I wanna say, as an industrial designer with a deep love for history of art and design, this video was great and very insightful about an era that is usually dismissed because of its maximalist and overcomplicated aesthetics. Now looking back on it feels like maybe because it was so catered towards children, preteens and teenagers it has been dismissed as just aesthetics for immature people, but who is the future of society if not the youngest of us?. I had never considered it like that before this video and i would love to see more discussion about it. Hope to see more videos like this from you!
It wasn't a "climate change campaign", it was a Zeitgeist for technology-nature harmony built on the work-life balance trend that preceeded it. Focus then shifted to the topic of sustainability (which in and of itself isn't a climate change topic, even if these can be connected). C. change hysteria is itself a trend that repeats itself regularly throughout human history. Not saying that it's unscientifc, just saying that humans love their angst campaigns as much as their bright bubble optimism trends. Frutiger aero was in many ways the much needed optimism backlash to the doomsday angst of the late 90s/early 2000s with its pandemic, crashes and wars. Our current doomsday vision will eventually make way to an optimism revival, it's just a matter of time.
I don't think they lied about frutiger aero, more like frutiger aero itself was the lie they told us. Frutiger Aero was the future we believed would come and Neo-aero feels more like the future we know will never come, the impossibility of it in a way is what makes it so nostalgic for a lot of us. We miss feeling hopeful about the future and we hang on to what it used to feel like while at the same time knowing it's deceiving.
