I was just thinking..how important TH-cam is for this sort of communication. I mean, just think, I basically went to your office and had a discussion with a real doctor and it didn't even cost me anything! And you have the opportunity to level the playing field from people that are not doctors but speculators. So, I subscribed and I hope we'll be getting regular updates on all aspects of pain control.
I just couldn’t live without Lyrica. I take it every day and I can ride 4 horses daily. Without it, I couldn’t get out of my house. I broke my sacrum in 5 pieces (amongst many other things) in a skydiving accident and I have terrible electrical discharges in my right leg. These used to get so bad before Lyrica that I’d end up drenched in sweat just from the pain. I LOVED YOUR VIDEO!
I took Lyrica 350 mg a day for eight and a half years but unfortunately I started to develop long term side effects which made it impossible for me to continue. The doctor I was seeing at the time gave me a schedule of weaning off it which was far too quick (9 days! - I didn’t know any better at the time) and I went into the worst withdrawal I could imagine which lasted for three and a half months, during which time I lost 17kgs. The withdrawal symptoms and its effect on my body were much more severe than when I’d gone through chemo for cancer a few years earlier - it was brutal and traumatic. I mention this because if for any reason you have to stop taking Lyrica, please do it VERY SLOWLY. All the best.
Gabapentin was prescribed to me eventually at 3200 mg as my my pain in fibromyalgia made my symptoms extreme. I landed in a testing center for early onst Alzheimers, which was my mother's primary cause of death. I was exibiting all the symptoms of cognitive decline. When we got to the PET scan it showed no characteristics of ALZ. I had noticed that as the gabapentin dose was raised my cognition declined. But my concerns fell on deaf medical ears. My primary doc said, not a side effect of gabapentin, as did my Rheumatologist and pharmacist. But my body and brain disagreed. As I weaned 'myself' off, my cognitive clarity SLOWLY returned. It was a good 6 months+ before I felt greatly improved. I have never felt that I completely regained my above-average memory. Am I in an unique situation or is this more common than described.
There's supposed to be a new drug coming out either at the end of this year, or next year that's an alternative to lyrica and gabapentin that works to stop hyperexcitability of the nervous system and less side effects. Lucid med mentioned it.
Hello i read u review my dad also take lyrica for legs and arms pain and i see on him same as u describe lose memorie on short term that being worse bad side effect others one are less harm I try make him give up take them but dr told him pain will come back
My husband died this spring after being admitted for severe dementia. Up until he was given his prescription of gabapentin. He did up to 20 crossword puzzles, a day, jigsaw puzzles, card games, etc. and was on top of his game in politics. Before he retired, he was a parts manager for automotive company, and he knew 30 years worth of catalogs, my heart without looking anything up & he was known across the world for his ability to rhyme off part numbers. Within six months of going on gabapentin he couldn’t even remember how to change channels on the television, he frequently deleted his games and couldn’t figure out how he did it. He would call his daughter in the middle of the night and when he got no answer, thought that she was blocking him or that he had a wrong number because he did not realize it was the middle of the night. He did not die of dementia, however. He died of Covid because even though there was an outbreak all around him, he could not be convinced to keep his mask on to protect himself. I have radiation fibrosis as a result of breast, cancer radiation treatment and now my doctor wants to give me gabapentin. It’s not going to happen. I would sooner be hit by a train, then have drug induced dementia.
I had a similar problem while taking different medications... for anxiety and depression. It took many months for my mind to clear up but it did. Lately I was prescribed gabapentin with ketamine and lidocaine in a made to order ( in a compounding pharmacy, then delivered to our local pharmacy for pickup) topical cream. So, I can apply it to the target area, when needed. Sometimes I need it a few days in a row, sometimes not at all for weeks, now that it’s been about three years from the injury. I still get stoned from it.😮 In between, I use stretching, heat, or Voltarin cream, when needed. Castor oil is a very user- friendly pain relief too. Saved my feet from double plantar fasciitis. ( along with the arch supports) Chin up! ❤Heaven is Forever.
