Thank you Ford engineers for making the insertion of a new filter almost impossible for a human being with normal anatomy. I struggled for about 45 mins and had to mangle the filter so much it is unclear if the filter seated properly when I finally got the filter inserted to work.
Great instructions but a stupid design. I love Ford but they really could have made it easier, just like on my 19 explorer. That was horrible. Thank you all, it kind of helped...lol...
I agree why even put a screw in that location when a tab-style lock would work....Ford probably wants to charge 2.99 for a new "screw-U" pun intended...lol
The entire vehicle is that way. Oil filter is surrounded by lines and hoses, battery requires you to dismantle wiper area and airbox to do. Whole car is full of afterthoughts
Thanks for your help, the old filter was black. But a poor design. I used nylon zip ties to scrunch the filter so it would fit, then cut off the zip ties and pulled them out. The filter expanded into its slot. Thanks for the video.
Ridiculous setup for where they put it. Why not a panel behind the main open section of the glove box, like most of the auto world does. Big FAIL for Ford on this. It was so easy on my 2009 Prius and my 2006 Sonata that I would check it probably every quarter, sometimes just clean & vacuum, sometimes replace.
If you are having a problem with the filter housing door then try connecting the top part of the door before closing off the bottom. It is a tight space. We hope Ford does a better job with future designs.
@@filterheads you know what it was? I was trying to put it back on backwards, I.E. the smoother side out. After 20 minutes or so of struggling, I got it put back in because I wasn't thinking and forgot to take a reference photo on how to reassemble it.
While I agree replacement is a bit of a challenge, I disagree with many here who are complaining. I worked for several years in engineering design. Engaged in more meetings than I care to remember, and I can tell you this... any final product (like the Escape) is a result of many, many compromises. Ford packed a whole lot of technology into a small space for a reasonable price. After the Ford Dealership (where I have my Escape serviced) wanted $65 to replace it I purchased a filter (from Filterheads) for a fraction of that. Watched their video and replaced mine in just under a half hour. No big deal. If you have not done it yet, but are planning to... getting the new filter into the slot is not the problem. Getting it up into position is. I placed 4 rubber bands on it (2 in the center and 1 each holding down the top and bottom of the sides (so they appear as a kind of fan). That allowed me to easily slip it up into place and partially insert it into the slot. Then I snipped and remove the rubber bands. The rest is history.
Excuses, Excuses, Excuses. Ford changed the design on the 2020 models making it far easier. There are a lot of egghead engineers out there today given what the universities are now turning out. They have no common sense when it comes to practical serviceable designs. These filters are a joke and are the result of useless government mandates. Cars never had them till now.
A Philips screw would have made too much sense to Ford. It’s all about building the subassembly quickly, not for someone later to have to service with common tools.
My Ford dealership wanted $106 to replace the filter, I said, 'not today!!'🤣🤣 And changed it myself for $20. This video really helped me, thank you!!
Glad it helped!
Hardest part is getting the plastic cover back on after jamming (and nearly destroying) new filter into slot. Great design Ford!
Totally agree, Ford needs to do a better job.
well, they also put the battery so far back you have to take apart the engine filter or windshield cover to change it ... last ford ill ever buy
i agree
Not to mention that you have to pull down the big panel to change the oil. The oil filter is in a stupid place too. Awesome piece of engineering
This is why I hate engineers

I agree this is a poor design on Fords part.
2 middle fingers to Ford Engineers.

LOL! Glad it helped, Fords engineers need to do better.
Fuckin right. Never done so much to replace a filter in my life. The location is ass as well.
Try doing them on certain BMW models, they absolutely suck to do, and Mini Coopers are worse.....
Great engineering. Put it in the hardest place possible.
Thanks for video but do I really need to reinstall the torque screw if you can just lock the housing cover in place?
You do not have to reinstall the torque screw on the housing door.
@@filterheads thank you 🙏🏼

I bet if the engineers who designed this had to replace one, they would design it differently. What a bad design. Good video though. Cheers!
I agree this is a poor design.

Could this be the reason for a vinegar type smell when i first start my car ?
The filter can hold a smell if it has been in the housing for a long time. It is good to change it once a year or every 15,000 miles.

You're welcome! I haven't used zip ties before but it sounds like it worked great for you.
What a great idea Jeffrey, thanks for sharing.
thanks i will be doing that
You're amazing. Thank you I just saved $80.98
Fantastic!

Yes I agree this is a poor design.
Is 2019 Escape Titanium similar?
Yes the installation is similar.
Thanks for the great video. Helped me alot!
Glad it helped!
I can't get the plastic back on after the filter is in.
It doesn't help that I'm a 350lb male with terrible knees and nowhere near as flexible as I could be.

@@l0rd0ct0d0rk thank you for this comment, my dumb ass never would’ve realized I was putting it on backwards for 10 minutes. You’re a hero.
@@shaunwatkins3523 perhaps you and I were brothers in a previous llife. I definitely know to take a reference photo when I take one apart from now on.
Really clear introductions
Glad to hear that!

Thank you for informing us. Prefer this install process over the one Nissan came up with on their Altimas and Rogues.
thank you for that sir i was wondering why everything was so hard to do on these vehicles im a tech

Everyone knows Big Filter was behind that decision. Study it out and take the filter out!@@fiddlyphuk6414
Can you tell me if my 2017 expedition EL has a cabin filter? I can't find anything on it. thanks
The 2017 model did not come with the cabin air filter option.
Left hand drive vehicle version available?
We do not have the left hand driver video at this time.
Jesus christ ford ! Between this and changing the battery I'm never buying one of these cars again.
They could do a better job with the installation process.

Does anybody know if the 2019 is similar to this or the 2020 setup?
Ford Escape 2013 - 2019 all have a similar install process. I do not have data on 2020 at this time.
That looks like a pain to replace
Yeah, Ford does a poor job when designing a proper way to change out the cabin air filter.
I feel like they do it on purpose so they can milk you at the dealer

Absolutely. If it were up to me, I'd probably replace them all with standard Phillips screws.
what a shitty design, thanks for helpful video.
Yes it is a poor design.
This Hass to be the dumbest damn design I’ve ever seen. This is right up there with the battery insulation underneath the freaking hood Cowell
I agree it is a poor design!
i just did that one .. awful
This worked really well!
Thats great!
I hope this works on my 19 escape...
The installation process should be similar.
Great video. Keep it up
Thanks, will do!

감사합니다
What a great design 🤦🏻♀️
Right?!
