    Vote for O’Rourke as Most Underrated Bass Player Ever. Lines, tones, slickness, phrasing. He had it.

      @georgetzimas1541 3 ปีที่แล้ว +39

      I think that the problem with Andy was that he was overshadowed by the divine Johnny. I mean Johnny's riffs left no room for bass lines to be appreciated, it is as simple as this. They dominated the melodic line of the song. Andy was great, no question about this. Tight, precise, phrase perfect and everything, but when you play alongside a guy like Marr, you are pretty buggered.

      And Gannon's rythmic guitar's also underrated. It filled perfectly the band's voids and added sonic scenario for the band to boost.

    • @reggiekrager5411
      @reggiekrager5411 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Smiths were not New Romantic. Quite the contrary, they were in complete opposition to that entire movement and the hedonism, materialism and hard partying ways it espoused, and saw it as a product of the moral decay of the Thatcher era. Morrissey even said in his book that there was nothing in the world that he would have hated more than to be associated with the sound and image of bands like Duran Duran or Wham. Robert Smith of the Cure also said he always saw Duran Duran as some sort of musical arch-enemy, a representation of everything that was wrong with music and society in the 80s, and of everything they were NOT supposed to be. The Smiths also came way too late to have been New Romantics anyway, The New Romantics were mostly late 70s later-wave Punk bands who had morphed into New Wave or Synthpop by the early 80s, and generally already had some hits in the charts by 1981-82, The Smiths were just forming in 1982-83 and started to make their presence seriously felt around 1984. 1980 would have been around the latest date of formation that could have qualified The Smiths as New Romantic. The New Romantics were the bands and musicians that were all over Live Aid in 1985,while Morrissey was very openly critical and suspicious of the Live Aid concerts and those participating in them. Depeche Mode were oftenly lumped in with the New Romantics back in the day due to them coming out around the same time, but the members of DM fiercely rejected the label and claimed (correctly) that they had very little in common with the New Romantics, both in terms of aesthetics and in sound and how they make their music. New Romantics are generally characterized by a very image-focused, very fashion-conscious approach, a very extravagant dress sense, oftenly wearing clothes inspired by the late 18th-early 19th century (which is what brought them their name), very slick hair, in many cases even makeup etc. generally very focused on image. New Romantic music is generally very poppy and radio friendly, with very basic themes of love, breakups, getting chicks, partying, having a good time etc.. The New Romantics were at the forefront of the music video era, and made up a big part of what was known as the "Second British invasion" of the United States caused by the advent of MTV. Music videos, and by extension, their image, had a very important, central role to these bands. Meanwhile The Smiths, especially early on, were very staunchly anti-video, and Morrissey even talked oftenly in interviews back then about his hopes that The Smiths would be the band to lead the movement to bring down music videos and MTV. The music video for "How Soon is Now" was done by their label without the band's approval, and when they saw it, they tried to have it pulled but their label wouldn't have any of it. Regardless, as they progressed in their career The Smiths did reluctantly agree to make some music videos for some of their singles, but when they did do them they did them very differently from most mainstream stuff on MTV. Compare the video for "Stop me if you think you've heard this one before" or "Ask", to Duran Duran's video for "Rio" for example. The Smiths preferred more basic videos, that fit the band's working class Manchester aesthetic and Morrissey's taste for classic cinema, meanwhile New Romantics preferred elaborate, very expensive productions, oftenly filming videos on million-dollar yachts, ballrooms or other such places (which was further grounds for accusations that they promoted materialism and a hedonistic lifestyle). New Romantic bands generally stayed away from politics, both in their music and in their off-stage statements, or if they did talk about politics they generally had very "safe" political views that wouldn't start any kind of controversy. The Smiths meanwhile embraced radical politics and controversy full on, including in their music, being very openly against Thatcher, The Royal Family, the meat industry and a great deal of other stuff. Also, another difference I guess, is that New Romantics generally leaned towards a more synth-based sound, and used more synths in their music, and while that wasn't exclusive to the New Romantics in that period (once again see Depeche Mode, the farthest thing from a New Romantic band), bands like the Smiths were in complete opposition to synths and synthpop, and in favour of more traditional guitars and bass guitars, while still kinda trying to emulate the synth sound with the instruments at their disposal. A lot of critics referred to The Smiths as "synthpop without the synths", they managed to replicate that synthy sound very good without using any actual synths. Now, the logical question arises, if the Smiths aren't New Romantic then what are they? Well, I don't know really. Johnny Marr himself talked in an interview about the fact that there never really was any specific name for the "wave" and scene that The Smiths were part of, so he just identified himself as Post-Punk or New Wave, despite not having much in common with the earlier New Wave/Post-Punk bands. I guess you can call them Indie, Alternative Rock, Post-Punk or New Wave depending on how you prefer. But really, The Smiths were just their own very special thing and sound, very hard to classify or pigeonhole into any specific category (which is what they wanted themselves from the beginning), and so is The Cure and other such bands, they're just categories and leagues of their own.

      Johnny really didn't start playing on a Jag until the mid-2000s with The Cribs. With The Smiths, he's most known for using a Rickenbacker 330, that red Les Paul, Gibson 335 and 355. His signature Jag isn't even 10 years old.
