Instead of the "afraid of men" angle, I liked the original implication that Star Sapphire just didn't want the Flash interfering with their plans again, and went, "What do I know about the Flash? Well, they're a man, so if I get rid of all men on the planet, I'll get rid of the Flash! That's clearly the easiest way."

The Brave and the Bold miniseries is quite a delight in how it portrays Hal and Barry. Barry has his life together, he is in a relationship with Iris, has a steady job outside the mask, and is beloved as the Flash. By contrast, in each issue Hal has a new job and a new girlfriend - signifying his unstable life out of the costume - and the only thing he has going for him is being Green Lantern (though he faces some problems there). But in the last issue, Iris is dead, Flash is on trial and his life is in shambles, with Hal being the one to provide him support as well...his life is always in shambles. Its quite the heartwarming depiction of their friendship.
Make her a magic based star sapphire, someone to go against alan scott, also from the same era and magic based. She can still be the queen of the zamarons, but her research into magic got her trapped in the 5th dimension, causing the zamarons to look for a suitable replacement, while she watches, thinking her former subjects abandoned her, so she tries to create a new army from earth women. Her gem would be the natural enemy to the starheart, with her starting to grow obsessed with alan scott from watching his adventures, somewhat similar to carol ferris's yandereness. Her gem is the only thing able to put out his green flames.
Well, that's the funny thing... the idea of the Starheart.... isn't fundamentally something that needs to be a one-off. Especially if you lean into the idea that Star Sapphire isn't from 3-dimensional space. It's kind of a throw-away... but her powers involve dimensional manipulation... shifting people ... things... It's not well explained, but... it's interesting.
OG Star Sapphire would have been a good fit in golden age Wonder Woman's rogues gallery. A kinky costume with fishnets, ruler of her own planet AND she hates men? Diana and Steve would have been in bondage by page two.
The one thing that popped into my mind was that since she the ruler and sole inhabitant of her own planet, she was lonely and just wanted company. However, she also had an enormous amount of pride, so if she went the supervillain route, no one would think of her as pathetic.
You know... it occurs to me that this is using a definition of "ruler" that isn't the same as a position of political authority. But its stating that she has a physical ability to control her planet. Hence the magic staircase. On her planet she can just... tell things to happen. Which... is actually closer to Mxy than I personally like... but... in her case it's limited to when she's on her planet. Which... could be used to explain what her motive was. Maybe... she's trying to extend the reach of her powers? You could have her think like a mad god trying to consume everything to fuel her personal might.

I like the idea of the Zamerons casting her in another dimension and replacing her with a double (Carol). Their Gems/power rings being connected could explain Carol being a villian in the beginning. I think there are levels of political intrigue that could be used here

Bringing back old characters with the same names as more established characters that they have no connection to can be fun. Obscure DC characters I'd like to see return: (1) The original Dr. Doome-- Wilfred Doome, who had a time machine before Marvel's Dr. Doom (1942) and fought the 7 Soldiers of Victory. (2) The Paper Man was a villain infatuated with Wonder Woman. His power was to become paper thin. (3) Mr. Banjo, a Captain Marvel/ Shazam villain who played the banjo. He was an enemy spy who could send secret messages via banjo music.
How about covering the Bronze Age Star Sapphire from the Secret Society of Super-Villains? Where did she come from, and where did she go? I've heard the murder of Green Lantern Katma Tui was retconned from Carol's SS to the one from the SSS. (Speaking of Katma, a lot of DC's supporting cast ladies from the Silver Age [Carol, Katma, Iris, etc.] were murdered or otherwise treated horribly the last few decades. You might want to address that.)
