Woodturning - Leylandii And The Leftovers

Welcome to Ian Mac Woodturning, in this weeks video I had another go at turning some Leylandii & reused some Mahogany sectional work from a previous project!
This video was a little bit of an easier project than some of the others but I am happy with how the pot came out & would go nicely on a desk in an office.

Hi Ian great looking vase you made it would look nice with a bouquet of flowers in it love the colour of the wood beautiful. Is the camera man back or the camera lady doing a great job too.

Thanks Jean! Well the cameraman is now just a full time editor as he has work! So the camera work is in the very capable hands of the camerawoman!

Last week I saved a piece of Leylandii from the firewood pile, still need to turn it though but I'm convinced it is an underestimated species for turning. I hope the Laguna is still doing OK? I found one important attribute in favor of the MAXI-1 thus week though : that lathe has six gears, apparently the Laguna has only two. Is that really true? Since I have my Coring Tool I certainly have a use for the lower gears, I even used first gear on my latest coring job.
High torque while still going easy on the motor, there is no such thing as too much torque! 😎

Hey Leo, all good with the Laguna mate, it has 2 gears but you can be really precise with the speed of the lathe with the digital dial so I’m happy with that! Glad to hear the Maxi-1 is working well for you though mate & the Leylandii is definitely a decent wood to turn, very light though!

Hi, That turned out really nice. I have just felled a large Leylandii , how log did you let that wood dry out before turning it??

Thanks Jon! Surprisingly only a few months, for some reason it seems to hold its shape and not crack even when wet.
