- Sorry for the delay on videos guys, been a manic few months, but...i'm back. As some of you know, i spent the beginning of this year living in the Wudang Mountains for a month.
In this video, i will just tell you a little about my day to day life , living here, in a Daoist school, studying Taijiquan (Tai Chi). Hope you enjoy the video, more Wudang videos on the way very soon!
The magic of the Chinese flute is that it can make anything sounds ancient. The song he was playing is actually contemporary composition by a Hong Kong musician for the TV drama 笑傲江湖. The name of the song is 滄海一聲笑.
Yeh, i hear that song everywhere! The chinese flute does have a beautiful sound. I had a very special time in Wudang
I recognize the song from Jet Li's Swordsman 2.
It makes everything sound dignified! :)
You know Taoism more than common Chinese folks who only go Taoist temple praying for good fortune..keep it up.!
It's amazing to be able to watch a contemporary teacher in the ancient Daoist mountains. Nick looks a dream in the Daoist blue gown, a cut in fashion above
the Roman, Greek and Arab togas. Thanks, Nick, for showing the world the universe of Daoist existence.

A very inspiring video and very inspiring words. I spent a few weeks in Wudang in September of 2008 studying Damo's Tendon Changing Marrow Washing Qigong and Taoist Internal Alchemy meditation under Hu Xuezhi. It was an incredible journey which I still think about pretty much every day. This year marks 15 years since that trip and I have found myself longing to go back ,even more so after watching your video. Great work, you have a new subscriber.

Wow, I look forward to more videos about Wudang mountains. I read a lot of wuxia novels when I was a kid and noticed that Wudang mountains and martial arts being referenced a lot. Oh, Li Mu Bai in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon is trained in Wudang martial arts too! :D

Good luck with your training in Wudang Shan. I spent a long time training up in Wudang Shan and Hua Shan back in the day. I opened the first Wudang Pai school back in the day in the UK est. 2000.
In those years, nobody was teaching any form or methods of Wudang Tai Chi or Qi gong. Later on, Lucia Ring Watkins appeared on the scene, and nowadays, we have many others sharing the arts in many different ways.

You are definitely one of the few foreigners who are connected to Chinese traditional culture. Even the majority of Chinese today are so commercialized that the tranquility and self discovery in the traditional culture are out of touch with them. Hopefully one day when materialistic possession and consumption hollow people out, the traditional values will shine again.
I think there i a lot to be interested about in China. The thing i find worrying is that most Chinese kids would rather learn Taekwondo than Chinese martial arts...i don't understand that
@@nickinchina2552 Yeah, learning Taekwondo is probably partly a fad. It takes some internal revelation before someone truly appreciate Chinese culture.

My fiance and I have decided we are going here next September! We are super excited! This is the smaller school correct? I want to be sure we go to the right school.
There are a few schools on the mountain. This is the school owned by Master Chen Shiyu. He recently opened a second school too. Not actually on Wudang mountain, but very near....and it looks nice!

I lived there for three years, I miss it a lot. I used to go up to where your video opened every Thursday during our day of rest and practice on my own. You were only a short hike from where I lived. I think my favorite temple was the needle grinding well but there are many beatiful places on the mountain, especially if you go off the beaten path. Very nice to see the place and hear you talk about your experience there, it brings back a lot of fond memories.
3 years! What an experience, i have often considered a longer stint there, a year or two maybe. There are so many great places at wudang. I miss it so much
@@nickinchina2552 I was at Yuanhe Guan (excuse my pinyin, it's a bit rusty) just down from hui long guan. At the time that's where Chen Shi Xing was teaching. Three years was the traditional length of study there although very few people actually completed the three years. I can't say it was easy, the living conditions can be quite a shock to anyone who hasn't spent time in China before, but I loved it and I think if you have the opportunity to spend a longer period of time there I think you would too.
I didn't study under Chen Shiyu but I've met and talked to him a few times, he's one of the better teachers in Wudang and I genuinely like the guy.

Good question! I was there in winter not many insects at all - a few bugs i had to evict from my room...but not many. However, i was told that the summer months are pretty bad - mosquito hell

No historical record of Chan San Feng ,they say ...what have you found out?
For example ge eral Ji Qiping is kniwn in 15th century and wrote a book that all historians ahree upon.
But tai chi as Taoist martial art....from San Feng ?
It is said all tai chi started with Chen family....

I was just wondering about the history of that temple in the background. Was it destroyed during the cultural revolution or was it just abandoned at some time?
I'm actually not sure, i think it may have been destroyed in the cultural revolution though

I paid about 6000rmb for a month but the longer you stay the better the deal. That 6000rmb covers accomodation, food, training. They have a few different accomodation options if you are looking for something cheaper

How would someone go about going up here? This looks like something I'd like to do for myself one day. Im a Chinese, I have a decent grasp on the language so I think communicating would be okay. How did you manage to find someone to let you stay with them there?
There are a couple of schools on the mountain, but only a couple. If you are in China just do a baidu search for schools on Wudang. Then, if your language is ok, just give them a call and see what they say. The school i stayed at was ran by Master Chen Shiyu and they were really flexible about length of stay and things like that (because it was winter and no one was there haha) Really worth doing it.
What lineage of Taoism is Wudang Taoism?

Its the Wudang Martial Arts Academy. there are several with similar names - this one is located at Huilongguan 回龙观. On the mountain, rather than in the town.

i paid about 6000rmb for the month (800usd). That included, lodging, training, food...everything. And safe? Absolutely, everywhere in China feels safe. If you are thinking about doing it and have more questions fire away!
