Why is there so much hate for the replica? It's $500, not $5000 and certainly not $30,000. It still fires and it's still cool to own! The price is right IMO
@@dwdrumshdmotorcyclesvirgom7379 nah I don’t feel like having gun police knock on my door because there pissed off im shooting at something in the middle of nowhere.
Bakelite under the barrel allows to hook the gun in the armored vehicle firing port, and prevents the muzzle from backing into the vehicle during firing and bullets ricocheting inside.
Despite being from the 40's the original MP40 seems to be made to a higher standard of manufacture. That being said, I'm still very happy that ATI is bringing in 9mm MP40s!
The MP40 was actually a cheapened version of the MP38 because the MP38 was a milled receiver and expensive to make. The MP40 was essentially the cheap version with mostly stamped parts to consume less raw materials and speed up production.
Almost all Machine Pistols (MP) or its later brethren sub-machine guns are stamped, they're designed to be produced quickly and cheaply, this is why the US military no longer uses them, last one was the M3. The M3 or known in the military as the grease gun, was a flop! Started production in 1942,issued to tankers some paratroopers, staff and artillery units. Because of its stamped production, using plastic parts in some cases it was prone to literally falling apart when fired because it's an inertia cyclic weapon. But hey, they looked, cool! en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/M3_submachine_gun
I dunno, look at how poor the machining is on the bottom of the upper on the original. Other than the recoil spring assembly, the clone looks higher quality and generally improves on the original while keeping the aesthetics 99% intact.
I got mine and I LOVE it, no issues great shooter, read a lot about things vibrating out no issues, just lock tight the usual things, like screws that hole the black plastic down, put around 200 rnds through it without a cleaning and no failures, the bar that connects the trigger is a bit mushy under the ejection side plastic bit, but Atlantic wall blanks sells a good stainless steel replacement, or if you're feeling frisky you can make your own, all in all great gun, I hope some one makes Bakelite replacements for the black polymer some day!
I saw another video on replacing the trigger bar like the one Atlantic Wall sells. So I decided to make my own I will attach a photo if possible. Not having the oval slot in the front takes a lot of play/sloppiness out of the trigger.
Cory R Understood, but this is completely different. The disassembly, the safety, the magazine incompadibilty. It doesn't even hold 32 which I thought was a trademark of this gun. The hi-visbility night sights, cheap pot metal...wtf. An abomination I tell you!
Great video! I got one coming in. Years back while with a WW-II SS reenactment group, one of our members had the real thing and I got the chance to fire it full auto with live rounds, it was a beautiful weapon. The GSG MP4- I'm buying will just be for plinking at the range and not for hunting/home defense as I have several AR's and more various weapons for that purpose.
Thank you. I just received an ATI GSG MP 40 for my birthday. Since I don't have several thousand dollars for an orginal, my wife bought me the ATI. Still scrathes my old weapon itch.
I was on a waiting list for one of these back in March with my dealer, but something odd happened where ATI ran out of stock or my dealer got lost on the list or something of a combo of the two. I'm a bit salty about it, because I was going to be cut a good deal on it.
I'd love to get one if these, but the exposed recoil spring just kinda kills it. It makes it look cheap or like a BB or airsoft gun. They should have at least blued the spring or telescoped it like the original. Damn, so close in appearance but falls just a bit short for the money.
Our guns laws are ridiculous, it legal to have a bump fire stock turning your SKS into full automatic but not a swing out metal stock for your semi-automatic GSG MP40.
Only Germans can make a weapon so close to the original yet make it completely non interchangeable. That's skill these may be cheap replicas but to make it look so close is a big win in my book . I bought one and I can wait to fire the one I ordered . Is the charging handle in the original removable
Original mp40 is my dream gun. The reproduction is more of a range toy than a serious practical choice! Plenty of more practical choices in both pistols and carbines to choose from. But nothing wrong with buying a gun for fun or purchasing an almost identical replica of your dream gun that you could never practically own!
That's an interesting theory, I haven't thought of that. My thinking was, that since MP40s were primarily made for tank crews, the thread was for portholes, just like on Russian BMPs. I recall, Germans were toying with the concept of periscopic gun adapter for shooting out of the hatch, but the adapters I've seen were primarily for Stg 44.

Is it possible to purchase a mp40 parts kit and have it turned into a semi auto short barreled rifle? The ati one looks close but not close enough in my opinion?! Not saying I won't get one from ati for plinking but your original blows that repro out of the water!!!!!!!!
Yea, you can never beat the original... But an original MP40 is in the neighborhood of $20,000 whereas the ATI is about $650... Yes, you can build a semi-auto out of a parts kit. However, complete MP40 parts kits will cost you around $1,000-$2,000. The kit will also come without a receiver tube, so you will need to fabricate your own, or pay someone to make one for you. Then, it will need to be converted to a closed bolt, hammer fired firearm, which again, will require you know how to do it or will need to pay someone to do it for you. There was a company that made semi-auto MP40's out of parts kits, which were imported in the 90's. Very few made it into the country before they were banned from importation. About 7 years ago I saw one on Gunbroker and it sold for about $5,000... Thanks for watching!
That sear is basically the same as a ppsh-41 open bolt machine gun. The only purpose of the trigger is to move the stub out of the way for the travel of the bolt! Thanks Chris!

Where can I get a parts kit?
In other words unless you are a really good machinist its beyond 99.9% of most people's ability.
LuvBorderCollies you can find an sot 07/02 gunsmith and he should be able to build it into a semi auto.

I would love to have that gun
Very intersting review. My GSG 9mm isn't a real mp40 but is great fun
Are open bolt systems illegal in your state ?
Sorry i am from europe ;)
They're illegal on a federal level here. The NFA said they're too easy to convert to machine guns so now everything has to be closed bolt.
how much are magazines?
dubvc1 34 to 40 bucks depending where you get them
That sear is basically the same as a ppsh-41 open bolt machine gun. The only purpose of the trigger is to move the stub out of the way for the travel of the bolt! Thanks Chris!
They had a bunch of ww2 reproductions at my local gun show. They all looked and felt like the real deal, the only issue is they were all 22's
Nothing like a real mp40
Excellent video sir, very detailed!
GREAT DEMO!
why does this MP40 GSG have no shoulder rest?
It's classified as a pistol because of barrel length. Registered pistols can't have a stock.
do the magazines interchange? ..
No..
