    Jaqueline, the Mexican petunia, although contained, can still hybridize with the native petunias and thus altering the genetic make up of native petunias. It is best to get rid of it and replace it with native petunias. But I agree, it is a pretty plant.

    Thanks for the content. You may want to consider a non-native sweet almond bush (Aloysia Virgata-South America). They grow about 6 foot wide and well over 8 feet high without pruning. They produce many small white flowers on the ends that smell like fabric softener. Some say the smell is vanilla and almond. The wasps, native bees, butterflies and other pollinators love them. This is their second year in the yard and I haven't had any issues with pickle worms or cucumber beetles on the few cucumber plants I have near them probably because of the wasps.
    In North Florida they are deciduous and cold sets them back like it does our native firebush, but I just do heavy pruning on the four I have. It tolerates heavy pruning and they recommend 3-4 times a season between blooms so that it doesn't get taller. Jasmine and gardenias smell better, but the sweet almond bush does so well in my backyard that gets full sun. We only have one firebush, but I plan on adding at least one more in the future. The firebushes are so beautiful and the hummingbirds love them.

    Fun! Thanks for sharing. You asked about gallardias (blanket flower). Personally I dead head mine until the leaves start to fry and then I let them go to seed. It's the only flower that I deadhead regularly because they do bloom better. Love threatening fruit trees. My dad was talking to a guy under a non-producing mango tree and he suggested pounding an iron stake into the tree. Flowers started appearing the next day (just from the threat). Your fire bushes look AMAZING!!! Mine are 2 years old and one is really struggling. I don't see any gray-leaf tea bushes. I don't know how they would do in your area, but mine are a happy buzzin bee buffet. Love how the vines share space. I was worried about mine cohabitating until I saw how happy yours are. TY!

    My Everglades in a pot died too.... right after I pulled a ginormous plant out of my raised beds... I was relying on the potted plant to give me tomatoes and now I have to start all over again. 🤣 I have had no pollination going on with my white beauty eggplants. I've been hand pollinating to no avail. Meanwhile, right nearby I have ants swarming over the Thai beans, the sunflowers, the pattypan squash.... everything else is getting pollinated somehow.

      @@WildFloridian mine do surprisingly well in part sun (about 4-5 hours dappled). I actually found them at lowes this year but in the past I got mine from FloridaHillNursery online. These things are soooo resilient. I had a prime ark blackberry that died so quick but both of my sweetie pies are still here and doing so good. This variety fruits on 2nd year canes and these are literally the only brambles I’ve been able to grow. I think you’ll like these! 😃

    Talk about hard to garden? Here in Fort White the deer, rabbits, possums, coons, bugs and heat make it real tough. I just had to put up an 8 foot fence system around my home and garden area. Putting up an 8 foot fence around the whole 1 1/2 acres is too costly, so I rigged a cheap fence with 8 foot wildlife netting and nylon rope with T posts. It seems to be working pretty good. I used already over 600 feet of the netting. Deer don't like netting. It seems to be working pretty good at a fraction of the cost of a steel wire or chain link fence. I am hoping my fall and winter gardening is more successful now that I have some barrier against the deer that run this neighborhood like a local mascot or something.

    • @WildFloridian
      @WildFloridian  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Jimmy, you are a country man! 1.5 acres! I know we love wildlife... but not when they eat the veggies. That is some ingenuity!

      @@WildFloridian The dang rabbit munched on my peanut patch and the deer ate up my pumpkins and lots of veggies. I knew I would lose a lot of it but I just had to try something and see what grows good here. I did pull off some garden corn, some Indian corn, some tomatoes, mustard greens and radishes, so they did not eat everything.
      I sprayed the rabbit with my hose one day and he came back that night and ate all my peanut plants down. He has an attitude.

I just got 2 greenstalks so I can grow some more cubanelles because my plant is not happy where is at. I think my plantain might bloom before the end of the year, so thanks for the advice on fertilizing it. My okra was doing great and I harvested enough for 3 dinners but then out of the blue the plant turned yellow overnight and started dropping the blooms it had and just looked awful. I trimmed it down to some green growth on the bottom and am waiting to see what happens. Also, I don't know what is wrong with my tomatillo. It looks like it has powdery mildew. Any thoughts on what to do?. I have sprayed it with Monterrey Complete disease control and am hoping for the best. My previous plant was full of tomatillos and it just died. Thanks for any advice you can give me.

      Thank you Sandra! Awww man... darn it... I was hopeful. I'm so glad your ajise is doing well. My established ajise is doing well. I think I need to start some seeds in a shadier location before moving them into such direct sun. Yay! I'm so happy that you are going to get some plantains. That is interesting about the okra. I don't know what would cause that. Is your tomatillo off the ground and prunes to get some air flow? Pest pressure is really up... so some things may be succumbing to pests. Also depending on the amount of sun. Sun intensity kills off many breeds of veggies during the summer unless they are bred for our area. Just guesses here.

      @@WildFloridian I did, then I got some goats. Goats will eat it to the ground. Here in lee County they plant it in the median. You should look into it before you plant it. It runs like crazy.

    Im a newbie gardener, and our yard has been swallowed by Virginia creeper and poison ivy, and I’m not sure where to even begin. We don’t use chemicals at all, and we are being taken over. This stuff is worse than kudzu (which our woodchucks love).
    I’ve no idea where to start. And when I say it’s taken over, I mean it’s covered the yard.
    My husband doesn’t care about the yard, but I do, and since I have SLE I have to be very careful about sun exposure… which means I need a game plan that will get the job done quickly.
    I need advice.

    Are you think of extending out your planting to the street? That’s prime planting are that that grass is taking up. Sunshine mimosa? Perennial peanut? Yellow top? More beach sunflower? ☀️

      That's the plan! Ben and I have been having lots of chats about what is going to happen with the grass up front and the back yard. It may even be more than a ground cover... more wildflowers... native grasses like Muhly... we are even talking about how we are going to add some pines back into the yard.

    Hi, I know this was posted last summer, but boy am I feeling this video! The heat wave outside this year is intense and it's only June. I've been meaning to ask you if you could recommend native plants to plant under the canopy of a a Florida Oak tree. I'm from South Florida (Kendall area) and I have a 25-20 yr old Oak tree in the front between the street and sidewalk area and it looks very lonely. Any suggestions? Thank you. :)

    Hi I'm in SE FLORIDA, QUESTION: At what point are the Dwarf Cavendish BANANAS ready to pick the stock. My 1st time. There are about 6 bunches and they are about 3-6 inches. And do I have to move the pups? TIA 😊

      LOL... I didn't. But I looked it up... just for you 😄 It is passiflora multiflora or multiflorus. I saw it listed both ways. Apparently it is endangered.

      Yes Dune sunflower is a native ground cover. Usually found on the shorelines. Most native nurseries carry it.

      I bought the seed packets at Lowes. It’s by Bonnie seeds, I think, so you may find the seeds at Home Depot or Target or I think you can buy direct online

    You have people come in and do your landscaping???

    • @WildFloridian
      @WildFloridian  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yep. They mow the lawn and edge the sidewalks and driveway (this is how they killed some wildflowers.... they went too deep from the grass). They also trim the hedges in the back yard. They don't touch the food forest, wildflowers, vegetables, or florida native plant landscaping areas. Once in a blue moon... they get a new guy... and then they chop up something or pull a new plant.

      @@WildFloridian I had people come in and landscaping companies and had the same problem. Then they didn't want to come back because it's a couple of acres.