Also, latuca seriola and latuca canadensis are natural pain relief that is supposed to heal nerve sheaths. The tea and the sap. Some bozos smoke it to get high, so it might have a rep for that. It’s edible. Relaxes. So does Goldenrod tea, which is said to reduce spasms.😊
My doctor gave it to me for fibromyalgia but it made me "neurotic", a different person. I didn't realize it affected my eyesight until one night I was driving to a business and realized that I was turning from the wrong lane.
Lyrica works really well for me with my chronic pain. It has helped dramatically with my muscle pain and my leg cramping at night. I take it 30 minutes before I go to bed. I get great sleep, something I struggled with in the past because of my pain. When I first started lyrica, I was groggy in the mornings, but that side effect passed in about one month. I also had some mild dizziness, but that also passed in about one month. After 3 months of taking lyrica, I can now mow my lawn, work in my garden, and function physically at my job, with less pain. It has helped me a lot in daily activities. It has also made me more calm and eased my anxiety. ❤❤
My Doctor prescribed Gabapentin for my Neuropathy pain in my lower legs and feet...I took it for about 3 months but it didn't really help much other than I slept good at night. So he took me off Gabapentin and put me on Lyrica and I have a follow up appointment in 4 weeks to see how my pain level is. I'm hoping everything works out as it did for you.
Lyrica has been a mixed blessing for me... It works so good on my pain that it gives me a life been on it since it first came out....I have never felt high on Lyrica ... I take it as directed.......I learned how to Crochet 8 years ago and am Constantly learning how to make new things and even grew my facebook.... Started a couple. pages....and at age 63 , just got a new hip and taught myself how to swim.... Now the Neg.... If for any reason there is a gap and my Meds don't get to me I start feeling it by the end of a couple days....returning symptoms from my Spinal Issues... I am. bone on bone pretty much everywhere by day three Im in bed and withdrawal has started, family have watched me suffer for up to 7 days... By 7 days Im miserable... Agitated, the itching that had started since day 3 has even gotten to my eyeballs and physically and mentally Im not me any more I just hurt and my skin is crawling......the withdrawal looks like Im coming off heroin.....I went without it once for 3 months -.. I barely got out of bed I just hurt so bad without it... My spine is a mess and with Lyrica I am able to enjoy life....I have nerve issues from my back that cause me pain everywhere... But right now I am scared my doctor retired and his replacement is already deciding not to refill meds I have been on for 20 years....I have to find someone to call in my Lyrica and My Meloxicam ... I am looking for a new doctor...and if I go thru withdrawal again - this time Im gonna talk to a lawyer - Lyrica Says to wean off not jerk off..... Im not gonna lay at home and suffer... Im going to the ER and getting documentation so my pharmacy and my doctor will see how they failed me by allowing me to run out of a medicine that has Warnings about how to lower Lyrica doses to prevent the awful withdrawal....I hate looking for new doctors... Currently I am taking half doses saving the other half to buy me more time before going without. I don't think I can handle another full withdrawal experience... yes Lyrica a mixed blessing - chronic pain patients are being cheated because doctors are afraid of having their names on medicine bottles - Well maybe they need to get different jobs.... . Well its after 9 am and I got phone calls to make ... I don't want to give up..but I will be looking for a Dr Kavorkian before the year is up if I have to live with out something for my nerve pain. I get situational depression-and I got too much going on to deal with this right now..
I started Lyrica the day it was delivered to my CVS, my doctor was waiting on it for me, Within a month my nerve and muscle was controllable for first time in 5 years, I was bedridden and no quality of life. I take 150 mg , 3 times a day with a 10.0 Lortab, 2 times a day. My life was improved alot but that was back in 2005 or 6, but I ask my doctor last year, is there anything natural therpy's and natural herbs and supplements, I could take so I could get off the Lyrica. He says no Lyrica is Safe and doesn't cause Alzheimer's like I know it does, I have been on ot over 20 years and the Medical Research on Nerves and Muscles still don't have any cures or anything else, what have they been doing with all the money that they have been getting from gov for N and M research, Looks like Nothing. They don't want us to be cured. Its so Evil.
