Chad, you suggest zero drop shoes, but in another JMT video you said gaiters are a must on JMT. It looks to me like most gaiters need that gap in the arch region for the connecting strap. What shoe/gaiter combination do you use?
On training with the zero drop shoes- did you wear them only while training or did you wear them in place of regular tennis shoes all of the time? I bought a pair of altras last fall and began hiking with them, but I am still wearing just normal shoes to work, and errands etc. I am wondering if that is decreasing my ability to acclimate to the zero drops...? I want to be sure it is not going to mess with my achilles/tendons before I do a major hike in them & would like to train for at least a year. Any insight would be great- thank you!
That’s a great question and yup, I used them the all the time My entire line of shoes are Altras now because of the zero drop - normal, running, hiking. IMO, I think you’re right in being concerned that it could mess with your tendons if you aren’t using them regularly, then suddenly bang out 200 some odd miles in them! It took me two weeks to fully get used to my first pair when I was wearing them everyday!
@@ChadLubinski I just bought my first pair. How far in advance did you have your pair before JMT? My shoes tend to last a long time but I've only worm salomons.
@@nohemy84 awesome!! I had them for a while before the JMT but only wore them when I was hiking because I didn’t want to break them down by putting too many miles on them!
Yep Altras were a game changer for me. Thanks for the tips!
Right?! You bet 👍🏻👍🏻
How often did you walk/trail run a week and how far in advance did you start? Great video thank you.
Thank you!! I don’t think you can ever start TOO early but I started about 4 months out for the running, probably 2.5 months out for the walking

Hey Bill! I use the Altra TIMPs with the Altra gaiters. The shoes come made to fit them easily!
@@ChadLubinski thanks. We'll check them out.

Perfect! Looks like I will have to convert my everyday shoes as well 😅 Thank you for the info!
