re definitely working nicely compared to ones I’ve had before

      @@XSProgression I know skateboarding is a whole different beast so I knew there would be logic behind what you were doing. I knew guys that skated and removed the grease/oil from new bearings to make them spin better. Im sure you wouldnt want to ride in wet weather like that but I think bearings are more of a consumable item with skateboards than they are for bikes. Am I correct?
      Those wheels are strange, are they aluminum core or something?

    • @XSProgression
      @XSProgression  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Douglas Thompson oh wow that’s interesting. I haven’t heard of removing the oil. I wonder if it made a difference. Yeah the rain is definitely not where you wanna be on a skateboard. Rust is a factor, but more of an issue is getting the board waterlogged! Bearings actually last a pretty long time if you keep them from being wet too much. I’d say around 1-3 years. Possibly longer if maintained and cleaned. We go through new decks faster than anything else on the skateboard. I’m not sure if that’s longer than with a bike.. I’m still so new to the bmx world and need to learn about a lot of that stuff! I actually am curious if there is a best bike maintenance and cleaning practice for my bike if you know of any. Thanks for checking this out being a BMX guy!!
      Yeah both the wheels and bearings are unique on this one too hahah. The “core” of the wheels I’m using is actually made out of plastic and the rest is urethane which is what wheels are normally fully made of. Reason for the plastic is to reduce weight but keeps strength. Ricta (the brand) has been doing it for a while and they’re becoming a popular choice

    • @DouglasThompson
      @DouglasThompson 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@XSProgression I think the idea was the oil/grease was causing drag. 1-3 years is much longer than I thought they lasted for skaters.
      I definitely see little chunks of decks more frequently than I see bearings.
      Its funny how there are so many worlds on the same planet.
      Im new on the bike too kinda, I just always love learning about tech and maintenance stuff.

    • @XSProgression

      Hey that should be the trucks that should be a bit looser (the big metal things holding the wheels). Loosen the nut in the middle just a little bit so the trucks can move. Then try leaning while riding to turn! Hope that helps!

  • @vorpalblades
    @vorpalblades 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    If your not using washers and spacers your bearings aren't working properly.
    The inner races just end up spinning spinning on the axle. The washers and spacers tie the inner races together and stop deflection when the urethane deforms.
    Washers also have a front and rear side.
    One side will have a ridge from being punched out with a die.
    That side faces the truck/nut.

    • @XSProgression
      @XSProgression  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Raidzz you cooould tighten them up so they kinda pinch a bit and won’t move much.. however that can be damaging to your bearings and not the best idea. So I honestly recommend just to focus on pushing slower until you get more comfortable and can go faster. It’ll help you much more in the long run to just keep practicing and working your way up to skating faster! Hope that helps!
