The thing about Dickson is that, to the end, he’s deceptive. First he pretends to be your friend, when really he’s just doing it for Zanza. Then he pretends not to care about you... but that’s not truthful either, because not only is he afraid of Shulk, he’s PROUD of him. Even his relationship with Dunban wasn’t entirely faked, as it would have been only too easy for Dickson to just let him die and remove another ally for Shulk. Instead, one of the first things we see Dickson do is save Dunban’s life. Dickson is really a pretty tragic character. He was just a fighter. He was a cunning liar, with no scruples and few morals... but he still held enough love to respect those he was entrusted.
People overlook the fact that Dickson mutters to himself, under his breath where no one can hear him, “I kinda feel bad lying to that kid” in Satori Marsh
@@JacobNintendoNerd99 I really wish they didn't put that line into the game. It's such blatantly obvious foreshadowing, and the only reason you wouldn't expect Dickson to eventually betray you somehow afterwards is if you forget he says that. In my opinion, the rest of his foreshadowing is much more well done than him being so blatantly obvious about it.
@@michaelmcdonald2005 Not really. That line could’ve meant any number of things, including the fact that Dickson said he was heading back to colony 9, when he actually went to Alcamoth, hence, a deception. Nobody saw Dickson’s betrayal coming until much later, in chapter 15. There’s nothing about that chapter 6 line, in context, that says “I’m definitely going to betray these people.”
@@maxrichards3881 When I first played the game that line stuck out like a sore thumb. I thought it was out of character for him and I immediately became suspicious. At least for that moment. I didn't think much of it later on but it was always at the back of my head until the reveal.
SPOILERS I think my favorite thing about this game is Dickson's death because of the conflicting emotions during it. After his betrayal, he reveals he never cared for Shulk or Dunban, he has no redeeming traits at all, and he's essentially a complete monster at that point. By all means, you should enjoy kicking his ass for what he did. I was looking forward to it on my first playthrough. But when you do kill him, it's not satisfying. There's no powerful final blow like Mumkhar getting impaled or Xord exploding, yet he's not like Egil where you can argue he's not that bad a person. His fight is pretty easy, even compared to those in Prison Island itself, so it's not especially fun to defeat him. When he's killed, the music is sad, as if he were performing some heroic sacrifice as opposed to just angrily giving up like he does. Dickson is an awful monster of a person, who wanted to see Mechonis destroyed, shot Shulk in the back, and lied to everyone for YEARS just to get power. By all means, killing him should feel as good, if not better, than doing so to Mumkhar or Lorithia - but it doesn't. It's such an amazing way to sum up who he is: he's such an emotionally manipulative and scummy piece of trash that he won't even let YOU, the player, feel good about killing him.
SPOILERS Though it's just as much of an insight on Shulk in this particular scene. This is shulk's feelings put into song. He is sad that things have turned out like this, somber in the notion and decision what he is about willingly cut down, out of his life: Dickson, the man who raised him and was basically his father. But for the sake the world, he has to hurt him, kill him if he must, for everyone else's survival. He has to push down his emotions and attachment to dickson if he has any chance to stop him. The burden is a heavy one; worse, it was something Dickson could not be talked out of or guilt tripped into changing his mind.
*SPOILER WARNING* To think of the tragic moments and twists that were paired with this song. I could be wrong about some of these, but the Fiora twist, Dickson and Zanza revealing themselves, the High Entia transforming into Telethia. Damn the end of this game was crazy.

But after getting to know what actually happened when you’re in Agniratha, you get a complete different view on the plot. After defeating Egil, it completely twisted into another direction with the true revealing of Zanza and therefore Dickson, Alvis and Lorithia. The emotions and relationships among the party got extremely special and it felt so satisfying to see all this and finally understanding the true power of the Monado and the whole plot. This games story got better and better, as the game progressed and the ending is truly wonderful. What a game

One thing that always kinda bothered me about this story that I otherwise love, is Dickson’s turn. Of course, there was foreshadowing, but it always just felt a bit off to me. He goes from a caring-uncle type to a complete mustache-twirling villain so quickly. That said, I think it kind of makes his death so poignant. It’s not really satisfying, you’re not really happy to have beaten him. Killing him is just incidental to get to Zanza. The fact that he DOES turn so evil so quickly is maybe part of what makes his death good. You’re just like “man, what the fuck”. Why did this have to happen.
He doesn't... if you replay the game, knowing what he is... then you see all the throwaway comments he makes throughout his appearances that heavily foreshadow his actions. He's throwing out hints throughout the game that he wasn't what you thought he was, but then it also makes his betrayal all the more shocking when you get there the first time... you thought he was someone you can rely on. Waraila wildrunner well that’s not really what I said, is it? I acknowledged that there’s foreshadowing. The one in Satorl marsh in particular is actually a little uncomfortably obvious in my opinion. It’s just that it doesn’t really make sense. Him being on the side of the bad guys is fine, but the way his personality does a 180 isn’t, really. Once he shoots shulk, he’s not even a sympathetic villain. He’s just an annoying asshole. Like I said, he feels like a mustache-twirling cartoon villain from the 60’s. There’s nothing redeeming about him. It just doesn’t fall in line with how he acted the rest of the game, and it doesn’t make him an interesting character. “Good Guy is now bad for... reasons”. You never really see him regret his actions, he only seems vaguely sad when he dies, it just feels awkward. It’s super easy from a storytelling perspective to just say “oh look, this guy is evil now!” and have the personality do a complete 180. It’s not amazing writing, and it always felt like a copout to me. I’m okay with the idea of Dickson being evil but I don’t like how it was handled.
