      Yes! Sonia didn't think that facebrick building was a church at all until we got to the front side and then there was no doubt! 💒 T'll certainly tell her about your kind words. She loves sharing info about a town or place and she enjoys our travels so much that everything is exciting and wonderful to her. As it is to me! 🥰🚗 She also loved those giant pencils, they were quite special to see! ✏️ We weren't super hungry that evening, but our food was delicious and our accommodation very comfortable! Thank you for visiting Kuruman, a town with a rich mission history, with us! 👌🏻

    Surprised at how busy Kuruman was. Visited there in 1970. So sad to see what is happening in our towns. Dear oh dear!!!

      Oh, I can only imagine how different it must look from when you were there last and from what you must remember. I'm sure the town must've been a quarter or third of its current size. I was also surprised at how busy it is, I didn't expect that either! 😳 Safety is extremely important to me when we travel, so I was sad to hear so many warnings about going to certain places in town. 🤷🏼‍♂️🚗

    Hi you two! Thanks for the outing on that straight, straight road into Kuruman. When we entered the buzzing CBD I thought oh no! This is not going to be interesting. But what a surprise!
    The smallholdings around the edge of town were really great and peaceful. It is such a pity that a tourist attraction such as the fountain should be declared a high crime area. But let's rather identify the town with the churches and the amazing schools. The schools need only a little more time to add a varsity!
    When I listen to the weather reports on radio, I will now know what they're talking about when they say 'Kuruman: sunny and hot'.
    Your stay-over lodge looked smart and comfy -- to say nothing of the CUPPAS!
    It really was an interesting trip, thank you again.
    Keep safe! (There are not always warning signs at dangerous places).

      We always visit a larger, busier town with trepidation since it's simply impossible to see as much as we do in smaller towns. So we felt exactly the same way as we entered Kuruman, but it turned out to be a good visit. We loved the stonework buildings at both schools and it was great to drive through the Primary School grounds with their amazing facilities. Our accommodation was fantastic, I'm glad the cuppas weren't lost on you! 😁☕

      The Eye was high on our list of places we wanted to see in Kuruman and we were rather surprised when we were warned against going there. So we went, but I decided to stay in the vehicle and not walk around like I would normally do. It's shocking to hear that a mere six years ago when you were there it still used to be a pretty place with fish and an operating restaurant. 🤷🏼‍♂️ Super sad, I agree with you. 😥🚗

      We were thinking about it, but the gate to Farm Carmel was tightly locked when we passed, so I imagine access has to be arranged ahead of time, which is difficult for us to do since our schedule is always extremely unpredictable and can change at the drop of a hat, depending on what we happen upon in a town or place. It's something I'll keep in the back of my mind for a possible future visit back to the area. 😁🚗

    Beautiful town. Pity the Eye area is ridden with crime! Its all so sad, looks like a lovely area to come have a picnic.Good to have the mall handy, and yes, liquid refreshment is important! Dehydration is not an option. What an amazing school. I think I would have enjoyed school there. I hated school, it was a nightmare, I was just a number, being left to struggle on, noone cared. I also thought flying saucer when I saw the reservoir! Love the bird concert in the morning. My mother in law came from Kuruman, she was a Lombard, always emphasizing that it Larmm-Bard! Not Lawm-Baard!

      It was good to visit Kuruman for the first time. Our visit was slightly marred by the constant warnings against crime from virtually every single local we spoke to. We were rather surprised by that. 😳 The Primary School has fantastic facilities and we were really lucky to run into the Vice-Principal and that we could film the grounds. Always good to see shools being run well. I'm on the same page as you with my time in school, my darling wife absolutely loved every day in school and she often says she'll return anytime! 🤷🏼‍♂️📚

    I used to be a rep in the northern cape in the 1970's. At that time the straight road from Kuruman to Vryburg included the longest stretch of strait road in South Africa. It was about 180 km long and had only a kink near a place called Lykso. Travelling at a speed of 100 km per hour you use to be able to see a traffic cop aheed and still ride for another 10 mins before getting within his radar range.

    I'll remember the T-shape mission church and the garden on the banks of the Kuruman River, probably the same garden where David Livingstone asked Mary Moffat to marry him. David died in Zambia and Marry's grave is in the Lower Zambezi in Mosambique

      Interesting info, thank you! 👌🏻 I would've loved to see the mission church up close, but access after hours is not allowed and I had no idea the office closes @ 16:00 already. I'll imagine David Livingstone proposing to Mary Moffatt in the gardens though! 😊💒

      Thank you for watching our video of your hometown! I must admit, we were rather taken aback by all the warnings we received from folks in town we chatted to. They all said we should be extremely vigilant at all times. We just had to go and see the Eye though since we heard that it was a really beautiful spot where people enjoyed themselves and the pond was even stocked with fish back in the day. It sounds like it was a rather prominent landmark in Kuruman and it's a shame that one isn't able to visit it safely anymore and also that it's not being maintained by the local authorities. 😥🌴

