What you need is a 40v ryobi expand-it tool it. It’s one too but has a bunch of attachments like a hedge trimmer, Weed eater, edger, pole saw. If you go into a direct tools they can show you and explain in more detail. It’s much cheaper getting it there as they sell factory recondition tools that are just as good as new.👍👍

That’s what my St Pete back yard looks like also. St Augustine requires regular treatment. So, my front is nice, back is a hot mess. But that’s where the garden stuff is and where my dogs play. For the muck on the fence, hose it down and then either take a soapy brush and scrub (it should come off easily) or for smaller railings/lighter muck, just take a wet magic eraser and rub it down, then hose clean.

I LOVE your sweater! And I want French garden meets Marie Selby meets Disney meets volleyball court meets grove backyard 😜🤪.
You can cut down the cordyline very close to the ground; it will resprout with multiple branches for a shorter, fuller look. That would take care of the living room.
Cathy swears by her Ryobi brushless equipment.
We still have the landscaping company so we don't use weed whackers, edgers or mowers. However, I got a small multi-heads trimmer for quick shrub touch ups that Santa gave me a couple of years ago.
What I do use a lot is my auger. Jo got me the Hitachi (Metabo now) cordless drill and I am in love with it. Made the 76 plants planting much quicker.

Who knew? Wild Floridian Anglophile! A Subtropical Cottage garden! It will be the new rage.
Not pushing a particular brand, but you should really look at the battery powered combo tools. Lithium battery technology has come such a long way, so they last way longer than they used to, do heavier duty work, and tend to be quieter and lighter overall. And, the freedom to roam a large yard without dragging a cord around! This should be purchased at the Big Orange or Big Blue box store so you can try it out before settling, cause with tools, the balance in your hands make a great difference on the fatigue you feel. Then get a couple of extra batteries, so you can keep the extras charged up, and finish longer jobs in one push, instead of stopping to recharge.
Looking forward to the exciting changes!

Here's to an exciting new year I like the transformation ideas. My tool suggestion is Ryobi carries a large selection of battery operated garden tools such as hedge trimmers, small chain saw and other items perfect for the home owner. If you want to go professional I would suggest Stihl products. Ryobi runs on a interchangeable battery that stays charged and recharges using one station. This was a game changer for me before Ryobi came out with this line l had gas powered tools hard to maintain and loud. Let the clean up begin!

When you empty the beds under the windows in the back yard consider not planting anything there. Extend hardscape to house. Gives you negative space that rests the eye as you look out to the cottage garden area. Maybe a fountain in front of one of the windows. Love your videos and the vlogmas was great.

Sounds like you need a battery powered reciprocating saw, AKA "Sawzall". As the name "Sawzall" suggests, it's extremely versatile and would work great for those palm fronds because it's great at cutting from awkward angles and tight spaces. Another comment mentioned that it's very easy to maintain and can cut in the dirt. It's also a much safer tool compared to a chainsaw or circular saw. If you do decide to get a reciprocating saw, don't go too cheap, you get what you pay for when it comes to this tool. What I mean is I don't recommend buying one from Walmart or harbor freight, don't buy Black & Decker, Ryobi, or Kobalt imo. Some quality brands are Makita, Ridgid (lifetime warranty), Milwaukee, DeWalt, Bosch, etc.

A little pool chlorine mixed with water for the fence it's the standard softwash mix most pros use for mold down here. Hand tools for pruning Corona and Fisker are solid bets at the big box store. If you want power tools go with Stihl they offer a battery line. They are expensive but they will last forever if taken care of and you have a ton of dealers in the area for them. The date palm along the sidewalk could be pruned back and still not be in the way. Your list of ideas sounds like a ton of work but this is the best time of year for big projects like your thinking before the heat kicks on. Your neighbors fence definitely was installed wrong I'd switch to vinyl if possible maybe go 50:50 on it to sway thier mind. If you cut that St. Augistine to 4" and cut twice a week during the growing season that yard would snap back with little to no inputs. Spreading compost across your yard once a year would likely give it all it needs. You had so many ideas it's hard to keep track of everything you mentioned lol. Hope you have a successful season I know I'm excited for my garden this year. 😀

Always love your videos, they getting me thinking!! I really need to look at my tree canopies because there is just too much shade in the spaces I want to grow!!
I started a pollinator garden last year that I want to have at least 95% of it being all natives.

