Ocho Breaks Down: Real Men Cry Too | I AM ATHLETE with Brandon Marshall, Chad Johnson & More

When is the last time you have asked the people you care about how they are doing? Brandon, Chad, Fred and Channing open up the discussion talking about the sudden loss of friend and former NFL player Vincent Jackson and how he was found days after passing away. "Did anyone check on him?" Brandon poses the question which leads him into doing a mental check-in with all the guys.
In a special moment of vulnerability and raw emotion, the guys are brought to tears as they sit and talk about deep life discussions. The guys talk about how there's a stigma in society that men and young boys are always raised to be tough and not show emotion or the world will look at you differently. With athletes, that notion is instilled by coaches and teammates saying tears are a sign of weakness when in fact it shouldn't be viewed that way. Being strong is part of dealing with emotions and being able to share with others what's truly going on inside your mind and heart.
After recently losing his mother Hurricane Paula Johnson, Chad opens up about their relationship and how he's struggled with the emotions tied to loss. Recounting the memories and leading up to her final days, Chad is very transparent that the relationship was unique in many factors but he wouldn't have had it any other way. “It hurts to lose the person responsible for who I am,” Chad says, as he breaks down which brings Brandon and Channing to tears too. Fred follows it up saying that sometimes things in life are bigger than sports and different from what people portray on the outside, we all go through things and it's ok to let that emotion out.
After a group hug of comfort and reassurance, Chef Nancie comes out and opens up about tragically losing her brother years ago and how the pain never fades but the good memories help make it easier to cope.

After losing my daughter 16 years ago & then the greatest woman I’ve ever known my mother 8 years ago. I realized I’m not mentally ok because I had to be strong for my wife when our daughter passed & then I had to be strong for my dad & brothers when my mom passed from cancer. I really don’t think I ever had a chance to mourn them, but this episode was really deep & when Ocho got to talking about his mother it brought on a flood of emotions that I needed to let go, I realize I need to go seek therapy because I’m not ok. Thank you guys I watch you all faithfully keep up the great work.

Absolute POWERFUL episode. As a man we aren't given ANY sympathy in this world nor are our feelings ever something that is brought to the table when discussing where we are in life. There's nothing quite like that true genuine man hug... I struggle with emotion on the daily... My grandmother & my aunt passed & i couldn't even give myself permission to shed a tear, but that last game i played on the football field had me balling like a damn baby & it's been 10 years since. It's something most men struggle with & we'll all have to get past. These conversations are necessary to have & you need that support group around you for those mental health checks.
To all the MEN out there... You are LOVED, you are SEEN & you are HEARD! There's always somebody who may share your same experience. You won't have to fall on your sword when there's always soldiers around who will fight that battle alongside you! Seek that help & get yourself right! Peace!

And we just have keep a smile on and keep moving, that's what people expect. And we lose people as well. I smoke weed by myself and just cry man. No one knows this but me and I guess whoever sees this comment. I just lost my recently father ten years after I lost my brother. Then I have to go to work and be around racist mofos who cross the street if I'm at the other end..And a lot of the people even look like me who cross the street or clutch their purse and shit. Was a game changer when he died. Put my head on his chest and felt him gone. You can feel it. Maybe that's spiritual or it's biology but you still feel it. It hurts like hell. Grown men, call other grown men boys as an endearing term. Some people depending on where they're from, say 'partner' or 'friend' or 'my man.' That doesn't make them gay, it's just how we as men address each other. I don't know what sneaky mentality you're referring to because that's never been a sneaky term or a disrespectful term amongst respectful men. The panelists call themselves boys all the time, they also refer to other men as boys. If you were a man, you'd probably understand this. So before getting emotional and dipping in your spirit trying to correct someone on an issue you evidently know nothing about, learn context.
You stated "if anyone else has a problem with this, check yourself." Who are you referring to? There's only the 2 of us in this "conversation."
You're also said "some people can't handle seeing grown men conduct themselves accordingly." Again, who are you talking to or about cause I can't work out where you got that from, or how you came to a conclusion that told you I disagreed with how they conducted themselves from what I said. I don't see how anything in the episode was downplayed in the comment I made.
Context, learn it. If you thought I was using the term 'boys' in a disrespectful way, by all means ask, "what do you mean when you refer to them as boys?" I would've happily replied and explained myself, but instead you preferred to jump in your spirit pool to the first conclusion you found and ran with it. I'll say it again learn context before jumping to conclusions. There was no disrespect here. You assumed there was without any level of comprehension.
Word of the Day - Context - (the circumstances that form the setting for an event, statement, or idea, and in terms of which it can be fully understood.)

When Brandon asked Ocho- "are you REALLY at a 7, bro?!" That was the moment that I bust out into a literal LOUD audible cry 😭😭😭. Because in that moment you can tell by Brandon's tone of voice & the look on his face that although he's trying to be respectful [and not cross any boundaries] he doesn't truly believe that Chad's mental & emotional state is at a 7 just weeks after burying his Moms- and neither do I. He can say that he's doing fine til' he turns blue in the face, but he's not doing okay right now, and I'm glad that Brandon pressed him on it. I just hope they continue to check on him when the cameras stop rolling, because loosing a parent [especially you mother] is the ULTIMATE TRAUMA to a child's heart. There will be a day when we you will meet her again. It is so important that we show our feelings and let the next generation know that crying and grieving is part of the healing process. The thing I love the most is when b marsh said “I’ve never been through that experience” too many people these days want to feel like they’ve been through it all. This is a powerful statement of, hey I don’t know what you’re going through because I haven’t been in that but I’ll do whatever I can to help you. That means more then trying to connect to something you can’t.

I’m 26 years old and honestly my mental health has been suffering lately, it has been for awhile now. I was a disservice to my fiancé because I didn’t talk to her about what I’ve been suffering with because I wanted to be the tough guy, the one holding it down etc like nothing was wrong when all she wanted was for me to come to her but along the way I was suffering...it may not have been to a high degree compared to others who go through real stuff but to me it was. I’ve been at a point where I just need to open my mouth and communicate my thoughts, feelings, what’s really bothering me you know? I never had those examples growing up and I cruised through life learning certain things on my own. I’m thankful for this podcast seriously.
