Goof Troop (SNES) Playthrough

  • A playthrough of Capcom's 1993 license-based action-puzzle game for the Super Nintendo, Goof Troop.
Played through as Goofy in single-player mode.
Was there ever a Disney TV show that managed to be more quintessentially 90s than Goof Troop? I was in the fifth grade when this attitude-laden take on Goofy showed up on the Disney Channel, and I watched it every day after school. I loved it, so it was pretty exciting news when Capcom announced a video game adaptation of Goof Troop.
Goof Troop begins with Goofy and his son Max going on a fishing trip when they see their neighbors, Pete and his son PJ, being kidnapped by pirates. Being the nice guys that they are, Goofy and Max follow them to the pirates' island in order to stage a rescue.
The game is an even mix of action and puzzle solving that reminds me a fair bit of Irem's Kickle Cubicle ( • Video ). You play as Goofy (strong but slow) or as Max (weak but quick), and each of the five stages is made up of several single-screen rooms that primarily involve killing enemies by throwing stuff at them, kicking blocks, and finding keys as you work your way toward the boss.
The game is a lot of fun playing single player, but it is the fantastic two player co-op mode that elevates this cart above the average SNES game. It's not a long or difficult game by any means, but it is one that's fun to play again and again.
That, and it has a really charming presentation. The sprites are cute and cleanly drawn, and the soundtrack is fantastic. The instrument quality is way up there for a SNES game, and the original tunes are some of the best that you'll hear from a Capcom SNES game.
(But where's the theme song from the show?)
I remember this one rating well in Nintendo Power and the screenshots totally sold me on the game. After renting it God knows how many times from the local Hollywood Video, my parents finally relented and bought a copy for my sister and I. We played obsessively until we could plow our way through without using any continues.
It's not talked about nearly as much as the Disney games Capcom made for the NES, but in my mind, Goof Troop sits right on par with classics like Chip & Dale and DuckTales.
Oh, and it's one of the earliest Capcom games that Shinji Mikami worked on. You know, before he became famous with Resident Evil. Don't worry: nobody in Goof Troop becomes a sandwich.

Goof Troop was such an amazing cartoon back in the day. This game certainly does it justice. Capcom made so many gems on the SNES.

Goof Troop is a ridiculously fun little action-puzzler that lives up to the quality of Capcom's NES Disney games.

This is one of the best overall designed games for the SNES and indeed any system. Great design, music, levels and just the right amount of difficulty. Challenging but not so frustrating that you don't want to try. The sliding block puzzles were really great. It's too bad that they didn't make a sequel to this along the same lines.

Man, what a game! It was so much fun playing it back in the day; and that catchy soundtrack, always loved it, even sometimes I hum or whistle it, particularly the stage 4 track: "Lose my way". There are a few things I did not remember, like navigating those dark rooms, the bouncing boulders, solving the puzzle while avoiding the fireballs, the red pirates that threw the stuff back at you lol!
Last time I played this was perhaps around 2004, sadly I don't have the patience I had as a kid and could not finish it again.
Thanks for bringing back those lovely memories.

Logo: On a black background, we see the Capcom logo (with the word "CAPCOM" in yellow with a blue outline, set in the Korinna font), which shines briefly. The logo looks metallic. In some cases, there is no animation.
    Variants:
On Capcom-developed games for the Nintendo Entertainment System, especially Mega Man (starting with the 4th game in the series), the logo has "PRESENTS" in white below the now-smaller Capcom logo. The logo shines in the 6th game.
On Capcom's MVP Football (1993), launched only in the Americas for the SNES, the logo is bigger and fades in rather slowly compared to the original logo. "PRESENTS" is written in blue and a different font. The logo was accompanied by a high-pitched version of the theme described below.
On games released for the Game Boy, the logo is in monochrome. One example with this is Street Fighter II.
On Final Fight One, the non-metallic version of the logo from the 2nd one is used, and the "Presents" text is in red.
An enhanced version of the logo made a surprise appearance on DuckTales Remastered.
    FX/SFX: Just the shining.
Music/Sounds: Just two warbling synths, then a long-lasting electronic piano glissando (which sounds different depending on the system/game it appears on). In other cases, it's silent.
Music/Sounds Variant: A low-pitched version of the theme can be heard on the game Marvel Super Heroes: War of the Gems (awaiting for more games that used the music variant).
Availability: Seen on all Capcom developed games in the 8-bit, 16-bit, and 32-bit era, such as Mega Man X1-3 (only the SNES version of Megaman X3 has this logo, the PlayStation and Megaman X Collection versions use the next logo), Street Fighter 2, etc. This logo was left intact on Megaman 7 in Megaman Anniversary Collection for PS2 and GC, and on Megaman X and Megaman X2 in Megaman X Collection, also for PS2 and GC. The "Capcom Presents" variant is known to be on Megaman 4-6 on NES, which is also left intact on Megaman Anniversary Collection and Final Fight on the SNES.

We're the Goof Troop, and we always stay together! We're the Goof Troop, best of friends FOREVER!
Classic cartoon, classic game! This is one of the first games I've ever played that showed us just how brilliant 2-player co-op action can be for puzzle-solving and dispatching pesky pirates by throwing stuff at 'em, A Link to the Past-style, or luring them in with a bell to kick blocks into their direction. The mechanic of catching objects thrown to each other, though, that I can't get enough of. Awesome game. It's Goofy and Max like you've never seen them before! You cannot "goof" by picking this game.
Pretty cool soundtrack too. I swear, at least one of those instruments is also used in the first Mega Man X.

I remember I used to play this game with my dad. I was 7 years old and I found it difficult to play, but I used to see my dad so excited to play it that I tried my best. Sometimes I felt asleep on his knees while he was playing. I remember every time he got to the bosses, he woke me up to see if he won or not. One night, 4 am, he woke me up because he had made it to the final boss. I ran to the living room with a blanket, so excited and anxious about the whole event. Those times were precious. I felt like my dad was my best friend. Everything changed as I grew up and when I came out to him at 14, we grew apart. I’m 32 now and he’s still very homophobic. Wish I could go back in time to feel that joy again.
