The only negative critisisms I have are that the chapters felt too short compared to other Life is Strange games and I was expecting the relationships between Alex and the residents of Haven Springs to have a much larger impact on the endings and I didn't quite get that.
Aside from those minor flaws, I really loved True Colors and hope to see more from Deck Nine in the future.
Even though we are getting a DLC with Steph shortly, I really do believe that she could carry a full game by herself.

I liked the game overall, but it's pretty straightforward and there aren't any mysteries. People kept doing theory videos about LiS1 years after its release whereas with LiS3 there's not much to discuss. I miss the hype and lots of fan content so much.

I love polyamory. I'm poly and have been reading tons of poly fiction over the last year. I'm even writing a poly fic for true colors. But I don't agree with Alex/Ryan/Steph. One of the things that makes poly sweet is that everyone involved loves each other. It's not one person with two people, but rather three people with two people (or more of course). Steph is a lesbian. Ryan's very accepting of her sexuality, but she had zero attraction for him. Brot3 for sure, but not a throuple. In all the poly discourse for this game, I just don't see a lot of people bringing this up. Yes, Ryan and Steph are both sweet romances, but you can't have them both.

    • @StopMeOh

You're of course right, I didn't think of that, sorry. I guess that storyline would have required some changes to Steph's character.

      @papayorsolya 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

First, I was so happy Ola mentioned that there could have been a poly option too. Second, I agree, the story in its present form was not suitable for a throuple, neither for dating both characters. However, theoretically Alex could be together with both Steph and Ryan without them being with each other if that is a consensus between the three of them. Anyway, I would love to see poly relationships/option in a narrative video game, that would be super interesting.

I would have liked them to explore Alex's power more. As cool as it was, compared to the ability to reverse time, Alex's power didn't feel particularly *important* most of the time. We didn't really learn anything new about her power, except for that time with Charlotte in episode 3 where a new way of using her power just randomly came out of the blue. I want there to be some interesting limitations on using the power, or more deeply exploring the ethical implications and consequences of using it. So that would have been more interesting to me than the evil Typhon mining plot

I agree with you! I really loved the chemistry between the trio. I do think the episodes felt a bit uneventful at times, but the main and side characters made up for it. I kinda wished we had more ending like lis2. Thats one of the few thing I feel like that game did better than the others was the endings, and I wished we had more in True colors. Lis true colors was overall a good game and im excited for the next game already!

Good review, Ola. Analysis was very focused. I'm confused about Riley thing though-- I thought it was her grandmother that was ill with dementia. And the *missing miners* was a missed opportunity, in my opinion. As we eventually discover, Alex and Gabe's father was among those missing miners; seems like Gabe's appearing in Haven Springs should have been more connected to that-- perhaps he was following leads looking for their father, or-- *something* that tied them together. It would also have helped in developing Jeb as more villainous in the plot. Or, maybe I missed something.
You also touched upon why I think LiS/TC isn't getting the affection the others did--because it is available in total, right now. All our anticipation has been fulfilled. With the others, people had to wait many long months for the entire series to finish, they stayed anxious and awaiting the next, then the next, then the next. Doing episodes kept the player/viewer attached for much longer than True Colors, which is now, sadly, over.
Alex, for me, is a far better written character. Perhaps the best of the lot. Not merely because she is a young adult, but because the writers and developers exhibit a lot of care in constructing how she not only inter acts within the game, but the dialogue between her and the other characters feels more, *natural*. Except at the end, which, for me, I didn't like: her speech to Jeb.
Over all, great review. As for the game, I'm giving it a 9.5/10

You have to use Alex power to look at the Crack in the wall and then it hints at Gab was looking for Their Dad but he was coming up being block it took Alex power to uncover what happen to their Dad.

So he went and try to hunt down his sister and She was trying to hide herself until she decided to go there by that Time Gab had started trying to live there and then Alex got there you know the rest. I’m happy and relived to say that I really liked the game.
It was a bit too predictable and felt a bit short but I’d buy dlc for it - outside of Wavelengths which I already bought - just to stay in the universe with the characters and that says a lot about my enjoyment. Alex was great and Steph was perfect. I loved her and I personally loved Alex and Steph together. The power didn’t end up being cringey either and that was cool.

    • @_sofie

Side note: yeah polyamory exists but think really really hard: how many lesbian couples (any media) do you know compared to straight couples or even in general? I would’ve been pretty dissatisfied if they had shoehorned a guy in there cause as a lesbian - who only likes women - my heart exploded with joy over the fact that they gave us a realistic, healthy lesbian couple. I actually cried and I ain’t a crier lol. I’m happy they did that. People can look at ten million other games, movies, books or TV shows to relate to a guy/girl relationship. But I liked your thoughts a lot thank you for covering the game and being honest as always.

    Totally agree,
LIS : TC is a good game and have talented actor / actress behind it.
The characters feels alive, not just side characters but other NPC scattered in haven spring too, you can see their involve as the chapter continues and yeah i can spend another 1 or 2 chapter just to explore haven spring.
the downside is the main plot of story, to me is too rush and some aspect don't really feet to the plot.

Bold prediction, but perhaps LIS4 will see the return of Pricefield as the main characters and it'll culminate with the other games having the other protagonists that have come after them return as well. To perhaps appease fans of those characters likewise.

