    Great video with sound advice. It is very important to respect cold water.

    Thanks so much for sharing this and putting the emphasis on wearing the pfd. It’s like wearing a seat belt in the car, it is proven to save lives. Also great tip on the water/air temperature. Was looking for good advise on that.

    I just pulled the trigger on a drysuit rather than a farmer johns wetsuit because of this video. Thanks Tyler.

    I have to revisit this video every spring. Still dry suit time on the Willy. 👌🏻

    GREAT vid, just had this conversation with a guy new to the area. Water up here is too cold if you end up in the water. And you WILL end up in, eventually!

    Another great vid! Great advice to ALWAYS wear a PFD, regardless of water and air temperatures. Far too many tragic outcomes like the one you referenced. Love all the points you make, except I highly discourage the use of waders for kayak angling. Mainly because if you do go into the water, there is a high probability that the waders will fill with water. This can make it extremely difficult for reentry and still expose you to cold water but now being much heavier than using nothing but clothing. A cheap alternative for a drysuit is a wetsuit. It's not a great alternative though, and it might be best to avoid water and air temps below 45. Keep up the great vids!

      Interesting thing I noticed... I've only seen kayakers wearing dry suits. The paddleboarders, kitesurfers, and occasional jetskier all wear wetsuits. A good wetsuit must work fine in most cases. However, the big advantage of a drysuit is upper body movement, which is why I'm guessing most kayakers wear them. But I wonder if that's as much of a factor if you're using a foot drive...

    I use a 7mm wet suit and booties a lot less money than a dry suit but same not the most comfortable. I dive the ocean on the north coast so they work pretty good in very cold water. Now in mountain lakes in winter oh man all i have to say is hope im close to shore.....

    Yup, you need a drysuit, and a kick ass moustache 👍

    Some rivers i know around the Hoh rain forest, you will die in 1 min if you fall in, thats how cold the water is.

      Yes in fact a WDFW fish technician very recently drowned in the cold waters of an Olympic peninsula river. Cold and powerful waters are very dangerous.

    I couldn't agree with you more on the PFD. I was taught at an early age..ANY TIME your on the water you wear a PFD...NO Exceptions. and that includes wading. I got my feet sucked out from under me on the Spokane (Bowl and Pitcher)...if I wasn't wearing my PFD at the time...I wouldn't be writing this now.
    I don't have a Dry Suit yet. Though I tried a 2 piece set up when I was on the Sound and got in over my waist....though growing up on the Sound...that was BLOODY COLD. Will have a Dry Suit ..BEFORE .. I do that again.

    What would you wear under your drysuit on a sunny 70-75 day with low 50 water temps? Can I just put on light clothing that would be comfortable out of water? Will the drysuit + minimal clothing be enough to prevent cold shock?

    • @spiltmilt
      @spiltmilt  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it should. When I fish the ocean on sunny days I wear minimal layer and still manage even if I get dumped in the surf

    Hey dude I'm in PNW also do you think 5/4 hooded wetsuit and boots/gloves would be suitable for winter or would cold shock require a dry suit only thanks

    • @spiltmilt
      @spiltmilt  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Many anglers use wetsuits here in the Northwest. That should work

    I just got my first kayak and COVID has me really wanting to get out of the house and hit the water. In Western WA so the temps are still low. I have a shortcut wetsuit and hip waders but you think I'd still need a dry-suit with combined water/air temps below 120?

  • @stephensimmons5397
    @stephensimmons5397 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The 120 rule isn’t true safety u can still have the gasp reflex all the way up to 70 degrees

    Is that a Supernova semi-dry? If so, how well does it work compared to a drysuit? What if you have to make a 20 minute (or longer) swim to shore?

    You said you got sucked under in the Colombia river, what exactly happened? You still got sucked under with the pfd on? I live in west tn and want to fish some of our dark muddy rivers but theres lots of stumps that can't be seen that could easily cause a flip, the rivers move fairly slow but I'm always worried about getting pulled under somehow.

    Doesn't really matter how much safety equipment cost to me. I can't put a price on my life.
    What really gets me are the idiots that will buy a fishing yak for thousands of dollars put thousands into it, yet state dry suits are too much money! WTH!!! :/

    I’m between the supernova and doing a two piece. With the Supernova Angler being only semi dry I’m concerned with how much water gets in. Have you tested it in the water?

    • @spiltmilt
      @spiltmilt  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As long as you gave the zippers done up right it will keep 100% dry. On the few times I've dumped in the surf I've got 1 or 2 pints worth of water in around the neck which is only neoprene and thus not watertight.

    • @spiltmilt
      @spiltmilt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      How does wearing waders make you drown? Does water suddenly defy the laws of physics and get heavier inside your waders?

  • @flip2724
    @flip2724 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just be able to build a fire and get naked and have help be on the way
    edit: or just wear dry suit feel uncomfortable but dont get risk of becoming more uncomfortable
