Setting the fame aside Mathew Perry had a struggle with addiction just as millions of us out here have had in one way or another during our lives.. it’s a difficult journey. More so when your choices & missteps are Judged in real time by millions. It takes a strong individual to come out the other end of addiction alone without the added pressures. Addiction and mental illness/depression go hand and hand, yet it’s still so misunderstood 😢😢😢So many suffer in silence because the judgements from others is equally devastating😢The fact that there’s no cure for Bi Polar, as an example, makes it even more difficult for these individuals. We may not understand but we should practice compassion ❤️

May I ask, are your patients people w/ substance abuse issues? What I keep remembering Matthew saying after the book came out, and then, when finding out he had obviously relapsed in his recovery, was that he could help others, even if/when he couldn't help himself. Do you find that to be true of his book?

I lost my wayward son in 2010, he was killed by a hit and run driver who stopped long enough to pull his bike out from under his car. I will never understand how such a sweet little boy went so far off kilter, but as long as he lived there was hope that he’d want a better life for himself, the kind of life we hoped he would one day have, but sadly it was not to be. And once they’re deceased all hope is gone and then the blaming starts and I don’t suppose it will ever end. And yes I was very shocked at the news that Matthew Perry had passed away, couldn’t stop thinking about him for weeks. When we think of people who are just larger than life in our minds,
it’s difficult to process the fact that he passed away, and although not immortal in real life, he is in reel life, and that will never end.

After reading Matthew's book shortly after his death, I wondered if his life would have been better if he had been able to pursue a career in tennis after he got to the U.S. Life on the sports circuit seems to be healthier for many, and maybe he wouldn't have been so prone to addiction. Truly a talented young man. He felt very supported by Keith and wrote positively about him.

Thank You Keith for your kind and quiet compassion your voice has been such a large part of my life. I am an addict and alcoholic I found my end of the road and made my choice to get clean and sober in 1991 and have enjoyed life on a much greater scale since packing up for rehab and never looking back. Now I am coming up to 33 years in AA and all that comes along with getting older. Thanks for being a positive voice for those who tried to break free, and those who do. I think of my addiction as a painting in my bedroom, a reminder of my past but never very far from where I dream.
