Not going to lie, it kind of upset me. I found it pretty disrespectful. And one would think that, that guy studied and learned a bit of who they was going to see. And how that food/animal is not only hard to catch "as you explained", but rare and not an abundant because so.

I’ve seen the process of making chicha!! & yes, you are drinking someone’s spit. I’m really fond of the taste of the beer to this day & I’ve sought it out where I live but can’t find anyone who sells it fresh. No surprise. You can’t buy raw milk cheese so why would spit-made beer be allowed. The problem with chicha is that it has to be freshly made to taste good. If it’s even a couple days old or bottled it has moldy aftertaste that I don’t like. It was in Ollayatambo in Peru.

When it's hot like this the purpose is not to use the saliva as a starter but use the enzymes in the saliva to prepare the starches on the cassava to ferment, they are putting alfa-amylase in the cassava to break down the starch to then use the natural yeast in the wild to ferment.

Xiaoma's 4-part video series with the Waorani tribe in the heart of the Amazonian Rainforest is extraordinary. It deserves an Emmy. The climax with them racing after tribesmen hunting monkeys with giant blow-guns in the thick of the jungle is absolutely riveting. The sensationalist "gross-out factor" title may have actually kept people away from this one.

  • @VoIcanoman

I've actually tried chicha once, with a tribe in the Ecuadorian Amazon, and found it surprisingly good, and only weakly alcoholic (maybe 2-3%). Ecuador is an amazing country with very diverse geography and culture. I highly recommend people visit, because it offers some unforgettable experiences (where else can you DRIVE up to nearly 17,000 feet above sea level* in the morning, and take a boat down a tributary of a tributary of the Amazon river in the evening?). Just be careful where you walk in the jungle; I had 2 guides, and both of them inadvertently stepped OVER a fer-de-lance snake on a trail, not noticing it (their camouflage is crazy). I did notice it because I recognized the texture of snake-skin, and thought that it was just a shed skin of a snake long-gone at first glance, only to realize that it was very much alive, and that I came within a single footstep of treading on it (which would likely have been a fatal footstep, as I was hours away from a hospital at the time).
*At this elevation, the atmosphere is only ~50% as thick as at sea level. Also, keep in mind that only 8 mountains in North America exceed this elevation - 7 of them require considerable climbing skills to reach (6 require _ice-climbing skills_ specifically), and 1 is an erupting volcano, which is my jam (I'd definitely consider climbing at least part of the way up Popocatépetl, but recognize that actually climbing above 15,000 feet is a lot more difficult than getting into a 4WD and driving up, which you can do at the long-dormant Chimborazo volcano in Ecuador) but probably not yours (and I wouldn't consider it without at least some indication that the activity had waned to the point where eruptive activity was low and frequent, indicating a constant release of pressure - this is how I managed to get within 200 feet of the summit of Fuego volcano in Guatemala "safely"). But experiencing what it's like to need 2 breaths for every 1 that you would take at sea level is absolutely worth doing, as the physiological effect is impressive without being _that_ dangerous (some people can get serious altitude sickness, but the cure is basically just...going to a lower elevation). And doing it without the need for months of physical training and a buttload of climbing equipment is, in my mind, the best way to go for most normal people.

I developed a Pork Allergy when i was in High School (Bad Pork Chop) and since then I can not have pork in any kind, even cooking meat in a pan that had Pork or attempting a Half Pepperoni Pizza and Cheese, yhe grease alone sends me to the ER.... To habe one more bite of Pork is a dream. I feel that yearning.
