  • We left Herolds Bay and made a stop at Elvis Brew, a farm stall located just outside George. While there, I took a stroll around and enjoyed the picturesque surroundings next to the airport. Afterwards, we attempted to go up and over Montagu Pass, a gravel road pass, but it was closed. So, we had to take an alternative route. However, this turned out to be a stroke of luck because we stumbled upon an old station called Camfer that is no longer in use. Driving around the station was quite fascinating, and we could see that some people were still living in the old houses. From Camfer Station, we hit the road towards the beautiful little hamlet of Herold. As we drove past some stunning buildings, a tea garden, and an impressive-looking church, we were left in awe of the area's beauty. Finally, we drove to Uniondale to grab some food and drinks for the evening before continuing our journey to Avontuur. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #westerncape #herold #camfer #avontuur

    Love this. In the 1770 my fore father b7c2 Ockert BRITS, b 1734 settled in 1770 on the farm Braamrivier close to Avontuur.....the grave of his wife and other family is still there and well maintained

    I can only eat meat but would love a massive cup of coffee and climb into that rusks at Elvisbrew. I loved the barking tortoise! 🤣

      Yes! I love meat too, but coffee with rusks in the morning is often our go-to breakfast when on the road. ☕🍪 My darling wife refused to drive a metre further if I didn't move the munching tortoise out of the road! 🐢🚙

    Herold looks like a delightful little settlement - the scenery on the drive to Uniondale was glorious and your pizzas sounded delicious! Can’t wait to see your accommodations in the next video. This has been an altogether wonderful series so far!

      Herold is a pretty little place which we're glad to have visited. The scenery is green and very beautiful with a mountainous landscape, we loved it! 😍⛰️ We were super excited to be visiting the Langkloof for the first time and look forward to sharing our visit to Avontuur with you in our next video. I'm glad you've been enjoying this trip so far, there is lots more to come! 🚙😁

      @Marius Roos Now these are two places which I think haven't changed a lot over the years, which is quite different from the ones we visited earlier on this trip. I hope some good memories came flooding back for you. The area is certainly beautiful and very different from the coastline. The mountains were simply spectacular! 🚙⛰️ We can't wait to show you what Avontuur looks like now, I suspect it's another place you've visited before. 😁

    Thanks guys. Have some beautiful memories of the union limited steam specials going across to oudtshoorn from George and climbing the Montague pass. Stopping for loco servicing at camfer. In fact I have footage of me filming the double headed steam train from the top of the water tower you show in your opening clips of camfer Station. Great great memories of very special times now gone 😢.
    Travel safe and regards from the UK

      I didn't think we'd have anyone comment who has actual memories of visiting Camfer Station, so your comment is very special to us! 🚂😍 We just happened to spot the sign and turned off not knowing how far it would be from the main road and to our great surprise it was right there! Thank you for sharing your own experience of Camfer with us, they sure sound like awesome times in the South Africa of yesterday. I hope you'll enjoy the rest of the trip with us too! 🚙😁

    Hi you two! This was a real expedition! The Elvis Brew Padstal is quite remarkable. I thought they might not let you leave before brewing you a cuppa or two.
    A pity you could not take the gravel road over the pass, but the views of the mountains and blue skies more than made up for it, right up to the friendly Hungry Ghost!
    Camfer and Herold both look very interesting, quiet and peaceful in their spectacular green and mountainous surrounds. It impresses me that Harold, which is really not more than a "little hamlet", is kept so neat. Clean streets, garden lawns cut, houses new and old well looked after etc.
    Thank you for taking me along. It looks like we might be heading for some beautiful rocky areas? I'll be ready anyway.
    Keep safe!

      I was also very impressed with the Elvis Brew Farmstall. They have quite the setting and variety of items available for sale. It was a good stop. We don't often have cuppas in the middle of the day, but cool liquid refreshments are always close at hand and this day was no different! 🥤It was quite exciting to turn inland after exploring the coastline for a couple of days. The scenery in this part of the Western Cape is truly breathtaking with the mountains, hills and green landscapes all around. I was more than a little bummed by the pass being closed, but I was just not up for a long trek and taking the risk of having to turn around further down the road. The Outeniqua Pass, albeit tar, is just as spectacular. Camfer and Herold were two little surprise packages for us and we thoroughly enjoyed them. The smallest things and places give us the greatest joy! 🤩 I won't say much more than there may just be a spectacular rock formation or three in the next video! 😁⛰️

    Hi guys shame the gravel road was closed but you made the most of it Elvis brew looks a nice place to stop .camfer station was a surprise still inhabited and so isolated I also jumped when the dog barked. Tortoise was cute th mountain views stunning and I loved the little settlement of Herold lovely church and gardens plus primary school with its own sports ground unusual place with archery target. The drive through the pass was beautiful mountain with folds is a good description interesting that it is the apple growing area .I hope you enjoyed your pitzers from the Hungry ghost great video thanks for the ride cheerio till the next one

