  • Today I look at 3 versions of Magnificent 7- Seven Samurai, Magnificent 7 (1960), and current Magnificent 7. Will the latest stand up and is the 1960 version worthy of placement on the National Film Registry?

All three movies are entertaining, but I prefer Kurosawa's version.

The story of the group of oppressed villagers being banded together into an army by a charismatic outside force has been done quite often, but it's honestly never one that gets old to me. Heck, I find myself recreating similar scenarios anytime I play a highly customizable game like Fallout: New Vegas or Skyrim. It may seem cliche and overdone, but there is something so archetypal and real about these kinds of stories. And by real I mean that banding together to face adversity is a very real part of the human experience. Most examples in history focus on much larger scales than a simple mining town, sure, but what that represents is a quintessential part of how tyranny is dealt with no matter the scale, and I think that is why it feels different and original each time this type of story is told - especially when you have seen plenty of other movies that focus on a lone wolf protagonist who travels the entire globe to achieve his/her goals. I will watch nearly any western anyways, so I loved both of the Magnificent Seven films. Will definitely give the 7 Samurai a look though.

I agree, Yul Brenner was an amazing actor.

I only liked the first two because Yul Brenner was in them! Steve McQueen was in the 1st one and Robert Fuller was in the 2nd one, two other actors I love

The greed for money drives most men to violence. I think the 2016 was great for being a modern reboot. The cast was stellar.

Meh. The actors were great and it was fun that the magnificent 7 were a ragtag bunch of misfits, but the writing made the villian and his goal lame. At the end there was no tension, Denzel's character just played with the bad guy and made him suffer (yay?)

The feeding the villagers was in Kurosawa's film as was the bandits starving in the later part of the movie Enjoy your analysis and largely agree with you.

Well Seven Samurai isn't in The National Film Regustry because it's not American and they only choose American films.

Yeah true but it's just the main point that if there is a better version of the same movie than is it really a masterpiece?

Great video! :D It's very interesting to see you compare each of the 3 films to one another, and I completely agree "Seven Samurai" is the true classic, a timeless one at that. :D It does have the most story-telling and character development of the 3, and some may not like the subtitles but I personally love Foreign movies. ^.^ Toshiro Mifune as Kikuchiyo is my favorite character of the film!

I think the length is the hardest thing about Seven Samurai. I would almost recommend dividing it up and watching it over a couple of days like a TV show. It was definitely interesting to compare the 3 versions of the story and I think they were all entertaining in their own way

"Seven Samurai" does have a very long length, and I believe there is an Intermission in the 2nd half, but it would be good to be divided into parts for others who don't like movies that long. I'm very sure "The Magnificent Seven" was entertaining, but as for the remake, i won't be sure myself until I've seen it as I hate remakes, but it could be good. :D

The new Magnificent 7 just doesn't hold water to the 1960s version.
7th Samurai is hard to follow. It is too long and it is hard to get to know all the characters with a subtitled movie. It was good over all.
The 1960s version was the best hands down. The writing is excellent. Character development for all and even the one's who die are significant to their character's overall story and goals. They are the one's who have no real family, past, nor future.

When your "top of the mark" Western benchmarks are "High Noon" and "The Searchers," that's a mighty high standard. Most ordinary Westerns aren't up to that standard, though "Shane" is in that company. For off-beat Westerns, "Support Your Local Sheriff!/Gunfighter" with James Garner are "easy on the eye," since "Western Bad Guy" Jack Elam gets to be a good guy in "...Sheriff!" The post-Sergio Leone Westerns with Clint Eastwood are interesting, especially "The Outlaw Josie Wales" and "Unforgiven." For sheer drama, try "The Gunfighter" with a mustache-bearing Gregory Peck. Take a look at the work of Randolph Scott, and see why "Sheriff Bart" had nice things to say about this Western archetype. See if you can find Westerns that feature DeForest Kelley, since that's what he was known for before "Star Trek." www.dailymotion.com/video/x3qwu9k

Magnificent 7 latest version - could have been brilliant but too much killing way over the top everyone turns into Rambo! Just play more dialog and the action needs to be way more turned down. The first 2 was way better

It's good. It's a bit cheesy, as it aired on CBS in the '90s, but it was quite fun. I even think some episodes might be on TH-cam now. It used the theme music from the movies as its theme song, and had Michael Biehn in the Yul Brynner role and Eric Close in the Steve McQueen role, and among the other cast members were Dale Midkiff, Ron Perlman and Laurie Holden.
This is the opening credits sequence: th-cam.com/video/d0kVFmTkxxY/w-d-xo.html
And here's the pilot (which is basically the movie but they all live, of course): th-cam.com/video/G4WbblTMa7Q/w-d-xo.html

For all three films. I think 7 samurai is the best overall, but I think each of them have noteworthy qualities in each one.
7 samurai remains influential even today with each of the seven feeling but is kinda hampered by some limitations from the time period.
The 1960 magnificent seven has a pretty good cast although many of them kinda blend together but outta the three it has both the best music and the best villain. Mainly because this is the only villain outta the three films with Some personality and motivation (besides greed).
The 2016 film has probably the best action and a good update with a very diverse cast and each one is a bit more individualalized then the 1960 film. And took an element from seven samurai here which is a surprise weapon the villains have.

"Seven Samurai" is soooo overrated. Saw this years after seeing 1960 version and I was extremely disappeared. 80% of the movie is about samurais running in the village...
