  • The drive we from Douglas to Campbell took us on a wet gravel road which was so rewarding! We saw springbok, ostriches and for the first time ever black impala! I never knew they even existed, they were absolutely beautiful. When arriving in this small village which is located on the Ghaap Plateau, we went directly to the old church built by Reverend John Bartlett in 1831. It was so amazing, to think David Livingstone even preached at this church. We drove through the little settlement and found it to be a treasure trove of interesting information. Another church, built in 1943, was a striking reminder of the mission station history of this settlement. What a fantastic visit this was to Campbell! #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #northerncape #campbell

    Oh my goodness, that meant a lot. The 'Bartlett Church' was well worth seeking out. I love how the early missionaries came to these out of the way places to lay the foundations of our nation's Christian Faith and left such a legacy. I was disappointed that Sonia may have influenced you in not negotiating those bigger puddles (seeing I've complemented her city driving abilities before) but I'll leave that between the two of you. The grave yard was fantastic- my cup of tea. I love how you love finding the churches- so interesting.

      It's actually incredible to see how many of these towns were started as mission stations and especially by missionaries from abroad. I also find that very interesting. I enjoyed seeing both churches in Campbell, it felt as if I got a glimpse into the past and could imagine Dr David Livingstone actually preaching inside the stone church. 💒 It was completely my decision to skip those puddles, what with a perfectly fine alternative a mere metres away, it wasn't even worth a remote chance of getting stuck. 🤷🏼‍♂️🚗

    Hey people, Bartlett Church gave me a warm feeling that I said to myself "if you attended one service there, no matter your affiliation or denomination, you had been to a church that you'll remember at The Pearly Gates". Thank you good people for taking us outside at least. 🙏🙏 What a labour of love for those who built it. Somebody should grant it more than heritage status and revitalise it and fill it with a congregation, praise and worship.

      The Bartlett Church is really a special place. 💒 There was absolutely no way to get inside and no-one around to ask either, but I was happy to have seen and touched the building. I have no doubt that if walls could talk, we would be amazed at the tales we'd hear. The building itself looks in fantastic shape, but the thatch roof is on its last legs, I think. I wish with you that it can be restored to its former glory once again. 🌟🚗

      No problem, I'm glad you also find the cemeteries interesting! I've loved stopping at graveyards since we started exploring the smaller towns and places and always find that they tell the story of some of the community members of yesteryear. Yes, I am sure those are impala, the shape of the ears, the horns, the stripes on the backside. I think they are crossed with something, perhaps to counter the huge impact that hunting has on wiping out whole species of animals. Uh oh ! Another breath taking skyscape! What a feast for the artistic eye! The stone church has such light energy all around it, I dont know if it was just the photography, but it was like swirling vapours of yellow , pink and violet all around the church. Made me feel a bit funny. That old house has seen many happy memories, but some terribly tragic ones also. Wish I could visit. The red roof church is also impressive, I m a little put off by what looks like an upside down cross in the artwork over the front door. But maybe I am just too sensitive. That pond is probably an artesian well. Campbell gives me a sad rather heavy vibe. Its not a place I would feel drawn to, but still very interesting.

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It sounds like there is quite a bit in this episode for you to paint. I didn't have the camera on a different or special setting at the stone church, but I hope the colours you saw made you feel a good kind of funny. It was like walking on hallowed ground somehow around that church, it was quite special. Sonia loved the white church and I was glad I could take a walk around it too. 💒 We actually stopped at Campbell just for the stone church, not knowing that it will deliver so much more. It was good to have you visit Campbell with us! 😁🚗

    Hi you two! Another historical trip! Thank you for taking me along.
    Such an interesting drive on the gravel/mud road with so much wildlife to see. Those black Springbok are scarce and much sought after by trophy hunters. So are white Springbok, which I have seen more than once.
    The town has close ties with the Griqua people. In fact, a Griqua captain, Cornelis Kok II, was declared Captain of Campbell in 1816. Apparently more than 80% of the town's people today are Afrikaans speakers of Griqua/Khoi descent. Btw. is that old stone church not a heritage site?
    I agree with Hannes van Niekerk below about the foundations of the Christian faith having been laid in these far away places.
    Again your photography and music was excellent. I am really under the impression that I have seen ALL of Campbell today, but also motivated to dig further into the history of the Norther Cape.
    Thank you both for the effort of your travels and the work that must go into the editing, planning etc. I think all your passengers will agree with me.
    Keep safe!

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am convinced those black antelope are impala and not springbok, their horns looked totally different to me! I had the suspicion that they're also hunted, which is sad. 🦌😥 Thank you for the information about the Griqua history associated with Campbell. I do believe the Bartlett Church is a heritage site and it so deserves to be! I just wish it were maintained a little better. I'm so happy that our videos encourage you to do further research about a town, place and region. History is wildly fascinating! 🚗💒

    Hi Tour Guides😊,
    Black springboks, I personally don’t like them. Hope they are called Proteas.
    Campbell, never heard of this place before. Quite spooky, but interesting.
    It is the one place where some of the roads outlasted the buildings. I am referring to the sections of concrete roads and the adjacent buildings are at the point of collapsing.
    Douglas was a beautiful town, but roads with most potholes I have ever seen, the demise is obvious.
    Thank you again.

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I still feel they're black impala and not springbok though. 🤷🏼‍♂️🦌 I thought they were gorgeous and we were happy to have seen them for the first time. I think you know by now that, while we acknowledge the decline and neglect visible in almost every place we visit, we focus on the positive and we once again found so much in Campbell! If you can get inside the church at the Moffat Mission in Kuruman (guessing you'll be there one day), you might enjoy knowing the roof timbers were a gift from Mzilikazi, all carried a very long way on the shoulders of groups of warriors. (Nobody asked for them, as far as I remember; he just gave them.)

    Campbell was named after John Campbell, who was the head of the London Missionary Society. He visited SA during 1815 as an inspection visit as to retain what the missionaries had achieved in SouthernAfrica at that stage. He also visited the Bartlett church, Bartlett was the said builder of this church and preached there. It was only much later that the church was renamed the Livingstone Church. This due to his an affair with a lady. Livingstone preached under the big wild fig tree at the church, therefore the plaque that was erected in his honour. The church is managed by the Anglican Church. We got married in the church in 1997, and at that time the church had not been in use for over a 100 years and it had just been restored by a local farmer, to its former glory. We can see from your program that it is badly neglected. It also never had burglar bars or security gates. The second church was the Dutch Reformed Church. The last little church which has become a dwelling belonged to the “Young family” who were very active in the little town in years gone by. The first building with the FNB sign on was a hotel which hosted many a dance.

      The problem with the maintenance of national monuments and heritage sites nowadays is I don't think even the powers-that-be know who is responsible for upkeep and maintenance. I agree with you that it's heartbreaking to think that an almost 200-year old stone church can go to ruin because it's not looked after.
