You have been the biggest impact on my straight razor experience. I have now gotten the the point where people ask me to hone razor for them. Thanks for all you do for the community!
really looking forward to watching this! I'm Gareth from the UK who sent you the Fili 14! thanks so much Dr Matt for putting a video up! - Just finished watching, awesome video, am sure I'll love your edge. Everything I've learned about putting an edge on an "ebay find" is learnt from this channel! keep up the good work! Maybe my face prep or something else was off on the day I test shaved it
I am fortunate enough to have two 14's. Both of them are the older ones with no stamp on the Tang. Love them both! By far the best shaving razors that I have.
yes sir i do like the philly quality razors mate and do give a great shave . have to say i do like a heaver grid myself some of them old wedges are amazing for sure . and the steel is sublime to work with 👍
I actually just had a couple of ebay razors I honed and had the same issue with the toe. Been bevel resetting from the Norton 4k on forward to avoid removing too much steel on the spine instead of the on 1k. (I'm a little bit of an admitted over honer but I get nice even symmetric spine wear and bevels when correcting geometry.) The striations were different on the very tip 1/16 to 1/8 of the toe between the 4k and the 8k polisher. One especially on a Dobl Duck. It wouldnt touch down. Made sure all hones were lapped, leveled, and clear of swarf. Tried the roll and pull x stroke and that last 1/16 I just couldn't get that bevel polished to 12k. Tried more pressure on the toe. Nope. Said the hell with it. Other than that?...Razors have significantly progressed in keenness and sharpness thanks to Dr. Matt, Badger and Blade. Slash McCoy, Science of Sharp, and Guide to Wet Shaving, but I'm still chasing that "shavette feather" edge. I've done up about 25 restorations, polish, geometry correction if needed, bevel set, hone and strop from start to finish going from either Norton 1k, or 4k depending, Norton 8k, Naniwa 12k, ILR Ultra Premium until sticky, strop, back on, then .25 micron diamond on lapped balsa vertically. Then denim strop with Mothers Mag polish, Illinois 827 linen and Russian leather, then fire hose strop and leather on La Rocca Latigo. I even took a $14 Union Chinese razor down that was shaving mediocre to poor, and reset that spine and bevel. (I think they just put a bevel on those cheap Chinese razors by trail leading with a belt sander because there is no spine wear on them.) Athough it's much better now, there is room for improvement Fairly satisfied with the edges, but I'm still looking for that "effortless glide." I would love to get my hands on a Fili!
Hey Doc, I recently got a wade & butcher full wedge, the guy who restored it said it was shave ready, it wasn't, tugging and pulling like a mf. So after much research I stumbled upon your video on geometry, where you hone a vintage sheffield, say no more. My W&B had geometry issues, I fixed it accordingly and honed it through a 1k-4k-8k-12k progression. Result? The best shaver I own (amongst 7 razors), it literally melts my beard. Thick, coarse beard, which I shave every 4-6 days, so lots of growth. Still, means nothing to the cleaver. Thank you for sharing. Kind regards from Brazil.
I believe the Especial's were made earlier and series 1 . The Sub Cero is later I believe with lyre in gold foil on the scales . Sub zero quench is debatable? All my Filly14's shave incredibly well ,no matter the choice of edge .
Hey Doc?....Are you going to start doing "Ferris Bueler's Day Off....Are you still here? Go home!...Nah...F#ck that!" style outtakes from now on?....😂😂😂
I do this …almost by accident can this affect my edge in a certain process? In my thinking I’ve thought to only use the process of lifting it up only on smiling wade and butchers per your video on your smiling wade and butcher

The best is straight razor from SOLINGEN ,
IIIREICH ,before 1939.🤗😎😊
The old German steel is definitely better than the new stuff!