I think you'd get solid use out of a Sawzall, technically called a reciporicating saw, for your projects.
Any major tool company would have multiple tools that can run with the same battery. I've been using a Craftsman one for years for many uses, including pruning palms and removing root balls. You could find one that also mates with a hedge trimmer and you're all set!

Gate needs to be pressure washed. Ryobi makes a small, handheld, inexpensive version (18V battery - EZ Clean) that you can use with a 5 gallon bucket. They have others that are more powerful above and beyond that, which are less likely to clog over time. Some are corded, some are cordless. If y'all are in a different system (Milwaukee, DeWalt etc), there may be options there as well.

telco pruners are so worth the money if you don’t already have them. I hand prune everything because hedge trimmers just freak me out (too much like a chainsaw), and my felcos cut through quite a bit. I’ve done hard trims on rose bushes and severely overgrown choke cherries, honeysuckle, etc., and can do it quickly with those. I have larger pruners (not felco) I use for thicker branches, but am looking to get a battery operated reciprocating saw after I move to replace that and the hand saws. I recently got a dewalt drill to replace another major brand one that died, and like it so much I’ll probably stick w the dewalt brand for the saw.
On the removal of larger shrubs- you might want to hire someone to assist with that as it’s extremely difficult to do by hand. Admittedly I’ve only done it in solid (literally make a pot with it) clay soil, and it’s probably easier in most FL soil.
Thank you for all the great info - your vids are extremely helpful to applying the information.

I have an electric "Chain Saw on a Stick." I am a little single lady who has to do it all myself, and I found this device to be very convenient. And if I don't need the Stick part, I can easily remove it and have a handy little chain saw. I also have a large 14 inch electric chain saw. After all, I really don't need a gas powered one. For trees that require anything larger than what I have, I probably need to call in the professionals. I have also recently found the joy of a good machette (thank you, David the Good!)

Himself had one suggestion about the tools. He said before you buy your first one, look at the sets that run with interchangeable batteries. Dewalt, Milwaukee, Kobalt, Makita Ryobi...they all make multiple tools with interchangeable batteries. When you start a job, he said there's nothing worse than a dead battery half way through.
Edit: He said that was the worse thing about battery powered tools when they first came 30 years ago, every tool had one battery and every battery was different. His work bench used to be crowded with various different chargers and batteries.

Battery operated chain saw is really useful in my opinion. I took out a large Brazilian pepper tree in my yard, where I started planting a lot of the plants you talk about on your channel. Electric corded type tools are ok just have to watch out for the extension cords plus the cost is the other negative factor. I have both. The electric has more power than the battery type.

I actually tried to do a cottage garden look in 2022 (my first year gardening) and made a lot of beginner’s mistakes. I think what I am going to do is plant some medium sized shrubs (gardenia or azalea, maybe) as a backdrop for my front garden and do the wispy little cottage garden flowers in front of them. They blended into the house and were kind of hard to notice from the road on their own. Also, I added a ton of milkweed mixed in with the flowers and the flowers attracted Paper Wasps which then decapitated all of my monarch butterfly caterpillars. I put some milkweed in the backyard and noticed the wasps were not bothering them back there. So I’ll be keeping all milkweed separate from the rest of my flowers.

Wow! English cottage garden is sort of southern country cottage look. Wonderful. Hard work starting from scratch without help. At 60 I’m right there with you.

Had a reciprocating saw years ago when I lived in AZ...great tool...beyond wood and plants it cut through a metal pipe🙂 My front yard no longer has grass (I dislike grass, upkeep a waste of resources, time and money), however, my yard person moved to northern Florida and during the rains of this past summer the weeds totally got away from me. So now I'm the eyesore of the neighborhood. I trim the grass in the backyard with a battery powered weed wacker, it works great. It makes noise (they all do) but even with the battery I'm able to use it easily. I know you and your husband will be successful with whatever you decide to do in your BY, FY and side yards. Look forward to seeing the progress in 2023 🤩🤩🤩

We use our palms for chop and drop mulch. A nice machete is perfect for this and a good workout! 😁

Maybe you could move the gardenia to a back fence spot where it could grow freely and continue to smell wonderful! Also, I bought a Bosch reciprocating saw at a pawn shop for $25 (advice from a HD employee who was helping me repair a sewer pipe in the garage wall while hubby was out of town). The pawn shop had lots of name brand tools!

