I remember seeing Jessie smash dustox’s pokeball and I lost it. I don’t know why but that scene hit really hard😢
Seriously when I watched memories in the mist, not only Mallow's Mother was very ill that episode reminded me of my father. It doesn't matter when you lose a parent either way you can be very distraught and I know the massive impact it was when I lost my father. It left the same impact on my life as it did for Mallow. I understand the situation of that story especially in that episode. I know that Mallow deep down loves her mother like I do with my father. 💔😢👨👧👦

The first time I saw "Bye Bye Butterfree" I literally cried my eyes out. Seeing Ash say goodbye to the first Pokémon he ever caught, along with the montage of their time together, was beyond heart wrenching. I still get misty eyed when I watch episode.
And Mystic is right. Tell your loved ones you love them, because one day you won't get to. My grandmother passed away earlier this year and I never got that chance.
There was also that last episode of Sun and Moon where Ash says goodbye to his Alola family.
Staying in the Region and developing close ties to his newly formed family and friends was something new to Ash's journey. It felt like he belonged there and saying goodbye to his family and friends to go on with his own journey was sad and emotional. This was also touched on in Journeys when he and Goh visited and saw his Alola family. Professor Burnett calling him 'big brother' to her baby and Ash's reaction was something else. He realized something important at that moment.
Ash usually parts ways with his companions every end of season but this was the only time I actually teared up. I think this was the only time also that the anime showed Ash crying upon saying goodbye to the region companions.
@@kurk5650 I agree. The season felt all the more special and different from the other seasons. The story telling and the anime's focus on relationships was something else.
You can feel that Ash was really part of a family this season and he truly treasured it.
weird to think that the 2 saddest episodes of the anime (on this list) come from the alola region, probably the happiest looking region on the surface

those sun and moon episodes were the best ever, i'm not emotional at all, but the stoutland episode and mallow's mom episode made even me tear up.
The Stoutland is episode is one of the best episodes ever. It is the most emotion I’ve ever felt when watching an episode.
Quaza7 you're not the only one. That episode has a little bit of a tie in with my father and I. When I first watched it, I was already crying hard. At the moment when I saw Litten calling out to the elderly Stoutland, it reminded me of myself and my dad. My Dad was in Hospice in the ICU and I wanted to be there for the last two days but some things came up with my mom and her brother. Ever since I watched it, I started to compare Litten and Stoutland as my father and I. That's how much it literally hurts.
My #1 saddest had to be Team Rocket telling Arbok and Weezing to not look back. Just seeing those 2 ball their eyes out hit me the most. I was glad that in Alola, when Team Rocket was fishing, we saw their lures of their beloved partners and that was just 😢
That was one of the first legit episodes that got me into tears. Especially since, as revealed in Island of the Giant Pokemon, Jessie and James had their Arbok and Weezing ever since they were kids. They had their Pokemon longer than any other main character in the show. The fact they let them go for their sake and the rest of the Ekans and Koffing really tore at me. It was also the first episode to me where Team Rocket aren't real bad guys. They love to steal Pokemon, but they damn sure care about theirs.
I don’t know if it’s the nostalgia but I’ve teared up at basically every spot’s description. Thanks for pulling on the heart strings😭
Memories made of bliss made me so emotional so quickly 😢
The DP anime was my first series that I watched in Japanese. I remember all the openings and endings too. Not to mention the preview tune for the next episode. Anyway seeing Pochama (Piplups Japanese name) cry made ball my eyes out when I first watched it. Additionally, seeing it hit Pikachu and both of them crying tug at my heart strings. That scene and the rest made me really sad for awhile.
Now I prefer sub to dub because of DP; which is the best decision I made because subbed XYZ is on a league of its own.
Honestly i think the episodes "a poached ego" and "one journey ends another begins" have very nice endings with Ash catching litten after it accepts stoutland's passing and cacnea joining the group in team rocket's lowest point
The greninja release episode may have been unacceptable on so many levels (and still is) , but the goodbye was a hard hitting one 😢
Every episode here is memorable and iconic. Very emotional and personally felt everything. A fan of this anime for 24 years.
With “one journey ends,another begins” and “memories in the mist” being my second and first favorite episodes respectively im glad people have the same feelings.ash litterly got told that stountland would die,and mallow’s goodbye with her mother is just heartbreaking
Not the top but definitely one of the most sad/tearjerker moments in an episode is after Chimchar joins Ash, where it goes up against Dawn's Piplup, loses and expects scorn and disappointment from the others because that is what it recieved with Paul. Only to have a complete 180 and recieve praise and support for its efforts. That moment Chimchar started crying, I know we all cried too.
Loved how Brock also gave insight into how Chimchar felt about letting it out.
There a many life lesson messages in this episode, given a little retrospect with Paul.
For me one of the saddest episodes is: “the lost world of Gothitelle”
The episodes with Chimchar being adopted by Ash also was a great one.
And the episode after, when it lost the battle against Piplup and thought that it would be thrown away again, only to recieve praise and enthusiasm from Ash, the gand and the Pokémon, caused it to cry. I remember Brock saying "Sometimes you just have to let it out." Was a very emotional episode.
I haven't seen the episode in the number one spot, but just hearing you talk about it got me choked up. Because I was a momma's boy too, but my mom passed away on the 30th of March. I haven't been the same since. But hey, watching your videos is a great distraction. I appreciate you and the work you put into your content.
Snow way out is a very wholesome heart wrenching episode
This 10 year old kid was willing to FUCKING DIE for his Pokémon and to see his Pokémon return the sentiment right after makes me realize how beautiful the theme of companionship in Pokémon truly is
Mystic hitting us in the feels!!!!! In my experience Arbok and Weezing being released hit harder than Pikachu’s goodbye but that was likely me as a kid not wanting to believe Ash and Pikachu would ever separate. But team rocket going that far to protect Pokémon just added that extra impact. Also Litten had me choked up, it made me mad at the series for a few episode, I wasn’t ready for the feels.

