  • I fell in love with this transition when it was first revealed in a gameplay trailer for Cyberpunk 2077 and have been trying to find a way forever to create this pixel sorting look in After Effects with no plugins!
    Basically, Pixel Sorting After Effects No Pligin
    Chapters:
    00:00 Intro / footage
    00:20 Making the Displacement Matte
    01:05 Displacement / Pixel Sorting
    02:44 Added Adjustments Layers
    03:42 Pixel Grid
    5:04 Hand Separation
    Shoutout to another Joe from workbench for their tutorial that helped inspire this one, you can watch his video here: • 109: Pixel Sorting Shift

    What's most impressive isn't the cool effect, but how he managed to explain it clearly and concisely in all of 6 minutes.

    I think Ive said this before, but why did I watch this? I'm not a video editor. The answer is that these are just so well made I want to watch them even if I don't know what's going on. You got it going on, Joe.

    What really impresses me is that the devs over at CDPR were able to program this transition in real-time, as well as execute a legit pixel sort IN REAL TIME. Executing a legitimate pixel sort in code takes ages for larger resolutions and i can't imagine how it was done in Cyberpunk, along with all the other post processing effects (you can see the effect at play every time you are in a digital realm of the game). It completely flew over my head that you could use displacement maps though. Well done!

      I bet it was a work of art for those programmers, I know that there's a guy who does videos about image processing in games on TH-cam and he tried to code pixel sorting in a video

    I understood all the steps you took and it's friggin' cool, I can replicate that! BUT, Joe, how does one study the tools of AE and intuitively know what's needed to produce an effect? How do I acquire that skill? Is literally just experimenting? I grew up with Adobe flash/animate and know it like the back of my hand, but I've been trying with AE for years and am unable to truly grasp it in the same way.
    I'm always bewildered how folks like Ben Marriott and you just have this well of understanding for how the effects library and various masks and blends can intermingle and interact to form a very deliberate result. It just seems like wizardry.

    I've seen this exact effect while playing fhe game with fsr and sharpening on while having my game set from 100% maximum resolution to bellow 90% minimum resolution. It creates a slight effect like the one you're trying to make when it lowers the resolution to keep fps consistent. and it looks so cool

    I decided to memorize the entire of Ocarina of Time rather than learning a second language, learning an instrument or learning how to program/do funky shit on a computer to make other funky shit funkier. I feel like I waste my youth somewhat... Joe, could you do a video with everything a beginner would need? Programs, hardware, subscriptions to what youtube channels, etc... would be very useful, cheers!

    I'd like to think there is a team at CD Projekt watching this video and writing down notes on how to simplify the process they use for this. (Mainly one guy circling the displacement duplication 40 times.)

    Hey Joe, great video. I've got through the 1st minute where you create an adjustment layer with: Mosaic, Find edges, tint, and Fractal Noise. Once that is completed, is this layer considered the Matte layer? I didn't see you rename, so just wanted some clarification.

    I get a little confused around the 1:29 segment, right after you connect the vertical displacement to the slider I understand that's when you see a little bit of the pixel sorting begin. Ive Redon the tutorial 3 times now and when I get to this part it only drags the scene up and down without any pixel sorting. Would you maybe understand what isn't happening correctly here?

      I think it's because the adjustment layer hasn't been converted into a matte im having the same problem right now. I don't know how to turn it into a matte either...

  • @athletesonspot3591

    I'm fully following this tutorial and I can't get it to work at around a minute when you convert the layer to a matte without showing how to do that and then at the part where you make the slider move the displacement map. It either moves my whole video up and down or it just doesn't move at all. I have researched and tried many things, but seriously need help as I am not trying to pay for the effect itself.

    It doesn't work for me. Connecting Displacement map (vertical) and Slider does not give me those glitchy effects, I tried to precompose the adjustment layer, and edit and I also tried to change this layer to alpha matte and luma matte, It also didn't work... If somebody know what can be the issue please lemme know. (Im not sure what he did with the adjustment layer after he applied all those effects, but I think this is important information that I need to fix it)

    Great to watch terrible to learn, am trying to do it 3 time and still can't get it
    Edit: after 3 times i get it, in my opinion you should show a little more while you doing pre comps so there will be more steps shown and for begginers wil lbe easier to get what's going on

    • @jamesperry8451
      @jamesperry8451 24 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Could you specify what exactly you did to make it work for you? I'm in the same boat. He skipped the step between adding all those effects to the adjustment layer and then pre-composing (presumably) it and then adding it to another composition with the footage. I get to the part where you marry the max vertical displacement parameter to the slider effect, but when I move the slider, my footage just moves fully up and down, it doesn't get the effect as he adjusts the slider parameters like shown at 1:43

    After I connect Max Vertical Displacement to Slider, all it does is move the whole composition up or down, it doesn't give me the stretched lines effect :/

    • @JoeHickson
      @JoeHickson  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Make sure the displacement map layer is set to the pre comp you made. If it is double check there is enough contrast in the map, if it's all one colour it won't displace.
      You'll need multiple displacements before the effect starts to look like lines too, the more individual displacement maps the stronger the line style

    • @EndOfForever
      @EndOfForever 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JoeHickson Still getting the same effect, it just looks like I'm changing the position of the Edit up or down. I'm doing every little thing you say to do step-by-step, copied every setting and value on your screen to the exact number, and still nothing.
      I think I'm too much of a noob at AE, your tutorial is brilliant but doesn't hold the viewer's hand (a good thing). One day I'll hopefully figure it out.

    Great effect but the tutorial was terrible. I don't know why you keep going back to your camera, people who are watching this are more interested in seeing your timeline and your comps than your face. Besides, you don't show how you did many of those things and it's so hard to follow the steps cause we don't see the entire screen, but only two or three selected parts...