Thank you! Finally, an articulate and credible source of knowledge regarding Gabapentin! I’ve been taking this medication for approximately eight or nine years. It is extremely effective for my nerve pain!
I’ve had. Nerve pain for 20 years.I started out on gabapentin after about five years. I maxed out only dose. And then Lyrica came on the market and it’s been like a miracle for me. Can’t sleep without it too much pain. Thanks Doctor, for your information. I’ve been looking on the Internet for years and never seen much information on nerve pain.
After 2 weeks in the hospital where the doctors were trying every opioid in the book to control my husband's extreme rectal nerve pain (damage caused by prostate cancer radiation treatment) Gabapentin was the only thing that had any effect and it really saved him from one part of the suffering he had to go through in his cancer journey. My wonderful husband has since passed but I will always be grateful for the pain specialist who prescribed gabapentin.
Thanks for relieving my anxieties about gabapentin. I started taking it a year ago for peripheral neuropathy, with no side effects. It literally worked the first night I took it. My quality of life is much better, although I have been concerned about some of the things I have seen about it online.
I hated Gabapentin! I gained over 30 pounds in less than a month on this drug. I also was losing my hair! My fingernails started to have the ridges in them. I stopped it after 2 months. I was given it for neuropathy pain. It did not help with that very well. Then they put me on Pregablin. Same effects- hair loss by the handfuls. As far as I am concerned, both of these are not good drugs, at least for me.
My wife was prescribed this for some strange nerve pain, we suspected it was stress. She had terrible constipation and was sleepy. She would often talk in her sleep, it was a bit scary. The dosage was 100mg three times a day. Being we suspected stress she quit the medication and started cbd oil and within three to four weeks her nerve pain went away.
Been put in gabapentin when I had knee replacement. I noticed my RLS just didn’t happen. Asked if I could continue with it. I am taking three 100m. A day. It has been a blessing to me. No side effects and I sleep absolutely better.
For me the side effects of Gabapentin and lyrica were WAY worse than the pain I was experiencing. Those drugs did nothing for me except make me dizzy and gave me seizures. They kept prescribing more and more. Finally I decided to just kill myself but then a doctor told me to stop those drugs. I began to feel MUCH better almost immediately. I still have a great deal of pain but at least it isn’t as bad as taking Gabapentin. I think it’s an awful drug. AWFUL !
So do I. Well said. It can also make people talk a lot. It’s not even prescribed in some countries now. In some countries people are getting compensation for being prescribed it.
In your 19 min video I learned more than 5 visits to my doctor. I’m not crazy about going on drugs long term and any drugs for pain relief so I asked several Qs about my Gabapentin prescription. All I got was dismissal and the “don’t worry “ responses so I frankly had little faith in the drug. Doctors told my uncle for years that his Oxys were a miracle drug and weren’t at all addictive and I saw firsthand the devastating consequences of that complete lie. Maybe I’ll try my Gabapentins again. My dosage is nowhere near that sky high 3200 mg you mentioned so perhaps it will give some relief for my Sciatica. I just find it sad that it’s nearly impossible to find a doctor I can trust any more. The good ones are booked up, the pretty good ones are so busy they only have 8 minutes per patient per appointment, and he bad ones are impossible to spot :/
After taking gabapentin for ten years my doctor took me off them because he found they had given me a fatty liver! So I went in with one pain and came out with 2 pains!
@@paulrogers1756 We used to have the most amazing healthcare the world ever knew. Now we are all just servants to the pharma companies. Doctors, universities, the FDA are all taking $millions researching, prescribing and approving drugs that they know are just making things worse without helping the cause of the problems. Meanwhile if anyone promotes exercise, diet, healthy lifestyle etc. they get labeled antixvaxxers and science deniers and extremists. 70% of drugs approved by the FDA have to be pulled from the shelves after a few years. The latest scam drug Ozempic is made by a European company and its banned in Europe because its too dangerous. Meanwhile, here in the US we are trying to mandate its use amongst the poor with government money and anyone who opposes it is labeled a “racist”. Drug company account for 70% of all the network news advertising dollars right now. Wonder why nobody is reporting on it? Who would bite the arm that’s paying for those big fat salaries?