7:00 *"Try slipping outta the way of these slugs!"* That line just reminds me of the steamroller scene from _"Austin Powers"..._ I know they're talking about lead "slugs" meaning bullets, but I just have the image of the Flash - _The Fastest Man Alive_ - just paralysed with fear and screaming with arms outstretched as actual squishy _slugs_ edge menacingly towards him at a rate of 4 inches per hour! lol
Being afraid of men seems loosely based on where she raptured away all the [20] men. Even within that omitted contex, the rapturing was a (failed) attempt to counter her nemesis, the Flash, not wholly "men, ugh." From your overview of the story, the misandry initially seemed subtextual. Also present, a subtext that she thought women would be easier to dominate (but those Keystone girls had gumption and weren't gonna be pushed around). To keep Barry's claim that she's afraid of men, it needs to be set up in *this* story. Star Saphire needs to recoil or flinch in an interaction with a man that doesn't have super powers and isn't actively trying to harm her. She flings herself away from Barry into normal space, is laid out, a civilian or police officer offers her help and she lashes out. But the conclusion that she's afraid of men in only half right: in the climax, both Star Saphires are pitted against each other, stripped of their magic power and her misandry is revealed to misanthropy and fear of other people. Give a little retcon shake to the Saphire choosing Carol more lantern ring style, not just because she looked like the former queen. Have her chosen and abandoned by the Saphire and her space Amazons. Have Barry learn from the dark reflection of his actions in SS1's and heal, instead of breaking down further. It doesn't all quite fit together yet, just spit balling how best to incorporate and elevate what was presented without just spending an hour writing a draft in a comment that's too long to reasonably assume anyone should actually read.
Thinking about the OG Star Sapphire... I'd write her as a mad god. She's not lonely... she wants to be the sole power in the universe!!! She could share her vast power... but that's not what she wants... and.. this psychotic obsession is how she became so powerful. Thus... she tries to wipe out the population of Earth... because it'll increase her own personal power. the OG just... doesn't make sense with the later stuff, so I'd not even try to tie it in with the Zamarons at all. Unless... it was one of the Zamarons who got exiled for being a lunatic....
loved the video! didn't know about golden age star Sapphire. would love to see more videos about star sapphires in general, like Deborah Darnell, a forgotten villain. Or more about Carol too. xoxo
Given they retconned a Golden Age Red Lantern maybe they'd want to create a Golden Age version of all the lantern corps? It'd be a easy way to kinda bring her back.
Golden Age Star Sapphire could be a great villain for an event if they wrote it carefully. The reason she never attacked Earth again? She's not trapped on her planet, its just taken her this long to craft her master plan! Her dimension-shifting powers could be really dangerous if used properly, and especially if it is extrapolated to letting her travel between Earths.
Yeah, that's a thing with "mad god" archetypes. They aren't bound by time the way normal people are. So having the character sit and think... for 30 or 40 years actually works.. because a mad god doesn't have any reason to be concerned with aging.
"Jupiter Ascending, is that you?" I know that people don't like this movie, but I love it! Thanks, Sasha, for making this joke. it means that someone else saw it besides me. Also, your Ms. Frizzle wig is FIRE!
It's interesting to see what characters and concepts stuck and which didn't. I wonder if the silver age Star Sapphire was also inspired by the golden age character Harlequin; a villainess who was in love with Green Lantern but didn't know she worked with him in civilian life.
Lol, I just read Green Lantern #16 last week (sadly, in a b&w format). In that story she seemed like a vehicle to get Carol more involved, rather than just pining for GL on the sidelines and getting mad at Hal for standing her up. I haven't read any other stories with Star Sapphire, but from what I've seen there needs to be more ground laid pertaining to her motivations, and maybe a tweaking of her origin and history. She could be an interesting character if handled correctly, but so far, no great shakes. Thanks, and love the wig, Miss Frizzle. :)
Completely random thing to take from this video, but that Flash Annual #1 was my introduction to superheroes. My dad only kept a small collection of comics from his childhood, and with the other ones being stuff like The Dark Knight Returns, Flash was the only one my book-ravenous seven-year-old self could really comprehend, and I LOVED it. From there I found the Justice League cartoons (sadly not B:TAS, took me until high school to finally watch that), Young Justice, Spider-Man, etc. It took until Spider-Man’s entrance into the MCU for me to *really* get into superheroes, but the Flash (and especially Wally West) has always been one of my favorite fictional characters, and I’ve always felt a special love for the Flash Family because that Flash Annual was my first comic book.
Ok FIRST the Wig ...YOUR ROCKING IT, Don't ever doubt yourself again, you look GREAT. Second TY for this story on Star Sapphire I, Golden Age Origin GREAT. Third, maybe we could had a story where Jade is actually Star Sapphire I daughter the rightful heir to the "kingdom" LOL. Just a thought.... BTW Jades Power Pulse and the Star symbol on the Star Sapphires costume is the link. Blessings
Somehow this was like, the last semi prominent golden age character I became aware of. I dunno, compared to the Flashes, who are a very tight knit unit, the relationship between Alan and Hal specifically seems much more distant, even adversarial in spots. And even if it was a flash villainess, it's a GL sort of thing now. There's not a whole lot of time spent dealing with Alan's baggage in GL books is my point so things slip out of notice.
because alan is worlds away from hal. His power source comes from the starheart, which is magical, while hal and the others are more sci fi. Even jay sometimes is linked with the speed force, plus he also has the advantage of being barry's inspiration, which I still think is a great idea.
