  • www.pmtonline.c... Programming drums on your computer can be difficult to make realistic and take lots of time to get it sounding right. A controller keyboard is great but its not the same as a playing a drum kit. One option is to use an electronic drum kit and play the part in live using the built in sounds but that means getting the perfect take audio which is tough to edit. Another option is to use the midi output on your electric kit to trigger drum samples in your computer. This also means you can fully edit, change, cut, paste, loop and quantise the midi after the take and also audition different sounds later in the mixing process, ideal for those who mainly play other instruments. Even a basic electric drum kit can produce great results and you also get the enjoyment and creative benefits from playing a kit.
Here we plug the Yamaha DTX400K into a Mac running Logic and BFD Eco as a plug in. We downloaded the DTX driver from the Yamaha website and mapped the hi hat to work well in BFD but you could use any trigger kit. If your tight for time or can't get a good result straight away, record both audio and midi and use the built in sounds to perform with and spend time choosing and mapping the midi later after the session.

Well you can go usb and go that route; you just wont be able to use the onboard sounds and features of the kit. As for your audio/midi Im sure you have a interface to work with but if so it should work if the interface is set up properly. Sometime its just an I/O mix up.

One thing that's always puzzled me is how would you record a double kick pattern with a kit like this?

Could anyone send me links for these cables? I am getting this set to practice on in Friday and would like to be already prepared!
    Thanks!