The Stoutland episode was so sad, I almost cried a bit too!
So many good options, Bye Bye Butterfree and Poached ego will always be so very emotional for the fans who are old enough to have watched the Anime from the start.
Especially Butterfree as Ashs first catch. Even the episode where Metapod evolves as it sacrifices itself to save Ash from Beedrill.
One that surprised me as I never really liked Max was Do I hear a Ralts? Man when the music starts playing as Max is running against time to save Ralts' life gets me every time.
But for me The Stoutland Litten story is by far the saddest and hits so hard. It's something we can all relate to. The hardship of life, we all lose people as we grow up those people who looked after us and made us who we are. This episode just absolutely nails it perfectly.

This was what I thought until about a year ago ............
And then I saw ‘The homecoming crown!’
The Pokémon anime certainly knows how to hit us emotionally.
One episode that should've been on the list is the one where Ash's Poipole befriends an Minior, only for It to see It die in the end of the episode
( It's so ironic that the Sun and Moon season is the most sad and dark season in the anime)

Xy014 is also such a sad episode. Espurr being left alone in the mansion because the old lady died is just tragic for such a cute Pokémon.
A Poached Ego is my all time favourite episode. Them willing to let the Tyranitar kill them of it means their pokemon were safe was truly beautiful.
Yo, Charizard's Burning Ambitions...
I remember one birthday as a kid getting the VHS tape with this episode on it (I'm 31 lol so yeah, I grew up on VHS back in the day) and TO THIS DAY the nighttime scene where Ash talks to Charizard as it's still in the water staring at the door to the valley just pulls at my heartstrings.
Ash: I know just how hard it is for you to lose. To think you're not good enough...
That line is SO heavy because of the level of relatability. To feel like you're not good enough because the girl you like doesn't want you or getting turned down from your dream job because they say you aren't qualified enough. People can write off Pokemon as a 'kid's show', but it could be heavy when it wanted to be...
Emotional Damage
"one journey ends, another begins" to me is by far the saddest episode of the Pokemon series as a whole. An episode focusing primarily on the the fact that litten's mentor and caregiver stoutland is on the end of his life. On my second run through the series on netflix i actually considered skipping the episode, its THAT heartbreaking.
I still remember how emotional i got when litten cried apon the last leaf on the nearby tree fell and the rain kicked in, signifying stoutland's passing, as well as the surprise i felt when even team rocket's meowth came to try to cheer up a heavily grieving litten. At that point meowth was less concerned about his prior intentions to get meowth to join team rocket and more concerned about litten's emotional state after becoming aware of the fact litten's been swiping food to give to stoutland on account of its age and health
Stoutland dying was super sad for me. 😢
Yes to all of this list. Also, an honorable mention of mine is the episode that Serena cuts her hair. It's a powerful reminder that the journey isn't easy. We will lose as we fight towards our dreams. We get embarassed and see ourselves as lesser. But she takes the loss and uses it to get get stronger. She was a better person after her loss. I always believe that while our good times should be cherished, our hardships are acually what forms us into the best versions of ourselves. That episode said that for me
I loved your List Mystic & just like you I cry whenever I hear The Time has Come from Pikachu's Goodbye because I sang that at both my mom's & my Aunt's funeral so that episode hits me right in the feals the most

Wow I just gained a totally new perspective of the Bye Bye Butterfree episode. I remember the episodes that lead up prior to this sad episode, but to say that moment with Pikachu and Caterpie was foreshadowed, never even crossed my mind. But it makes a lot of sense after hearing that
The top two made me cry irl, the episodes made me cry, and wow do they hit hard each time I see them.
Koffing and Wheezing leaving is honestly the most emotional episode of the entire anime for.
Thank you for bringing tears to my eyes! Pokémon has really given us some heartbreaking moments.
I had a difficult time when James gave away its Cacnea
when you said they can be gone in an instant, it made me remember a scary fact:

One Journey Ends, Another Begins is the saddest for me, hands down, but your description of Memories In The Mist brought back memories of my dad. The last thing I said wasn't like what Mallow did... just "I'll see you later." I never would have expected while I was away that he'd have a debilitating stroke that took him from us far too soon.