@wildfloridian are there any websites that advise the best time of year to plant annuals in Florida? I'm in Largo, FL and planted Phacelia tanacetifolia a few months ago and still haven't gotten blooms. Then I have my purple cone flowers that were also planted a few months back. They are the slowest at growing. I feel like I am doing something or multiple things wrong.

I went all in on the 80v kobalt tools at Lowe’s. I only found the 80v online though. I only bought a couple of them with batteries. I figure I only need a couple at a time. The pole saw, chainsaw, and trimmer got my neighbors and myself through the storms this year.

If your looking for tools I would recommend looking at the Milwaukee 12v hedge trimmer and pruning shears.

You are cracking me up! "Going to do ... but then again who knows".
I would pull out all the box hedges they remind me of formal gardens (gardens that have rooms) not cottage gardens. But that's me.
This will be fun to watch.

Highly recommend the ego power tools. I've got 2 acres and use ego for all my yardwork with exception of a wood chipper. Buy the individual better items not the lower priced box sets. The batteries last a long time and the tools are much better than any gas powered tool (irt the noise and ease of use and maintenance)

I would love to start a butterfly/bee garden but unsure of what plants to get or when to start planting. I live in the northwest part of Florida, so it gets cold during winter. I so appreciate all your videos, thank you for doing this!

I love the planning process. We can learn so much from each other. In the back yard/garden, you mentioned a plan for a tea bush. I have on and my observation is that the tea bush and the Sweet Almond require a bit more water to florish. I wish I had planted them next to each other to make it a more practical watering process. I have soaker hoses down in those areas and attach the hose one or two times a week for a few minutes ( in addition to regular irrigation).
I cut my Area palms with a reciprocating saw and it works great. Once the stumps begin to dry out and look a bit unkept, I stitk bromiliads in them. It is looking beautiful.
One question: Do you have a designated potting area? Before the hurricane, I had a shady corner that I sectioned off with decorative fencing (posted for free and I scored) which served as a climbing was for various vines. Loved that space which had a table, chair, shelving, pots and soil etc.
I can't wait to see your progress!

My weeds are out of control. I'll spend a lifetime trying to get rid of it. What really ticks me off are the ants. How do I get rid of them in and out of my garden? I'm so over it! I'm in Polk City.

Cardboard and free wood chips are the answer. Lay cardboard over grass, dump wheelbarrow loads of chips over it, problem solved! Oak leaves so work as mulch. In February you can pick free trash bags full of oak leaves people leave for trash pick up.

I was watching the stress on your face when you were talking about the fact you have more weeds and grass in your yard. That’s been what we’ve had since we moved in to our place. I came to the conclusion lately that it’s not going to be grass ever again because I’m not going to use the fertilizer and effort to kill all the weeds. I’m going to try little by little to make it all into a garden. I know you have dogs that need a place to be but do they NEED grass? I know I know I’m more radical than you. That’s what happens when you’re 70 years old

I’m watching you talk about getting rid of your plants and I just want to cry. We moved into a house that had grass because he had just planted it but it’s definitely not some thing our yard wants to do. We have oak trees in the yard. I would love to have all the plants you’re getting rid of. If I had money I would volunteer to take all of the plants and give you truckloads of great soil so you could get started fresh. I just thought about the fact that it’s kind of like whatever hairstyle you’re born with you want the other style curly hair versus straight. Isn’t life interesting

Is moringa something you would Think of planting? I’m really convinced I should try to because it’s such a wonderful source of food and nutrients.
Does the tree you want your neighbor to trim affect how much sun is on his house when the sun is coming from that direction? He might want the shade so that his house doesn’t use as much air conditioning. The guy that sold us this house cut down all the trees that shaded this trailer so it cost much more and utilities.

@@lindafoster8182 We also love moringa and have about twenty planted around our house. You have to commit to pruning though. It's also great to use as mulch, and if you have chickens, it's an amazing supplement to their feed. It cooks like spinach, and the tips are like asparagus. Moringa has grown well from seed. Crack the seeds and soak overnight before planting when the weather warms. ❤