Suggestions for obscure characters: Shark (from Green Lantern) and Creeper. Also, question: Why back in the Golden Age there was so much content for a single comic? PS Thanks again Sasha!
Back then, comics was _the_ most consumed form of media back in the day, which is why it was called the “Golden Age.” Everyone was reading comics: men, women, children, teenagers, old, and young. Comics weren’t just about superheroes(they weren’t originally about superheroes), they covered all genres: horror, drama, romance, etc. After the Comics Code Authority, comics entered the Silver Age and became a “niche” hobby. Even today, comics aren’t as popular as they were back then.
Interesting rundown of the history here. Never saw the actual Golden Age stories before. I think I can see where the 2000s team ass-pulled the "fear of men" thing, though. She did clearly not want any men around in her second GA story, and it would kind of make sense for her to have been deposed by the Zamarons (who are vehemently contemptuous of all men) in the first place if she showed fear rather than disdain in the face of a male opponent at some point. That isn't completely absurd (by the low bar of Gold and Silver Age writing, anyway) but it sure needed to have more foundation laid for a post 2000 audience. 6:45 I feel like being the last man alive make also being the fastest man alive a tautology, even more so than the way the sole inhabitant of a planet might be called its ruler. 7:52 Perez, granted, but you might also include anyone who ever voluntarily took on the art duties for a Legion of Super-Heroes title. They knew what they were getting into. Fred Hembeck devoted a whole page a gag strip about how the group has way too many members.
Can you do a video on the Bronze Age Star Sapphire? The one from the 70s Secret Socety of Super-Villains? That was my introduction to the character. She had some intriguing subplots going on/hinted at, but then I never saw her again. With Carol's SS being just someone mentioned in footnotes, dialogue and letters pages. This Gold Age one I only discovers years later in a higher quality reprint of that Flash Annual (reprint of a reprint), but loved discovering an Earth-Two double (oh and thanks, I think this might be my 1st kearning that she had a second Pre-Crisis appearance). I liked her, or the idea of her, enough so that her modern return was one of the few modern comics I justhad to get (even if from a dollar bin). One question that I never had answered for myself was which Star Saphire was it in Crisis? Carol or the SSSV?
The Milton Caniff style artwork in the original Star Sapphire story is the bees' knees. I'm wondering if the original being called Sapphire, and hanging out with Zamasons and not liking men, was supposed to come across as so sapphic?
There was a 3rd golden age story that didn't get printed as the comic was canceled the issue it was to come out. I remember the last ending page or two from that story printed in, I think, one of the 100 Page Spectacular comics. The last panels show Wonder Woman showing up and I think original Green Lantern and telling the Flash she would take the captured Star Sapphire to Reform Island to fix her criminal tendencies. Apparently, that page or two that showed up in that comic is the only surviving parts of that unpublished story now. It was colored and everything ready for print.
not gonna lie, the panel of her begging Barry to let go of her, that look of terror she has, kinda haunts me. Makes me feel sympathetic to her, even though she doesn't have any redeeming qualities (or a name).
I really thought you added in the goose because it went off exactly as you finished quoting "if you're the only inhabitant, are you the ruler"? Who can tell you no?🤔
Hey, Sasha, I would love to see a video of you talking about characters that you, and many others enjoyed, that were killed in comics, and never brought back. Two characters I wish were never killed, were the original White Tiger, created by George Perez, and Thunderbolt, a speedster who's own powers killed him in Power Man and Iron Fist vol. 1. I'm looking forward to your contributions on this subject ! Especially if they're obscure characters that are really interesting. Thank you, for reading this. ❤️ What do you think of this idea for a video?
Here I thought OG Star Sapphire wanted to rule only women because she was early gay rep but nah she couldn't think of a way of stopping Jay without removing 1/2 her potential subjects or she's so terrified of guys that she had to surpass Mxy on her journey to find a dimension without men.

Even within that omitted contex, the rapturing was a (failed) attempt to counter her nemesis, the Flash, not wholly "men, ugh."