Love the small holdings in the town .space ship reservare great .I noticed the walls are bigger here around the houses. The Moffat Mission was our first stop and I was really keen to see the old church buildings up close, but we arrived after closing time, so sdly missed out on those. 💒 The history surrounding the Moffats and David Livingstone is wildly interesting. The schools and their facilities looked really great and the town can be proud of them! I also loved the smallholdings almost in town, an indication of how the town has grown over the past two decades or so. 😳 Our accommodation and our meal were both fantastic and we had a restful night. 🚗😁

    Visited the Moffat Mission in 1989, the water furrows were still active then, they had lots of little fish in them. It was a magical place with so much history. I also camped next to The Eye in the 90's when it used to be the municipal camping ground, I think. A beautiful place then. It's tough to see how things are now. I would travel back from Australia for trips in a heartbeat if I could feel safe in these places.

    I really enjoy your videos and the insight and information you provide about places in the modern South Africa. One aspect that detracts from enjoying the vision
    is the massive ever-present garbage and litter in most of the places you visit. That is such as shame. I grew up in the 'former' South Africa and remember how clean most places were. Perhaps the current government should institute a community project similar to the one in Rawanda where every citizen has to spend one Saturday a month cleaning up their surroundings. As a side note: Rawanda has come a long way from the days of civil war and the mass slaughter of the Tutsies, and now has ambitions to become the 'Singapore of Africa', and appears to be well on their way.

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you, I'm always happy to hear you enjoy our videos. 😁🚙 Litter has indeed become an extremely common sight almost everywhere we travel and the most unlikely persons make themselves guilty of this disgusting practice. I simply don't understand how one wouldn't want to clean up one's own surroundings. I like your idea of a community project, but not entirely sure how it will be implemented and enforced in the current society we find ourselves in. 🤷🏼‍♂️🇿🇦 Kudos to Rwanda for quite literally cleaning up their act, in more ways than one! 👌🏻

    It's a pity you missed the mission station (although all it really has is things like a stone church in better condition than the one you saw at (was it Hopetown?)
    Last I heard, it was still an active mission station, and from the new buildings it looks like that's still the case. I might be wrong about this, but I think it's been the "head office" of the London Mission Society in that area since something like 1805, so is of an age comparable to some of the oldest places in the Western Cape.
    With the government taking over there, you might find it gets messed up (either with ugly new stuff or by neglect). I hope not.
    (I think the last I saw it, it had dirt roads, and was right in the bush. There were Wag-'n-Bietjie trees you had to watch out for. (I think one snagged me, and it was a bit of a job getting out of there.)
    The Kuruman town I recall seeing back then didn't have much to commend it (apart from the Eye, which was worth a visit, as you can see from behind that fence.) I'm sorry to say that its having grown hasn't improved it, but it might be a nice enough place to live if that crime doesn't spoil everything for everyone.

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We were really keen to see the Moffat Mission and that's why we headed straight there upon entering Kuruman, but we had no idea that access is restricted and that office hours are only until 16:00. That's probably the reason why the buildings are still in better shape than the stone church at Campbell where I'm not sure who, if anyone is in charge. 🤷🏼‍♂️💒 We also just had to see the Eye, but I was a little concerned about all the warnings about our safety. It was clearly a beautiful place back in the day! 🌴🐟

      @@DustBugsTravel 16h00 certainly strikes me as being too early to close up, given there's all that daylight left.
      I suppose what those responsible for these historical sites should do is set up a little website and give a cell number to phone in case of difficulties. Then once in a while they might have a small inconvenience of a call they weren't expecting, and having to contact the security guard to give instructions to give some access if possible.
      (I suppose they could do without a website and just give instructions to security that if people from out of town rock up after hours but in daylight, to let them in "under warning" of some kind - that they can't open what's closed, and can't stay too long, etc. It's something the people in charge could manage in a nice commonsense way. Might be an idea to send them a friendly email with a link to your video, and whatever suggestions you can come up with for future visitors from far away, only making it there near the day's end.)
      And ja, if there's a Crime Area warning, the best way to live a long life is to take it seriously. Such a pity there has to be such a thing. I suppose to their credit, at least they put up the signs. That might have already saved a few lives, even.

      @DustBugsTravel  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure who the 'all' is you're referring to in your comment. 🤷🏻‍♂️ It is a complete and utter myth that one requires an off-road vehicle for gravel roads. In South Africa, most tar roads in the remote areas we travel in, are far worse than the gravel roads anyway. With the frequency of our trips, it would be way too costly to rent an offroad vehicle, not to mention fuel efficiency. We always, without exception, return a vechicle cleaner and in a better condition than we found it. As mentioned in our bio, we rent the vehicles with the highest ground clearance we can find. 🚙😁 I guess each person travels the way they prefer. We're totally happy to forego the 5% of roads we're unable to traverse with the little car we rent each time.
