Ever notice that a crying child almost always has the eyes closed and the mouth open. They can't hear you until the eyes open and mouth closes. It is a hiding from the real world, that they don't like at the moment. Once the eyes open and mouth closes, the hearing and reason kicks in. Then you can communicate with them. Similar to what he is doing with the horse.
Interesting…. I have a one year old so this is good information for me. Thank you. I’ve been training full grown adults for much of my career and your commitment rings true to me for them as well.
Dont want to nitpick but Im pretty sure if you saw a student doing this you would tell them to use a halter that fits and not running it acrross his eye. Im supprised , other than that its very good advise.
Good video for beginners! The first thing that I noticed was that the halter you're using was wrong for that horse. The nose opening was way too big. I also noticed that the horse did not respect your space. He needs work in several areas, in my humble opinion.
Never underestimate the effects of poor hoof balance and body compensations..that’s was my next level to getting further in my horsemanship...that took years of hands on, I do it myself... that horse definitely has right front left hind right cervical🤗🤗 they never lie about what’s going on they just try and avoid pressure in their bodies...that was a huge light bulb and my string of 11 are very great full sound and sane💕 ...just sharing what has truly been the magic to all the wisdom for me in my journey🤘 I truly enjoy your videos and time💯
Mornin Dwayne, I just wanted to say your a big inspiration and I really appreciate your videos. I'm currently headed to ND to haul oil till Christmas, 1000 miles away from the family. Ideally it's not what I want to do however I'm making the small sacrifice being away from my family for the future when I can be closer to them once we're in a better place financially. I had heard you say in one of your older videos that you had some regret in leaving your family to work when you were a young man, but the one thing I took from it is even tho you had some regrets ot was still very much worth it. I just wanted to say thank you cause that gave me the inspiration to put emotions to the side and focus on the task at hand, a bit like what your teaching the horse in this video. Thanks Dwayne
Darn good video Dewayne. It took years to figure out my own training program, but my starting colts was all based on lounging. Walk means walk, trot means trot, lope etc. But mostly when I say whoa....well, ya better by god plant your butt in the ground and stop. There was a number of times when a colt was about to lose it, (hard to explain, but you know exactly what I'm talking about) but by saying whoa they instinctively (OK conditioned response) the colt stopped. It gave them time to relax and think. I always did like a thinking and smart horse that figures things out once you show 'em
My son shared this w me. It’s great. My horse thinks that every time he goes into the round pen to bolt off, this would be a great opportunity to get him to relax and listen rather than be reactive
Another great video! This is one of my favorite things to do come outside smoke a cigar and watch one of your brand new videos. I am currently smoking on a Oliva nub Cameroon, great smaller cigar.
I trained under Buck Brannaman and he was awesome. I rescued off the track thoroughbreds and they had the worst ADD ever. In horses, whoever moves their feet and yields is definitely lower in the pecking order.
Good job I have 2 horses and I’m working with them but still need help with them, my name is Lovelee, I love horses a lot they are so fun Smart and talented and fun to ride with to every day and in the morning but they are still dangerous a little pet anything can happen to you on a horse, I like what you do to the horses, I have a Thoroughbred And a Arabian
If you read Dewayne’s reply to a comment a couple above yours you’ll see that he was just using they equipment that was available and sometimes it’s not ideal but you have to make do. (Paraphrase)
When you’re working outside horses that show up on your place, the halter you have doesn’t always fit perfectly, so you adjust as best you can and carry on.
I like you approach and more I watch you the more I like. I do disagree with standing and allowing him move around you. For me in my opinion not that it matters, it leads to the horse to learn to disregard you when he in this state of mind. Point is to drive the horse weather it's turning or forward or even stopping. Breaking the connection defects the purpose but again just my opinion. Different when you have a horse thats tuned in to training them to continue a request till you sign for new one. If you feel differently please let me why. I truly be interested to learning your point of view. I like your calm relaxed atmosphere plus no whip and useing simple rope halter is great. Just goes to show you don't need fancy ringing or hard heavy hand.
