To think that there are 217 of these! This project is bigger than I had initially imagined. I have just done a batch of six, and they took quite a few days to do. I spent one day just doing all the thumbnails.

Lets say that I choose to go into music and there is a 10% chance I make it huge and a 90% change that I'm a starving musician that needs to wait tables to pay rent. 10% is still huge, but most likely things won't go well. On the flipside I can dedicate myself to IT or accounting and have music as a hobby. I remember once going through the interview process for a mind numbingly simple job. It was a series of three, at the second i was told by the interviewer that i had the job, the next one will just be a formality and to fill out the paperwork. The next interview was held by someone completely unknown to me, who said the last person has left the company to pursue other options.
The new guy told me i didn’t have enough experience and hired his mate. Who as it turns out, had no experience.

The only craft I've truly ever loved in life is writing stories. In high school I was doing a lot of research on global poverty, decided from a dozen or so different groups that it would cost around $60 to take someone in 'desperate poverty' and put them in an upwards spiral, at about 2b people in desperate poverty that equaled 120bn if not squandered on politics. Harry Potter had 7 novels and the franchise was worth around 28b so I figured I owed the world 30 of the greatest novels.
Obviously this is a broad strokes plan, I knew it then and I have learned a lot more since then about macro economics/ geopolitics etc. The point is that if I live a 'normal' life and do what charity I can maybe I help 10,000 people. If I have a 1/10,000 chance to end up helping 100m people then that sounds like the more braver/ honorable thing to do. If I'd become a soldier and gotten my leg blown off trying to save 10 people with a desperate plan that only had a 5% chance of ever working then I would be considered a hero. If I spend a decade on 50-60 partially completed novels that all interconnect into a Wheel of Time scale story then I'm just a lazy fool.

They rarely ever tell you the actual reason why you didn't get a job. They just make something up, that was your fault. It's easier than "We had 3 guys and had to reject 2." It would open up a discussion they don't want to have. Often it is just the economy, that gives you bad odds. Either you are lucky or you have to sit it out / further improve yourself.

The trouble is, if you are a lone wolf like Lindybeige, you either do everything all by yourself or it never happens. It's worth putting emphasis on the "in the world" part, because even if you only have a 10% chance of being one of the most successful people in the world at whatever, that is still worth considering, because that level of success is almost unimaginable. Think about it, if you were something like the 5th most successful actor in the world, literally billions of people would know who you are! You'd be famous and rich beyond your wildest dreams! If you were like the 7th or 8th or 9th most successful painter in the world, your works would sell for hundreds of millions of dollars or euros or whatever. If you were the 13th most successful politician in the world, you would literally be the 13th most powerful person on the planet! In other words, I think this is deal worth taking.

Recently I found a copy of "Save he Cat" which told me,step by step, how to assemble and pace a longer story. Last November I signed up for the National Novel Writing Month and successfully wrote the first draft of my first novel, "Goblin Princess". At 64. I wish I knew then what I knew now.
I'm currently building the outline for this years NaNoWroMo. "The Dark Lady." Love, intrigue and magical duels. I finally reached my goal, although I'd be even happier if I learn how to edit and rewrite it for publication.

'Would you devote yourself to an occupation if you knew you would be among the most successful in the world?' Er, yeah; that's the ideal with most professions, you're not aspiring to be _good enough_ at a thing, even though that's probably where you'll end up. You try to go as far as you can possibly go, and that means aspiring to the absolute best in field.
'If you knew you only had a 10% chance of being so successful, would you still put in the effort?' Again, yes. That's still just having a professional career, and entering into that career with realistic expectations. You can always _aspire_ to be the best, but you can only _plan_ to do as well as you could expect to without any good fortune or talent; good fortune cannot be planned for, and _talent_ is something that is almost impossible to self-assess, especially before it's been tested (and once it has been tested, you're well past the planning stage).

    • @LordJazzly
      @LordJazzly 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

(And before someone pulls out the 'you can make your own luck' spiel - yes, yes, alright; for 'good fortune' read 'not having all your efforts arbitrarily and pointlessly destroyed and/or undone by factors completely outside your knowledge and totally beyond your control'. Even calculated risks still carry some risk, and sometimes things pan out such that the risks all happen to eventuate, and the benefits you were weighing against them come undone by that combination of misfortunes. Arguably this can still be planned for, but planning also carries costs of its own and at some point such risk mitigation becomes more expensive than the risk itself.)

