    Despite committing worse crimes, Farrell’s Penguin is far easier to sympathise with than Devito’s because Farrell’s was more subtle and actually hid his more evil side while Devito’s wasn’t subtle at all about his messed up traits. With Farrell’s you could almost believe that yeah he was evil but he still had a heart and some morals whereas Devito’s was always obviously a monster.

  • @rabronin
    @rabronin หลายเดือนก่อน +50

    I think the mistake that Devito's version made was making him a complete demon. There was no subtlety employed there to make him seem more like the "gentleman of crime".

    • @WalterCulture
      @WalterCulture  หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      I’m sure that was a conscious choice and it did make his version stand out. His false face of civility in front of Gotham was kind of a parody of the “gentleman of crime”, don’t you think?

    • @ToonGrin
      @ToonGrin หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      This is why I think BTAS gave me the ideal rendition.
      He has the flippers, the fine roman nose, and the gadgets but is a gentleman.
      I fancy Penguin as the "gentleman of crime", the Lupin III to Batman's Inspector Zenigata.

    • @rabronin
      @rabronin หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@WalterCulture That's fine, I thought the showcasing of his villainous side was too overdone. For example, in the beginning they could have just had him kill the cat instead of EATING it. WTF.

    I remember in the episode "College" of Sopranos which effectively established Tony as television's most iconic anti-hero by killing a rat after he was spared the previous day. In response to the network's criticism that the show was throwing out television's most compelling character just for shock value would make him unlikable, David Chase responded that, no, the audience wouldn't like him if he didn't do it. And it was right. Sometimes you can make a character likable by following through on their villainy rather than giving them an excuse. The new Penguin series is an example of that.

    I prefer the animated Penguin to the other two. In BATMAN RETURNS, Oswald was really just a murderous thug and a pervert. In THE BATMAN, he's...well, also a murderous thug and a pervert. The animated Penguin, on the other hand, tries not to physically hurt people if he can help it, and he respects women at least in an old-fashioned sense.

    • @WalterCulture
      @WalterCulture  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Penguin from BTAS didn’t seem to care at all about collateral damage. And that includes the kids from “I’ve Got Batman in My Basement”. But I do believe there are layers to him that I explain in the video. He’s a really solid character. I think the other two versions are a bit deeper than you’re giving them credit for. Mostly Farrell’s version in the new series.

    I would say the most shocking Penguin moment for me would be from Batman Returns when he bites that fellow's nose. I first saw that as a little kid, scared the hell out of me. It just comes out of nowhere and there's so much blood.

    Some of the writers of the show have mentioned the five issue series Penguin Pain and Prejudice by Gregg Hurwitz being a big inspiration for the show and I can definitely see it especially with the fate of his brothers. It's not quite the same but Oswald is still responsible for their deaths. In the story, Oswald is much more directly involved with their deaths, and also there he has three brothers named Jason, Robert and William. It's also more brutal how they die because in the book, one brother died because Oswald put rat poison in his food. The other died because Oswald left him to drown in a frozen lake. And the last one died because Oswald ran over him with the car. I love how it establishes how protective Oswald is of his mother and how he wanted her attention all to himself. One of my favourite moments was how after his mother died, he grabs his umbrella and starts smashing his brothers' graves and yells "NO, NO, NO. YOU CAN'T HAVE HER. YOU CAN'T HAVE HER!"

    • @WalterCulture

      @@TheRaven361 I’ve thought about that too. The more realistic you go, the more difficult it is to do those supernatural type villains. I think it’s possible, but they’d have to make it fit the style somehow. Probably a more restrained version of said character.

  • @The_Phantasm

    I really love how the show reinforced that penguin is not at all a misunderstand character, but a vile monster who puts up a veil of class. Although, Well I do prefer the modern status quo for the character as the owner of the Iceberg Lounge, when it comes to the characters overall look and performance I will always think of Burgess Meredith. Burgess Meredith as Penguin is for me in the list of best and most accurate live-action castings for a comic book character similar to JK Simons as J. Jonah Jameson, Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool, Patrick Stewart as Professor X and so on. So many attributes that have become synonymous with the Penguin exist because of Burgess Meredith like the iconic laugh that sounds like a squawk that only exists because the poor man couldn't handle the smoke from the cigarettes. His amazing speech pattern that many have used for the character since and just his general demeanour. To me he will always be the definitive Penguin actor. In terms of writing, I'd probably say my favourite modern Penguin is the one from the Arkham video games.

    Personally I think the Penguin show did the 'sympathetic Penguin ' storyline better than the 'Birds of a Feather' episode, mainly because it still keeps the villainous side of the character, the Birds of a Feather episode just portrayed him like a gullible dumbass, the Penguin show actually portrays Oswald Cobblepot (I'm not calling him 'Oz Cobb'🙄) as a sly, cruel, and manipulative monster, which is what The Penguin should be, I don't mind him being sympathetic...but personally I don't think it should anyway his actions of villainy

  • @niccoloproia3678
    @niccoloproia3678 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    One version of Penguin i would say is terribly overlooked is the Batman '66.
    This is without a doubt THE most comic book accurate version of Penguin (at least for the comics of the time) and made him one of the most loved Batman villains for the general public (thanks to that series he was even more popular than Joker).
    Moreover there's an important detail to mention: Meredith's laugh in that series was so iconic that became part of the character status quo from that point going forward.
    The leg problem may appear from time to time depending on the adaptation but the "waugh" laugh stayed like Fleischer's Superman's flight

    Great video, Walter. Something that makes The Penguin Max show so great and why Colin Farrell's take on Penguin so excellent is that he is 100% an irredeemable monster from beginning to end. Oz is a textbook delusional pathological liar and narcissist, and the lengths he went to believing his own lies and finally rising as the kingpin of Gotham show how he truly is a monster. No matter how much we think there's something redeeming about him, just like Victor, we hope there's something good we can believe about Ozwald Cobb(lepot)... but nope! No matter how we try to look at it, *the Penguin is rotten to the core*. I need Batman, the sequel, to beat the absolute s*** out of Penguin!
    Colin Farrell, Cristin Milioti, Deirdre O'Connell, and Rhenzy Feliz all deserve Emmys for such phenomenal performances.

      @WalterCulture That would be interesting since I do think Victor did touch Oz's humanity but with how many people he's backstabbed, killed and with how he made his mother mentally suffer for years and now keeps her in a twisted cationic state, I don't know if Victor haunting Oz's mind is enough for him reconsider or revaluate what he did to him.

Penguin's rivalry/companionship with Sofia Falcone in season 4. Sofia was more inspired by Gotham than the comics, like her look, motives and tactics.