Some of these, I do remember. And you were right to include them in this list.
I felt more emotional in Crossing Paths than I did in Bye Bye Butterfree. The episode had a great build up and a very satisfying conclusion.

What about the episode in Journeys where a Cleffa died and this girl made an eternal night thinking Cleffa turned into a star? She does say goodbye to her Cleffa’s ghost in the end, but it really hit hard.
RotMB: Buster Bunny looks up what Mallow's mom died of, develops a cure, goes back in time, talks to past Mallow to tell her it will be okay. Gives her mom the cure, and goes forward to see what changed.

I never thought this video would make me almost cry and mentioning the episode about Mallow’s mom makes regret saying the meanest thing I could ever say to my mom

All are very saddening episodes,but the one that hits hardest for me has to be Beyond The Rainbow from XY
Another episode that broke me is Tears for Fears, the episode right after Ash catches Chimchar. It really emphasizes how badly Chimchar was treated by Paul, and most importantly, how caring, empathetic and patient Ash is. It's an amazing depiction of trauma, and the scars it leaves.
“What makes me Misty most of all” was one of the BEST songs Pokémon ever produced.
Also that last entry hit me hard.

Despite people not liking S&M and Journeys, it has some of the most wholesome and emotional episodes in the entire Pokémon anime. Any episode where James releases a partner is always emotional. The Cacnea episode gets me every time with the final battle. It tried so hard. 😢
The episode about Meowth past with Meowzie and Persian was also quite sad.
I know this is saddest episodes but I always cry more with the movies I can’t watch Lucario and the mystery of mew or the Movie with Manaphy without crying my eyes out
The episode where May, Squirtle, and Meowth went back in time was a heartwarming episode too.
This is the only season that ash cried besides Johto, and It and I will say it again, my absolute favorite gen. so beautiful.
Cacnea's release to Gardenia was also another sad episode that made me tear up... I was hoping it would be on this list... or at least an honorable mention...
Yeah that's an underrated Episode, another underrated Episode I never hear people talking about is the Episode where Dawn releases' Ambipom to that ping pong place. We saw it travel with Ash from Hoenn (maybe even before, I've only watched the entirety of Sinnoh, Unova, and a bit of XY) to Sinnoh, then Ash traded Aipom for Dawn's Buizel, Aipom evolves, and then finds a passion (hidden talent) being ping pong and decides to stay there.
Also My #1 will always be Memories are Made of Bliss! I'm VERY surprised that Mystic didn't mention it, BROCK LEAVES FOR CRYING OUT LOUD! To me, I didn't thick Brock would ever leave, although I never watched all the Episodes from each respective gen, I knew that Brock has been traveling with Ash since the very beginning and to see him go (and Dawn) was the saddest thing to me. Piplup and Pikachu hugging and crying was the icing on the cake too... as well as Ash and Brock traveling their separate ways at the very end of the Episode. Me being around 9 when that Episode came out, I thought that was the end of Pokemon because Brock left and like I said, I never though Brock would leave Ash, it did make Gen 5 extremely fresh though since for the first time in my life I had experienced new Pokemon, a new gen, new protagonists, etc. You can say that about any gen, but it was my first new gen (gen 4 being my first technically, but first time witnessing brand new Pokemon, the Anime, etc.)
Lilie’s episode in journeys is also a really sad episode

My stepmom died back in early February. She's my real momma. #1 hits me hard. Glad I was telling her I love her every day.

look, i grew up with these episodes, watching Pokemon on Kids WB and Cartoon Network/Boomerang but those episodes just don't hold up. like it's sad Butterfree left but it's not that great and episode and Pikachu leaving was just a ratings trap. honestly more upset the stuff from Journeys isn't on here. the scene with Goh talking to Drizzle about how he feels about not knowing what he wants or feels, the reunion and conclusion to Lillie's family when they finally met their father, the crowd shouting Champion to Ash during the 4 way battle when he returned to Alola! These were WAY more emotional then those 2 and then some!
Hell, surprised Jessie saying bye to Dustox wasn't higher up. that was a gut punch compared to Ash saying he's goodbye to he's flying bug.

Maybe it's just me but I don't consider greninja truly released, I see it similar to squirtle rejoining the the squirtle squad or charizard being at the charisific valley
Hopefully Goh will continue Catching Pokemon more along with Ash on his adventure in becoming the very Best thier ever was in the Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Anime TV Series!