But I never got far in that project, I enrolled in a certifcation course, but I never completed it. If I could be brilliant at one thing, I would be a stock investor. Mind you, you don't need much money to start with, because if you are brilliant, you can multiply your starting amount quite quickly. The downside is that you need to consume tons of information and react immediately, so you're always engaged, it's an addictive profession.

Yes, Nicolás, I truly believe you could have been an excellent actor. I have seen you in front of the camera doing very, very interesting things. I also think television was a great fit for you, but the BBC dropped the ball in a spectacular fashion. Nevertheless, you are excellent at making videos and entertaining people while delivering positive messages on various topics and teaching good things. I send you a big greeting from our homeland, which is covered in rain today. We look forward to seeing several of the videos you haven't uploaded from Guatemala. Best regards.

go rin no sho, the book of five rings is a book that describes the way of the warrior, it does this through a methodology of explaining the similarities between building a house, and the correct manner in which to grow as a person- carpentry is an important analogue in the book and i believe carpentry to be a skill that is always worth your time. it expands your sense of dimension and proprioception, as well as your physical strength. mind and body together as one, but not so tightly knit that you become a purposeless homunculus. a carpenter never works without purpose, and has accumulated senses beyond the capabilities of the homunculus.

As for which thing I'd want to be best at...
Good lord, no idea. I've sort of had to follow things I'm at least passably good at, so - Wait, that raises a hilarious possibility. What if, in the scenario of 'definitely becoming one of the most successful in your chosen field', you don't actually get any _better_ at the skill in question? You're still just as good (or terrible) as you are right now, only everyone loves you and rates you as one of the best in your field, ever; effectively bringing the skill ceiling of your entire chosen field down to your own present level. Which is an altogether different question - do you want success in your chosen field _so_ badly that you're willing to tear it down, until it's been reduced to the point that you can reach the top with no effort?

A 10% is to be an astronaut would be my aim, however my position in the world with no networking and currently living in a shed i built and furnished isn't good enough to make the first step of studying engineering which is an investment i cannot afford for now yet alone developing connections with space agency's across the world. An astronaut is above all else an ambassador of all humanity and the toll that takes on the individual is superhuman, i dont know if under the best circumstances i could live up to that, just mentioning this would already make you an invalid candidate. Making an air transport and recovery organisation is what i will probably do given my position. Ive got a decade to generate qualifications funds and contacts while im in my peak youth and then another 30 years to make that enterprise world changing, thats a good vision to have.

You do have budget, it seems, for things like making authentic armor and such. With budget of that order of magnitude you could probably finance a few-minute narrative film with actors (or friends, film students, recruited viewers etc.) and such. And what you learn and the contacts that come from that will probably lead the way to bigger things. I mean, check out Corridor Digital and what they archieve again and again with very limited funding. And from there work your way up, because starting from almost zero to a full length movie is probably never gonna happen.

I think if it’s something you truly love, you’ll do it whether you’re successful or not. Because you can’t NOT do it. And it you pour your heart into it and become a genius at it, people will notice and success will come. But even if it doesn’t, you’ll be happy doing what you love. Maybe that’s a bit eccentric these days, but it’s what I believe.🐝❤️🤗

If I had to choose just one thing to be really really good at, it would be carpentry. Skillfully building/constructing things seems a lovely ability to have.

That is an extremely difficult question... how long would it take to become the best? Would I be considered the best after my death like some famous painters? Because then, for me, it's not worth all the trouble. I want success in my lifetime to enjoy it, and it would have to keep me in relative anonimity while making me rich, so I'd guess it would be writing or coding, as the rest just brings more fame than one could handle.
At 10% chance I would still try (and do) if it's a passion, but not for something I don't enjoy.

Private industry also do a lot of "finishing" recruiting. That is where they put out listings for jobs that they don´t full fill, then put out the same listing 2 month later, don´t full fill it, and so on, One of the reason they do that is to push up the stats for available jobs.
A other reason they sometimes close is because of some law where they would be forced to recrute a specific person, and they just didn´t like him/her and they just closed the listing in stead.
Sometimes you where the person they actuially wanted.
I have friends that was at interview and the company was like "yea sorry, we can´t fill the post at this moment, but we will recruiter again in to month, and we really recommend you to apply for that posting."
