  • During a resent visit to the Two Tunnels Project, Bath, once part of the famous Somerset & Dorset Railway. Me and a couple of friends decided to return the sound of steam, to these notorious tunnels, as noted by many S&D Locomotive Crews.
    What you are about to hear is a recording of Somerset & Dorset 7F 53809 and Un-Rebuilt Bulleid Pacific 'Manston', played within Devonshire Tunnel, recreating a sound that has not been heard in there tunnels for over 50 Years.
    Hope you enjoyed!

      Oh yes indeed! Certainly was fun to do! They play classic music in the centre of Combe Down Tunnel (the longest tunnel of the two), and there's now talk of using my sound recording there too! :D Now that will certainly be something!

    I used to run and cycle through the two tunnels a lot in the past. Experienced a ghostly whisper in my ear when I was alone which has always spooked me. Very eerie vibe there.

      Oh yes, especially when there's not many people about.

    That 7f whistle at 1.25..... made me shiver!!! Absolutely superb. Sounds of the old S&D locos need to be played in these tunnels every day. Would make the cyclists peddle faster for sure! Will be the only way we'll here locos in S&D tunnels ever again......apart from Chilcompton of course,which WILL have the real thing!!!

      Thanks ever so much mate! Was just a little idea we had on the spot and it worked out extremely well! Just been in talk with a few S&D crew members and there going to see if they can get the sound recording a feature in the tunnels themselves! :D There is a sound system in there :) Certainly will be amazing if they do! :D

    That was fantastic Callum, what a fabulous idea, wish me d have been there to hear it, bet you couldn't believe how it sounded.
    I use to go underground at Monkton Farley and would often wonder how it sounded with Victorian miners digging out the stone and when we were right next to Box Tunnel, now to have heard a steam loco thundering through there must have been amazing.

      Thanks ever so much! Certainly was a quite an eerie feeling. Now that certainly would of been something I imagine. I've just been talking to a few Ex S&D Crew members and they say they know the people involved with the restoration of these tunnels and opening them to the public. Never know you might be able to hear this sound in there again one day, as they are going to try and get the recording a feature in the tunnels! :D Now that certainly would be something!

    No doubt someone at one end of the tunnel will be going around telling people the tunnel has a real Ghost Train.

    Back in 1995 when I was involved with the wells relief road protest me & another protestor who had a baby with her went for a walk along the old S&D line near wells when we heard a loud maniacal scream come from the nearby woods, it sounded like a madman which did scare us, so we decided to go back. Who was it I wonder.

    Quite novel. It did sound quite comfortable although I would have been run over where you were standing. Rob

    • @SDJR7F88
      @SDJR7F88  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks ever so much Rob! Certainly was great fun too do. Oh yes, the tunnels were just wide enough for the locos, if one got stuck, some crews could not get off the footplates!

    • @FarlandHowe
      @FarlandHowe 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      SDJR7F88 That would be disconcerting

    • @SDJR7F88
      @SDJR7F88  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Indeed. To make matters worse, the tunnels ares are un-ventilated (the long un-ventilated tunnels in the UK), and are both a steep gradient throughout. The tunnels did cause one of the biggest accidents on the S&D, which sadly killed a number of people. The crew of a freight train got over come by the smoke from their engine and passed out and the train ran away under power into Bath Green Park, where it crashed into the yard.

    What equipment did you use to play back (and re-record) the sound in the tunnel?

    • @SDJR7F88
      @SDJR7F88  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well it was a bit of a spur of the moment thing. We play one of my TH-cam video which had the shot of 53809 and Manston in on my friend phone, and I recorded it with my camera. I plan to go back at some point and use a proper set-up, including a speaker :)
