The West Coast of the South Island is well-known as one of the wildest and wettest regions in the entire world. The Copland Valley track is one of the most popular tramping destinations on the West Coast with its natural hot pools a strong draw. The high annual rainfall makes for some spectacular rainforest to go with the stunning mountain views, but it also makes this area one of the most dynamic in Aotearoa with flooded rivers, rockfall and land slips a frequent occurrence.

How long will take to
cross other side of Mt cook ??

The recommended route is now Fitzgerald pass, you will need snow climbing gear all year around as you will have to cross Stewart glacier and grade 2 climbs. Its a full on 13 hr+ day over to Douglas rock. We bivyed at 1300 to the right of Hayter stream.

Literally 10's of thousands of people have crossed Copland Pass - to make a blanket statement that it is "not safe" is ludicrous on the evidence. Yes it is a serious Main Divide Alpine Pass, and reasonable experience, skill and fitness is highly desirable. But FFS I have a good mate who once carried his road touring bicycle over it as a short-cut.
