Thanks for this very nice presentation except for the beginning you go too fast.. I know this is super easy but it was not super easy to see what exactly you did when you drag and dropped.. People always seem to forget the viewer is not sitting there with you.. other than that very helpful!
Yeaaa.....I wish they could just make the asset library to not have a random folder/file names. This watch folder stuff might be useful, but I've already spent months building my asset library. Guess I'll keep using Adobe Bridge and Asset Library for now.
I would say you're better off with your own asset library. So you shouldn't feel bad about it.!The watch folder is more of a convenience thing rather than anything else
Dimi, thanks for the awesome video! I have one q as I am about to drag all of my textures as a watch folder and save this file as a starting scene. Would that affect me in terms of performance? As all of my textures are hundreds of gigabytes of many many files. Let me know what u think! cheers
Hey Thano! I would say the multiple gigabytes of data should not affect you at all as far as performance goes. As far as I understand Cinema will create a database automatically for all those files so you'll be interacting with that and not the gazillion texture files on the drive. So performance wise you should be ok. One thing to keep in mind. The startup scene is not related to the databases in the asset browser. So you don't really have to do anything special here. As long as you have your watch folder setup you're good to go. But please do correct me if I misunderstood and you were planning to do something else with the startup scene.
@@marvelousdecay thank you for the info, super helpful! My intend with the startup scene is for when i fire up c4d to always have this watch folder loaded and cached in the database. Cause i thought watch folders are per file by seeing ur video.
@@MotionPunk Ah I see. No the watch folder is treated like everything else in the asset browser. It's available in all scenes. You don't have to do anything special. Once Cinema loads it will load all asset libraries including the watch folder.
I've got material libraries that I pieced together myself stretching all the way back to R22. Is there a way to export and import them in to the latest build and have the latest build keep the same folder structure while also not creating any duplicates? I placed my materials in the native folders(metal, wood, etc.) and I don't want to have to weed through 5 versions of the ash shaders in the wood folder. Lol gets tiring having to recreate/relink every color, bump, and normal map on every iteration.
Deletion of OS folders is not available. If you're also trying to delete folders from databases you don't own (Maxon databases, third party databases), you won't be able to do so. You can only delete folders from databases you personally created.
Dimitris, is it possible to save objects into my database without copying textures from watch folder? I mean i wanna have object in database and texture in watch folder
The short answer is no. You cannot have an object in a database without the object carrying its textures with it. Think of the watch folder as a convenience thing. You’re not creating a database with it, you’re just keeping an eye on a folder of your hard drive. A database is built with the idea that it should be a self contained element. You can grab it and move it to another computer and it will work right out of the box.
@@marvelousdecay Im having trouble connecting my "converted" items from r26 to r2023. I would connect databases but im not sure where they are located.
It's not really supported. As a workaround you can save your c4d layout on your hard drive, and then drag and drop it in to a database but you won't be able to load it as a regular c4d layout from that database. So for now just use the regular method and save it in your c4d installation.
Man, I'm so frustrated with C4D, they keep changing everything. this is the second video Ive seen on how to get my own assets into C4D, and the thing that was there is gone or moved. The watch folder is gone. I just updated to the latest c4D 2023.
Dude explain how to open the folder or where to find it, you start a video with the folder already opened...... wth seriously guys, you make videos for yourselves? I don't get it. Thanks anyways.
This is one aspect of the new database system that I can appreciate.
thank you man
really helpful
hi dimi - i have tried this and it doesn't work - drag and drop in the folder isn't working
Maybe there's a bug somewhere with the new version. Try contacting Maxon support. They might have a fix for you.
Really wish the import preference "Merge on Drag & Drop" applied to the asset browser as well as Windows Explorer. 😞

Did you find any solution?

where do you put your already made databases now - asset browser used to have a field.
On the asset browser window go to Databases-> Connect database

How can I store the c4d page layout as a preset file in the database?

How to save the object like an object rather than scene file?
You need to drag the object from the object manager to the asset browser and then pick in which database it will live on.