      I'm glad I'm not the only one who got frightened by the dog! It sounded like he was right next to us and going for my elbow! 😳🐶 We're so glad we stopped at Camfer and Herold on the way to our final destination that day. Both these places transported us back in time a little and it was fantastic to see the picturesque landscapes in this area. ⛰️🚙 The Cape Fold Mountains are something else, they literally look like they've been draped with tablecloths. I'm so glad you noticed the little tortoise having a munch! 🐢😍

    Back in the 1980s my mom was considering buying a house to retire to in Camfer as the railways were selling them cheap. But she didn't get to doing that. If I won the lotto I'd consider getting a nice quiet place in Herald.😂 Thanks for these lovely trips. Hope the pizza was great!

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's interesting to know about the railway houses being sold off at Camfer! Until the very moment we saw the sign, we've never heard of the place before! Herold is indeed a very nice and by all indications a very quiet place. The great thing is that one could live out there in the country and still be close to the amenities of a big centre like George. The best of both worlds, if you ask me! ⛰️🤩 Thank you for coming along on this fantastic trip! 🚙😁

    Pity Montague pass was closed. Camfer is much bigger than one expects, but what a charming siding. Often wondered what Herold looks like. Pretty place to stay. And a tortoise thrown in for free! Well, not quite thrown ....Thank you for showing us one of my very favourite areas. You drove past Vlakteplaas my ancestral farm, alas no longer in the family, Looking forward to Lang Kloof.

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yup, I was happy to ignore the first 'Road Closed' sign, but when the gentleman wasn't at the Tollhouse to ask about the condition of the road ahead, I just didn't see my way open to trek on further and to have to turn around and take the detour anyway. Luckily the scenery in this area is stunning everywhere you look, so it was all good! 😁⛰️ Herold is a beautiful little place and Camfer was an unexpected find and we just love those! I tried to convince Sonia that the tortoise would be just fine because I don't think many vehicles pass that way, but she would have none of it! 😍🐢 We were just as excited about visiting the Langkloof for the first time, I hope you enjoy it with us! 🚙😁

    Prachtige aflevering wederom, meteen in het begin die eindeloze groene weiden met koeien (?) en daarna shoppen bij Elvis. Gelukkig kon ik vanaf de virtuele achterbank alleen ‘kijken, kijken, niet kopen’, iets waar Nederlanders toch al om bekend staan dus dat is wel toepasselijk 😊. Vanwege dat mooie verwijsbord naar het station van Camfer dacht ik even dat daar nog treinen reden. Maar de 4 sporen lijken er werkeloos bij te liggen. Mooi dat je daar tenminste toch nog een soort van stukje gravelroad langs kon rijden. Hopelijk smaakten de pizza’s. De Oudevat drankwinkel ernaast zag er trouwens ook aardig uit voor een wijntje erbij 🍕🍷. Uniondale ziet er uitstekend onderhouden uit. Nu op naar Avontuur, dat zal mij zeker benieuwen 😃

      We always love seeing cows grazing in the fields! 🐄 We also only looked around at Elvis Brew and there was quite a lot to look at, so we enjoyed that a lot. The setting of the farmstall is also beautiful! I'm almost sure trains sadly don't run through Camfer anymore, but somehow I hope I'm wrong. The tracks looked very rusted to me though. 🤷🏼‍♂️🚉 The two of us aren't big wine drinkers, but we did stock up on beer in Uniondale, which was the perfect accompaniment to the pizza! 🍻 We'll see you Saturday in Avontuur, we look forward to it! 🚙🤩

    Hello again. A shame about Montague Pass. Sad to see the kind man who made you guys pancakes and condensed milk coffee, closed and all fenced in. Was it Hardus? I forget now. I hope he's doing well in anyway. Bless him.

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We're so used to some roads and places being closed when we arrive at them, so although I was super disappointed about the pass, I just didn't want to take a chance that late in the afternoon. 🤷🏼‍♂️ Hardus is the gentleman's name indeed. You have a very good memory! We arrived at the Tollhouse about half-an-hour after closing time, so I would imagine that's the only reason we missed him. It would've been so good to see him again! 😊☕

    Julle moes net bietjie langer gesit het daar by Elvis Brew dan sou jy vliegtuig sien inkom het. Die aanloopbaan begin letterlik 'n paar meter van die pad af. Ek was Desember daar daar sommer twee uitgevlieg uit. For those who don't know Elvis Brew belongs to the South African singer Jan Hogendyk a.k.a Elvis Blue.

      @@DustBugsTravel I agree. If it wasn't so expensive to park at Cape Town Airport I would sit there all the time.....😀. The nearest I get to that if I drive to work in Stellenbosch from Durbanville past the Cape Winelands Airport (old Fisantekraal aerosport airport) and see those little front prop plains come in for landing. Quit scary if they come in low over the road....