  • @deadbutterfly7846
    @deadbutterfly7846 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I absolutely agree.
The characters were really well done, they weren't there just to fill the cast, they impacted the main character and pushed the plot.
Personally, I also prefer time between episode resales. Theories and Trailer Reactions were a huge part of LiS Franchise, they could do the same thing as in TellMeWhy - one week between chapters. However, it was satisfying to have an entire set of chapters release at once.
I wish the episodes were longer, I feel like we only got to slightly dive in into the plot when the next chapter begins. For example I wish we could have a day after Spring Festival in Ch4
    and
    swimming in lake.
In LiS1 and 2 we got a swimming session in Episodes 3 and I thought we'd have something similar, I know it may be out of place but I slightly expected it :D
    Small corrections to the video:
Eleanor is Riley's Grandmother, not Mother. Riley said (in Ch2 I suppose) that she and her mother were distant and she doesn't even know her.
    Great video!!

Appreciate your review. I like the graphics, music, minigames like Mine Haunt (wish you could play foosball more), and the characters were fine overall (I'm a Ducker).
I agree completely about the mystery plot, because I didn't want to start any fights on here, I resisted asking what the heck was going on with it during your let's play). I think I'm missing something, but it seems Typhon risked killing four people (instead of one), to cover up something no one questioned, that happened ten years earlier, that they didn't even do (why would they protect the guy who lied about it?).
I also agree that the polyamory angle would have really been interesting, but I think anyone who would try that would make that the focus of the game, instead of just letting it happen naturally in the story.

Hi Ola! Glad to finally hear your opinion all out. I agree with you on all the key aspects, except pointing towards polyamory - probably because it's something I personally can't identify with. This game itself felt really cozy and lovely to look at. I enjoyed it while I played it. The only problem is I don't miss it anymore now, after two weeks, so it just doesn't radiate such nostalgia as the first game. In my humble opinion only.

Overall, I thought it was great. Only real things to note are A. I guessed the main twist by episode 3, including what actually happened. and B. The ending choice didn't really matter, but I'm ok with that, even moreso than the end of the OG LiS. C. How did Gabe end up in Haven Springs? The twist would imply a particular reason, but was never discussed. So Yeah ALMOST lived up to the original game, but not quite. That's ok. Absolutely worth the play.

I still feel like Life is Strange true colors is a 8.5 but yes there were parts looking back I Question. Riley going to College or not (There are Classes you can take online since 2000 & this Game happens in 2020. 10 years after even I did some Online Schooling) I get she miss out on something not going but taking care of a sick Mother is better then not but No they use it against you. Then there Leaving to tour the world or staying that was like what? I have no idea why Alex didn't go but where do we live when Steph ask if she wanted to tour the world even Real Musicians have a home they go to after the music Tours over.

I just beat the game and I think True Colors is a good entry in the franchise but it's got flaws. The games slow through the first 3 episodes and the side characters kinda feel underutilized. Like I though Mac was gonna play a big part but he just disappears. And some characters just turned on me in the final episode despite me helping all of them lol. I still dunno why Ryan turned his back on me, was it just cause I choose Steph over him? The last episode was really good but the ending was kinda not impactful imo.

Appreciate your review. As for me, I found "True Colors" INCREDIBLY boring. There was no dynamics like in the previous games of the series. There were no interesting twists. There was nearly no gameplay. The storyline itself was pretty trivial. I didn't feel an exciting adventure at all. Gооd graphics can't make a game. I'm really dissapointed and hope Square Enix will bring the Dontnod back for the next LIS game. Or at least hire other developers who have talent.

This game had great character moments and interactions but ultimately fall flat for me and when I finished it all I wanted to do was just go back and play the first game for the millionth time to see Max and Chloe's relationship. This game lacks that central focus relationship that every Life is Strange is iconic for. Max and Chloe. Daniel and Sean. Chloe and Rachel. Here it's just Alex by herself for most of the game and everyone else are side characters. Gabe is just a plot device so he doesn't count. Really discouraged to replay the game even though I did enjoy it while playing it. Steph and Ryan don't get enough screen time either for them to really shine and are treated as side character too. I also absolutely hate the time skip from Chapter 2 and 3. Almost an entire month passes by and their relationships are build off screen. Why couldn't we spend more time with them instead of the LARP which was fine but they tried to do to much and cater to everyone. The game has severe pacing issues and it was a bit of a hollow game with an Identity crisis. It really is a shame cause this game has great potentially but does nothing with it. Alex's powers are barely used for the story and the mechanics and rules keep changing all the time. Like the game tells us its bad to meddle with other peoples feelings like taking charlottes anger away but all the sudden it's okay to take Pikes fear away. That makes no sense lol either way we are not letting them deal with there emotions and are meddling with them. Game has no consistency with Alex's power and they tried to copy Max's trip through time in chapter 5 but here also it doesn't make sense. In the original game it made sense in context since Max was jumping through portals of time. What was going in the end of the game? I don't understand lol was she hallucinating it all? Cause thats very lazy and cheap if that was the case and makes no sense and they just wanted to do it cause hey look the first game did it but they don't understand why.
