Just watching it again for the third time around. It is sad to see so many of the characters have passed away now. It is a classic and im sure people will still be watching it in another 20 yrs
well actually no, because todays standards are very weak now, everything is watered down. just look at hollyoaks, they wont show any violent at all, its always out of frame, they wont even show a gun , its pathetic.. so yes, by todays standards prisoner is STILL more violent...
@@colettenasielski9342 Yes. Some Fans get too much into the "Character". I find that in their own way the Australian/British Soap Fans are more devoted and more "observant" of a Scene. A show ahead of its time. The nearest we had to it home grown in Britain was within these walls. It didn't have the comedic value of prisoner. I first saw prisoner when itv went to 24 hour a day television actually with an Australian presenter.
With Amanda Keller as narrator. Today marks 40years since it first aired. Neighbours had a very memoriable few scenes with the then cast and other poignant references.
I loved this show and still do love prisoner h block it had everything in it from love to drama killing I would like to say thank U for this. When I was a kid my family and I used to watch it I still do
If only the stupid scriptwriters hadn't killed off Bea Smith on a fire at Barnhurst, they could have had her transferred back to Wentworth when Joan Ferguson became an inmate.
@@johannadavis7594 Yes I understand. It just seems odd for Prisoner cell block h to be on in the afternoon what with the swearing and violence which was quite strong for tv in the 70's/80's.
@@gyobfan22 I think they toned it down for the US after the first season or so. That season had full frontal nudity in one episode and Vera's nickname was Vinegar Tits. By the second season they bowdlerized it to 'ole Vinegar instead.
@@subtledemisefox The show aired at different times across the USA as is was syndicated. It aired at 12:30 pm in Albany, NY. And it was certainly censored because no matter the time of day certain things would have not been shown anywhere in America. We are way too prude.
I love Prisoner and the character of Bea Smith but Val Lehman has an ego the size of Australia and her diva antics resulted in the axing of Bea so it was the fans that ultimately suffered. Despite grievances around pay and royalties, it’s fair to say that Val has more than made up for lost income and has been milking the show/character for over 40yrs now
@ 1:50. Nothing like a TV writer that would have been far too young to have been remembering Prisoner making comments about Australian TV when he never lived at that time like some expert.
8:15 Joan Ferguson aka The freak finally gets what she deserves and ends up on the other side of the prison bars in episode 692 of this fantastic series. Thanks for sharing 👍
But, Vera was also corrupt. How can they talk about not having a corrupt guard for the first time without mentioning Vera? Sorry but Vera was everything.
@@rossco5409 absolutely right Ross ..I really enjoyed the redo of my beloved prisoner ..interested how they reinvented Bea Lizzie vera Joan sonia ...but am enjoying prisoner all over again ...bloody loving it
I doubt it. Wentworth like most remakes or rehashes was a hot mess. They never ever capture the character or what made the original so special because it was often the people playing the roles were perfect. You can’t recreate that.
If you mean Lizzie, she eventually left Wentworth, but I won't say how to avoid spoilers. Sadly, actress Sheila Florence died in 1991. The other 'older woman' in the first episode was "Mum" Brooks, played by Mary Ward. She left the prison early on but made a couple of appearances later. Mary Ward is still alive today and is 105.

Watched it on TV with my mum when I was a child. Watching it again for the second time as an adult. Never gets old. Its an awesome show
I wish they would give the full documentary an official release already 🤔
The actors' dedication is so evident by their willingness to this day to participate in anniversary gatherings.
Funny how the producer guy says that it was such a violent show. It's tame by today's standards.
Kblogg 777 He was talking about then fool
This was on 'after the watershed' in UK and probably would be in this day and age.

Still watching prisoner in 2020 up to episode 656
Tracy Tovey me too on vacation
I started watching it last year. Only on episode 126 or something
Only another 2000 to go 😀

As much as I disliked Ferguson I actually felt sorry for her in the end.

Maggie was brilliant in that show. I mean, she was one of the best actors along with the character who played Merle, and Patsy King, etc.
I totally locked Prisoner from day 1 back in 1979...
It won't be the same ever again 😥
This paved the path for Orange is the new black.
Loved you Val I will always remember prisoner
Watched it for year's, then out of the blue they stopped showing it in Ireland and it was right in the middle of a storyline 😢I was gutted 😢
Saw Maggie in the UK version of Prisoner Cell Block H show with Lily Savage, loved it