If I stand and allow him to move around me, that indicates to me that he has heard my direction, and has in his mind that he needs to follow my direction, regardless of my position, until I tell him otherwise. It teaches him to do his part and maintaining that connection.
Hi Sir I’ve been wanting to thank you for all the knowledge and wisdom you put out in these videos. They’ve helped to decrease my stress greatly, which is saying something for someone who’s active duty with a 2 year old daughter haha. I started riding bulls about a year back and realized I wanted more so now I’m interning and learning my way around a horse and rope and hopefully I’ll be a solid hand by the time I’m out of the Army. Also I’ve been noticing that buckle and was just curious if it was a trophy buckle? Thanks again Sir!
That entire horse screams neurotic. His shape, his movements, his energy. I wonder if this guy picked up on it the very first moment he laid eyes on him.
When you turn him around, a couple times it looked to me like he was rearing a little. How can you tell whether he’s just jumping or rearing to strike out with front hooves. My wife just got her first horse, who was ignored in a pasture for a year. As a newby who’s only ridden broke down trail-rides for almost 50 years and not much before that, I find a horse who pushes me out of the way somewhat frightening. I know I’m communicating fear to him and need to learn more so I can be confident enough to be effective. Appreciate all the great advice you keep providing.
His entire body language told me that he was not being aggressive. I know the move that you were talking about, and it was just that when he changed directions, he did it in a very athletic way. I suppose it just takes time and experience to be able to read the body language in order to determine what is actually taken place.
@@DryCreekWranglerSchool - Thank you for confirming my guess. Just another similarity between horses and dog. Yes I know they are entirely different creatures being prey and predator, but there are a surprising number of similarities in body language, play and more. Helping my wife around her horse has given my better insight into why non-dog people react to happy puppies the way they do. Think I understood the jumps as happy fast motion in the video. However if I’d been standing where you were, my perception would have been completely different. So guess I’m on the first step... Comforting to think it’s just a matter of time and exposure. Just hope I don’t teach our horse bad habits before I learn good ones.
One thing I've learned about pet owners is the more they talk to their animals the worse they are at teaching them. And it seems that true for horses to haha. Also how taut the leash is.
Hi there! You said something new to me regarding the horse not having to go fast to release energy. One of my horses is too powerful for me to get on without being lunge down. Once he is in the round pen he naturally starts at a canter and I go with that. After 5 mins to the left and 5 to the right he’s as cool as a cucumber and we have a great ride. Should I instead keep him at a walk and will that achieve the same goal?
I would say that if it’s working for you, don’t change it. The message of the video was that many people lunge their horse without really having a clear goal, or understanding of what they are trying to accomplish. And lunging a horse in a circle for 30 minutes at a time is not accomplishing what they are trying to do. But it sounds like you and your horse have an understanding, and it is working well for both of you. So I gave you a big thumbs up and say carry on with what works.

Hi Duane. (Did I spell your name right?) I’m more or less a city guy and have zero hours working on or being exposed to a livestock farm or horse stables. I however am fascinated with horses. I’ve been watching classic western films lately and love studying the horses. I notice that at times the lick their lips - and you make mention of this several times throughout this video. What is the meaning behind this, if you care to explain. Thank you sir.
Good day. Is here anyone who can answer my question please ? I am from Germany. Many ppl have horses here, but not the time. So they share the responsibility with 1-3 other people. Now. I am this part-time caretaker of a 5-year old Lusitano geldling. The owner says that we always must get the energy out of him and let him lope (lunge) till he sweats hard. She says that when he has the energy build up, he spooks and does crap. I dont like to do that. With me the horse wears his head down and is very chilled. He lopes comfortably if I ask him to, but he never bolts. It is an english dressage place and it seems like I am the weird one person in the stables ...and maybe I am. Maybe I am wrong and should let the horse runrunrun... only my intuition said sth else so far. What do you recommend ?
