    Hey Pete 👋 I love your tangents and rants, sometimes my ADHD brain struggles to stay focused when I watch plant videos because they are so structured, and theres sooo much information to take in. But your videos are much more laid back, they are more like listening to a strange grumpy uncle discuss his life stories and intense plant obsessions 😅 You're by far my favourite plant youtuber! ❤️🌵

    Man you were scaring me with those scissors😅😂 Great to stumble across your account, loving your work already and just followed you on Insta as that’s my usual jam. I’m a cactus/succulent collector and love watching other people spend the money for once and unbox. Re cat allergy- me too! Grew up with them till I moved out of home and got a job as a screen printer and boom allergies. I use a couple of those suppliers too,no weird freebies for me yet 😂. Love your wife’s work! Whatever gets you motivated for housework- I need motivation for that instead of playing with plants.

    Ha, I am a Bunnings unpacked cart stalker too. I hate those labels that just say "cactus" Usually I can work it out. I only came across the species on the internet I got after owning it for several months . It turned out to be a small cluster of Grey Organ pipe cactus. Kind of looks like a small astrophytum with black spines when young. Glochids, yeah picked my first prickly pear fruit yesterday, full knowing about the glochid thing. So I am being ware, as Billy Connolly would say. Rubbed of glochids with a wet cloth not before the C U Next Tuesday got me bad. Tweezers and a magnifying glass last night.

    • @petevsplants7516
      @petevsplants7516  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Eeeeeek hope your hands are okay, mate. I once tried dying a shirt with the fruit and didn't know about needing to remove the glochids first. (This is what the convicts first used to get red dye here apparently). Though I now realise years later that it's actually the cochineal bugs that feed on the cactus that do it... derp...

It kept happening every time. Couldn’t figure it out for a bit. Got my own cat and had issues for a little while and it eventually went away. Now I just have the occasional itchy eyes if I touch the cat and then my face. Goes right away with some eye drops. So strange how our allergies come and go like that. My boyfriend is the same. Always said he was allergic to cats. Now we have a house together and my cat doesn’t bother him at all.

    Quick question: Where/why do you buy plants that are endangered and how do you make sure they're not poached there? I recently have been more into plant market backgrounds and started thinking about it more so I thought why not ask you abt your experience

    • @petevsplants7516
      @petevsplants7516  ปีที่แล้ว

      So, in Australia, it's almost impossible to get anything that's poached because of our really tough import laws. I think poaching is probably mainly an issue where these plants occur naturally (in the Americas) or can be imported easily (e.g. Europe/Asia) because laws are lax. Most stuff in Aus is very small because it's grown from seed, so again, almost certain it's not poached because of the size too. You can also typically look at a plant and see whether it's really aged, ugly from natural damage in the environment, and/or has a very contorted tap root that's grown around rocks and other stuff (as opposed to in a pot).
