      @@MichaelBeeny Hi Mike, I have a large assortment of speakers lying around and I am now thinking of building something similar to the Edifier. I can even rat an amplifier out of an old system that I have lying around. I had totally overlooked an Edifier type system. I watched your video and the penny dropped.

      Since making this video, I have in fact found the data sheets on the chip. I thought it needed a video on the chip alone, but I have been reading all 90 odd pages a number of times and still don't understand enough to make a coherent video about it.
      Long term, I would worry about the fact that no heatsink is fitted at all. I doubt it will blow up due to power management circuitry.

    • @MichaelBeeny
      @MichaelBeeny  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Marcel. I was originally looking for a small speaker to listen too in my bedroom at night. Most sound really dreadful and really quite expensive. I thought I would build one myself but for $160NZ building myself was not worth thinking about. It is bigger than I first thought but will fit on my bedside table and it sounds reasonable.

  • @stevesmyth4982
    @stevesmyth4982 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi Mike. If you had two of these arranged as one on each channel you'd get decent separation and a loud sound given the amount of air they can move. As for amplifiers without heatsinks I'm not convinced they'll last very long.
    Good to see you're back doing stuff on your channel.

    • @MichaelBeeny
      @MichaelBeeny  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Steve, the idea was to originally buy a so-called smart speaker. Often just mono, but they sound so bloody crappy, thought this might be a better option. I think it was a good choice overall. The amplifier is class D but you know my feeling about heat and electronics. It's only for late evening use in my bedroom so should not get overheated.

Quality chassis, fun sound that filled the room, and the bluetooth system just works. No it isnt hifi, but a lot folks dont want or need hifi. 22:50 Maybe a Texas Instruments TAS5805M

  • @axelflavier
    @axelflavier ปีที่แล้ว

    Key features of the TAS5805 include: Advanced Audio Processing: It incorporates various audio processing algorithms to enhance sound quality, including dynamic range control, equalization, and speaker protection. High Output Power: The IC is capable of delivering high output power levels, typically up to several tens of watts per channel, depending on the specific implementation and speaker requirements. Digital Audio Interface: The TAS5805 features a built-in digital audio interface, allowing direct connection to digital audio sources such as audio processors, digital-to-analog converters (DACs), and digital audio interfaces..... the best part is have a damping factor or speaker protection.

    On the Back it states 300mA Power consumption. Multiplied by 240V = 70Watts! There you go: 70W Power Consumption including heat losses.... UNFORTUNATELY, the tweeters are NOT Silk Dome ones - just cheap Polypropylene. I used to work for Arvus and repaired lots of drivers and tweeters. All Arvus tweeters have the finest silk available as dome material and don't become harsh at high volume as all other do. Cheers, Carsten

    ....silk dome tweeters are NOT shiny and do NOT reflect light. Silk can have a shimmer to it, but is no mirror = would not show distinct light sources, especially when curved. In cinemas, high frequencies are cut down to not annoy the audience when loud.
    I don't like the resonance frequency around 150 Hz much and turned the video off. Thank you for all the information, great! Ca