From your overview of the story, the misandry initially seemed subtextual.
Star sapphire from the golden age sounds fun.
I like how green lantern started from space star i think too they formed into a lantern and ring and eventually made it ways to alan scott
@3:50 lmfao the fast 'who are you' cracks me up
I'm really enjoying this channel. Finally, someone who deep dives into DC and not just Marvel.
Goose envious of your wig lol. Goose probably wants to know where you purchased yours 😆. Great video 📹👍
"Jupiter Ascending, is that you?"
I know that people don't like this movie, but I love it! Thanks, Sasha, for making this joke. it means that someone else saw it besides me.
Also, your Ms. Frizzle wig is FIRE!
Lol I've seen that movie more than once, it's not good but I find it so entertaining, and quoatable.
I would love to see a Queen Bee breakdown! so many conflicting iterations of that character!
I LOVE your deerstalker detective aesthetic!
It's interesting to see what characters and concepts stuck and which didn't. I wonder if the silver age Star Sapphire was also inspired by the golden age character Harlequin; a villainess who was in love with Green Lantern but didn't know she worked with him in civilian life.
I love the voices you do! So funny and cool! 🎉
Oh, and mainly for the same reason, I’ve always considered Gorilla Grodd the Flash’s real arch-nemesis.
7:52 okay, that got a chuckle out of me.
Blessings
very interesting back story and your reactions are great. The slap made me laugh out load, literally.
I love that you make storys of my favorite characters from marvel and dc thanks so much
Can I just mention Jadis in the magician's nephew is also a ruler of a planet while also being the only member of the population
"All Flash" is a pretty cool title.
I hope they bring that back.
The original costume looks cool. I wish we had that more than the stripperific version.
Must this blessing shield you from the wrath of the Holy Ones & Zeros.
PS
Thanks again Sasha!
Didn't she already do Shark? th-cam.com/video/yA2fu_0GXXU/w-d-xo.html
@@foldabotZ Yes, proving once again... that the CCA are the real villains. :D
I caught that Kid Lantern issue panel with Wally learning Hal is GL...
that's a good issue. lol
Star Sapphire is cool and all but that wig? Amazing. Frames your face, compliments your tones.... A+!
Really cool to see the character concept jump rogues galleries!
Love OG Star Sapphire's shoes AND your wig, My Sister!
@Casually Comics can you do more videos on the various lantern corps please 🙏
The Milton Caniff style artwork in the original Star Sapphire story is the bees' knees. I'm wondering if the original being called Sapphire, and hanging out with Zamasons and not liking men, was supposed to come across as so sapphic?
"Stop watching Jupiter Ascending on loop!"
Never!
You should do one for Dial H! Love your content
The way the Star Sapphire approaches earth reminds me Junji Ito's Hellstar Remina
Hey Cas, can u do a video on Starbreaker. I don’t know why they haven’t used for anything in a while because he’s a really cool character.
I too am still on earth only because of my thirst for green lanturn. By the way I'm a freelance artist.
Don't be so hard on her. We have all seen our plans fail and go "you know what? I better leave now" at some point in our lifes
Her b&b ep was special to me because it got more into the character and study her
I like this. Thank you
7:32 I don’t know why that made me laugh so much, but it did 🤣
not gonna lie, the panel of her begging Barry to let go of her, that look of terror she has, kinda haunts me. Makes me feel sympathetic to her, even though she doesn't have any redeeming qualities (or a name).
I love the wig! You look gorgeous!!!
I wonder if this Golden Age Star Sapphire was in Justice League Unlimited in the DCAU?
DCAU should be or Silver Age Star Sapphire (Carol Ferris) or Secret Society of Super Villains' Star Sapphire (Remoni-Notra)
With all the conks to the head that Hal's experienced over the years, it's no wonder he doesn't know what will is.
Love the Ms Frizzle Wig!
I really like your wig in this video.
Question: If they’re called “Star Sapphire”, why are their costumes pink instead of blue?
The fact that a Flash comic featured a villain named The Fiddler.....i dont think they realised how sughestive the entire tirle is.
Can he even remember all the planes he flew?! What other defense does he have! Hal Jordan, how could you!
Here I thought OG Star Sapphire wanted to rule only women because she was early gay rep but nah she couldn't think of a way of stopping Jay without removing 1/2 her potential subjects or she's so terrified of guys that she had to surpass Mxy on her journey to find a dimension without men.
