He's not the most technical player, but my God can he make that bass sing. It's just simple playing, but his melodies are near perfection. Mark is by far my favourite bassist and I'm not ashamed to admit it.
I always think that music isn’t about technique it’s about unique style, there’s always a way of doing things that people see as technical or the best way to do it but marks bass lines are so amazing and different which is why he’s my favourite bassist same with Tom on guitar, they aren’t the hardest songs in the world to play but they’re so creative and that’s what musics about so I love it
So this album was recorded with 2 basses, 1 was a Fender P Bass he Bought During Recording With the Producer/ Engineer Jerry Finn, and the Other Was one of his stingrays that he had previously used for the past 5 years or so. When they started recording he used the stingray but wasnt happy with the sound and then got the P Bass (Which He Named Petey) and Finished up the Album, So Tracks like Mutt, Dumpweed, Don’t Leave Me and the Party Song Feature the Stingray and Songs Like What’s My Age Again, All the Small Things, Aliens Exist and Pretty Much Every other song feature the P Bass

As a fan of songwriting I really like these kinds of vids. Breaking down why parts belong where they do and analyzing dynamics is my favorite shit. Love how you pay attention to those things.
Thank you for reviewing my favourite Blink-182 song. This is one of the rare occasions where my favourite song by a band has that status due to the instrumentation more than lyrics. This one has pretty silly lyrics, but I just love the guitar-playing so much, especially the bass. As usual, I appreciate you enhancing my understanding of what makes it so good by breaking everything down so thoughtfully with your analysis.
I love your videos and was excited for your take on this one since I've been playing it in my bedroom for over 20 years! Your breakdowns of the parts are great and always help me to gain more appreciation of the theory behind them. As for your early question about the bass, Mark bought the Fender P bass most of the way through recording the album and ended up re-recording most of the tracks with it. This track, however, was one they decided to keep his original recording he did with the Sting Ray. Party on and keep 'em coming, dude!
Awesome video as always! Yeah, it’s the StingRay-Mark used it in a few other songs on that album, like Dumpweed and Don’t Leave Me. You can really hear how different the bass sounds.
This isn't the Enema version but one done before with the same producer of dude ranch. He used the stringray here but for enema I think he used the fender for the whole album. This song was recorded 3 times I think, this one, an early on with jerry Finn then the album version.
@Marknumskull Yeah, I know, but thanks for clarifying. Anyway, if you listen to Enema carefully, you'll notice that the bass doesn't sound the same on all tracks. For example, in the tracks I mentioned, you can hear that typical punchy and clangy Stingray tone.
@@breadsandwich336 I just watched the movie again recently and noticed that too! The garage band is identified in the credits as "Tom DeLonge, Mark Hoppus, and Scott Raynor" and then they gave Travis credit for co-writing "Mutt" when the soundtrack songs popped up! Basically the credits were reversed! Travis should have been credited for appearing in a scene and Scott should have been credited for co-writing the song.
Blink 182 was one of those bands that made me realise what bass is. The bassline from "what's my age again" is still stuck in my head after all this years. Simple but timeless! Cheers.
The early version, produced by Mark Trombino, featured Scott Raynor on drums and it sounds alright. Travis joining and the band connecting with Jerry Finn really helped solidify and tighten their sound as a trio (with Finn’s vital production making him the fourth member). Awesome insight here on one my favorite tracks by one of my all time favorite bands.

Ah, old school Blink. Good times, gooood times. I still think their self-titled is their best effort yet in terms of their musical compositions and musicianship. Probably lyrics too for the most part. It would be nice for you to do more off that album, like “Feeling This”. Great bass track on that opener for the album.
@@LowEndUniversityOh dude, their 2003 self titled is phenomenal! Please check it out next if you can. The opening track “Feeling This”, which I said you should review next, checks about all the boxes you said you look for when people make song requests. Thank You for checking this out man. Awesome. I've said it before but blink, especially Tom DeLonge, are masters of melody. Mark started playing an Ernie Ball bass, then a P Bass. Around or right after this album he had a Fender Custom with a Jazz Body and PBass neck. And the old school Big headstock. Also Travis is just a monster on drums, he drives the whole feel. This is one of my favs on the album
It plays in American Pie for maybe 10-20 seconds two separate occasions as Jim runs back and forth from his house to Kevin’s house as they are watching Nadia get undressed
Hoppus is such an underrated bassist. You hit on it early in this video; they are masters at interchanging the bass and guitar parts. Of course it also helps to have one of the greatest drummers of all time.

