Alex, in my opinion, was already falling in love with Winston when he found out that Winston lied to him. Alex was in the stage of "I can't believe this is happening to me. I found someone who sees me and finds me worth something". It was bad that he got so disappointed. And in my eyes, that's why he didn't want to be with Charlie at first. He just got confirmed that he is not worth it and pushed Charlie away. It's not like some people say that he "settled" for Charlie. It will also be out of character for him to settle. He is uncompromising with himself.
