- We have been advocaters of the free rig for quite a while due to its fish catching abilities. Today, we travel out to one of the Great Lakes and test it out on some big pre-spawn Smallmouth bass!

I'll have to give this a shot, try out some baby rage bugs or 2.8 keitechs/3" spark shads with a 1/0.

I’m gunna have to try that Ben! I was smashing them on a 3” easy shiner or 3.3 fat on an underspin been noticing the bass went back deep and feeding on the bottom.
Definitely worth trying! It’s my go to bottom contact technique!

How is a free rig different than a texas rig without the weight pegged? is it because you use a pencil or tear drop weight instead of a worm or flipping weight?
Can you explain the differences of using the nrx 852s compared to the windbuster in a free rig situation?
852 is more of a traditional fast taper, and a little lighter powered and a little more sensitive than the Windbuster. The Windbuster bends a little more gradually through the mid section. It's really a personal preference thing. I just like the feel of the Windbuster.

I’ve always noticed drop shots out fishing free rigs because you can change up your leader to make it the perfect length but smallies might react differently than spots
Probably has to do with bait size as well. Small nose hooked bait often gets more bites than a beaver
@@jamesh7469 I’m not even sure about that, just personal experience fishing right next to people using free rigs I think that drop shots out fish them. I’m on a different fishery(ies) so that changes things though.
@@morganyoder4277 I mean it's on spinning gear. I run like a 20 foot leader on most of my spinning rigs because I don't care if the knot is in the spool or not, like I do on a baitcaster. It's the bait size and style that's making the difference. You can get a small size 3 or 4 EWG and run a swing impact or some other minnow style bait on a free rig, and it'd probably produce as much as a drop shot and be less annoying.
@@twiggsherman3641 I fish a lot of grass but in areas without it a free rig would certainly cause less of a hassle, maybe I’ll have to do some individual testing and see what I can figure out.
@@morganyoder4277 a free rig is going to be about as much hassle in grass as a texas rig, if ya use the cylinder style weights. I'd be more concerned about tangling up a drop shot in grass, then a free rig.