Mark was/is a big fan of Ned's Atomic Dustbin, especially around this time. It's the inspiration of songs like this and Always where he's playing way high up.
Funny you forgot it was in the movie, but I can’t hear it and not picture Jim running down the street trying to get to Kevin’s house to catch Nadia in the webcam. Also the scene that Blink 182 makes their cameo in
Mark Hoppus always does something melodic with his bass lines. Even his driving stuff feels sing-songy, and I mean that in the best way possible. Love the style.

Mark is such a strange bassist. Blink was notoriously bad live, Tom couldn’t sing and messed up the guitar constantly. Without Travis or Scott keeping things together with super solid and interesting drums they would’ve just fallen apart. Just recognizing you haven't reacted to a PIXIES song yet! How is that possible? Got a problem with bassist Kim Deal? Music Man StingRay, bc it was a little less "country-sounding than the Fender". Steinberger headless bass, bc it has a "weird, organ-y sound to it" Gibson Thunderbird, which she also like to play up-side-down.
Also featured on that soundtrack was a band called "The Loose Nuts". They were a ska punk band from NYC that I actually tried out for in 2002/2003ish but declined when they offered me the gig because they were starting to sound more like skate punk with horns then they were ska and I wasn't really interested in playing that style at that point. They ended up disbanding about six months later, unfortunately.
This is the part of the movie where Jim is running between his house and his friends when Nadia is in his room. I don’t blame you for being preoccupied with other things LOL. Also, you should check out the song the last drag by Nofx It might be the last song they ever put out.
I'm sure it's answered here.. but when Jim has Nadia over and is running between his house and his friends house to watch her on webcam is when this song plays 🙂
Mark mostly plays a p-bass, yes. I believe he also used to use Stingrays so you might be right there. One thing about his p-basses is he flips the position of the pickups giving the lower strings more punch and making the higher ones warmer as you said. (Edit: I'm not sure if he was doing this with his pickups yet at this point or not, but if you look up his signature p-bass you can see what I mean)
well fun fact for you if you didn't know this song was in the movie, Blink themselves are in the movie, the band with the monkey watching Jim and Nadia on the web cam

Please do Descendants - Fighting Myself. Only discovered this recently. Incredible bass line throughout the song.
They ended up disbanding about six months later, unfortunately.
their song in this soundtrack is pretty good. i don't think they're even on spotify sadly
Im in the credits for dude ranch. For remixing three of the tracks. Find me on the cds.on the fold. I worked with them many times.
Super cool!
What songs? Rad
Hej there! I would like to hear your opinion on Lagwagons Absolute Obsolete. Please. Greetz from germany
Check back Tuesday!
This is the part of the movie where Jim is running between his house and his friends when Nadia is in his room. I don’t blame you for being preoccupied with other things LOL. Also, you should check out the song the last drag by Nofx It might be the last song they ever put out.
it's when Jim has a girl over in his house to change after school and he runs to Kevin's house to watch her change on a webcam cast.
As a Patreon supporter, I’d like to throw an Andrew WK song in the running for future videos. Party party party!
I'm sure it's answered here.. but when Jim has Nadia over and is running between his house and his friends house to watch her on webcam is when this song plays 🙂
Blink made a great cameo in American Pie too
Super fun song to play actually
Mark mostly plays a p-bass, yes. I believe he also used to use Stingrays so you might be right there. One thing about his p-basses is he flips the position of the pickups giving the lower strings more punch and making the higher ones warmer as you said.
(Edit: I'm not sure if he was doing this with his pickups yet at this point or not, but if you look up his signature p-bass you can see what I mean)
Here's a video of Mark playing to fill in any of those gaps you missed in the mix :)

He recorded several songs using a Stingray, like this one.
His signature Fender bass guitar is a jaguar/precision hybrid 💖
He also had his signature p/j hybrid basses before. The ones with a jazz body & neck with an inverted p-bass pickup.
13:37 yeah, them next please
well fun fact for you if you didn't know this song was in the movie, Blink themselves are in the movie, the band with the monkey watching Jim and Nadia on the web cam
Jeff Rosenstock!! Festival Song!! :)
Great video, love hearing your blink break downs! This recording sounds like it is not the album version, if i am correct there are 3 versions: demo with Scott on drums, Enema album version but this seems to be a recording for the soundtrack with travis. I love how raw this one sounds. Great work, man!
Longtime listener first time caller, you should do Rufio “Still”
The Vibrators - Whips and Furs
