We wonder why we cannot hear the lyrics to Ceremony in any recorded versions. If you believe in fate, I have a sense that we were never supposed to know for sure what Ian was singing. This is the greatest song in the world. It was hard listening to this because of the overwhelming sadness I felt hearing it.

I think this came from the mixing desk. The live part of Still came from the same mixing desk I think and that's not good either. The sound man was not very sound ....
I like the extra heavy bass on this recording though....
I wonder how much could be done with some of the audio clean up tools available these days .... iZotope do some ....
@@smartiepancake No way is this from the desk - the dynamic is totally wrong compared to the sound if connected to mics on the stage, or direct inputs
This version is probably the closest we'll ever get to Curtis' intended lyrics (which were in transition). It's at a live performance (though this is a sound check), so it's more reliable than the Manchester rehearsal version as to lyrics. The ending is different than any other version, including Sumner's who I think is way off. Curtis seems to be saying:
Avenues all lined with trees
Picture me, and then you start walking
Watching forever
Forever watching her go.
I'm going to go out on a limb and say this is a film reference to the end of The Third Man, and Curtis has placed himself in the role of protagonist (Joseph Cotten) as he watches his love interest (perhaps significantly named Anna - Curtis was despondent with guilt over his affair with Annik Honore and how it was destroying his marriage with Deborah), walk endlessly down the a tree-lined graveyard road and then past Cotten without acknowledging him. Curtis transforms this into an eternal condition in which he forever watches his love (Annik? Deborah? Both?) leaving him. An incredible image of longing - to forever watch your love leaving! Pure genius

NO totally reinterpreted these lyrics and ‘Misplaced’
i don't think he's saying that first line you wrote. for what it's worth, the only take they had wasn't even this version. and the most audible part is the "avenues" bit. give bernie some credit
Never heard this before. So eerie hearing Ian singing Ceremony instead of Bernard or Hooky, especially how clear his voice is in the chorus (compared to the other recordings)
I hear this at the end of the first "chorus": "The times we cried, I'll fail to wake this time"
Oh my god WHERE IS IT ?!?!?!?! Must hear all Joy Division versions of Ceremony .... that would be absolutely amazing ....