Your subjective experience has zero to do with anyone else. Gabapentin literally is a miracle drug for me. It may be for that commenter. You have no business trying to get someone else to not take anything.
@@rachamimslonimdwek2650 who said I was trying to get someone else to not take anything? Learn to read before showing off your stupidity. I was just thanking the person for making an informative video and adding an opinion. By your own standard, why does your subjective experience give you authority to tell me what I can say or not say?
Best thing I ever did was stop using Lyrica. Horrible restless leg syndrome, put on 30kgs, destroyed any chance of sleep. Final straw was when I struggled to walk the 100 metres from my gate to the house in under an hour.
Thank you for your clarifications. I have been on Gabapentin for about 15 years for my psoriatic arthritis and decided to stop to see how well I could handle the pain and never again will I do that. My nerve pain was off the charts. I was in terrible pain. Gabapentin allows me to function and sleep. It works miracles for me. 😊
I have severe complex PTSD, fibromyalgia and am a recovering heroin addict I have just over two years clean and I wouldn't have been able to do it without gabapentin. I struggle with so much pain both psychologically and physically and it really does help me relieve the pain just enough to get by. I think it's an amazing drug and I'm very grateful for it.
Thank you for posting this video. I know the videos you mentioned, I immediately knew they were wrong. I’m a Neuro RN and have been giving these meds since the late nineties. I also am a patient. I take Lyrica for neuropathic pain post spinal fusion and multiple disc herniations. Lyrica has had many positive side effects for me; my anxiety is much better, I am more refreshed after sleep and the dysthymia I’ve struggled with my entire life is improved. I’ve noticed a significant lift in my mood and motivation if I lower my dose for a few days and then take my original dose as prescribed. I would love to know how it does that-Xanax has the same effect on me but unfortunately it is a drug to use only short term. Lyrica also helped me avoid opioid withdrawals all together after months surgery. Lyrica is such a good drug it’s a shame these people are giving it a bad name. Thanks again.
This helped my friends fibro but she got really clumsy and her balance went bad but mainly she got sooooooo angry like rage level anger it was crazy she took it for a year before the anger was destroying her life and she chose pain over the weird clumsy peripheral side effects she was dropping things and the anger was out of control. Such a shame it had this effect on her even with the weird clumsy ness and balance problems she probably would have stuck with it for the pain relief but the rage fits and constant explosive anger was so damaged to her life. This is probably rare but I do know a lot of people that had psychological issues with this drug like depression mood swings their emotions felt out of control on this drug perhaps this could wear off I’m not sure but as a drug that can with mental health issues it’s going to cause opposite effects in some people although I’ve heard of irritability with the drug I haven’t heard of anxiety mainly mood swings to depression and irritation
In my first week, I began having night terrors and over-sedation. I was told to stop immediately. Bad advice. Severe withdrawals. Dose back up to 100, then 200/dy due to multiple orthopedic injuries and fibro. My MIL is on @3000mg/dy, and her moods can turn on a dime. It's sad because she runs people off and gets so lonely. She's a small woman who's had multiple ortho surgeries, some unsuccessful. Getting older is not for sissies.
I have chronic back pain. I understand how difficult it can be to find something that helps. Pain can become unbearable. I’m not there yet but I understand.
Very very helpful podcast. I mentioned this before. I just started on Lyrica and I needed to hear this again if you’re out there, Doc, I hope you know how important this is down and I hope other people speak up and tell you, so… I listen to your other podcast and you’re very informative. You’re very easy to understand and I am very thankful for what you had to say! Mary from Ohio.
Gabapentin is a miracle for my pain. Stenosis. Pinched nerves. Calcium an spurs. Bonus I sleep like a baby. No side effects except, I have my life back!
@@uyoebyik I haven't been on it in several years due to the side effects I got from it. It's hard to tell if the weight gain I had was from the meds, or the fact I couldn't physically do much at that time. I have since lost the weight through a changs of diet, and early onset Parkinson's.
@@Sinbadthesailor52 gabapentin would make me very dizy, vomit, and constantly exhausted. Worst of all, it didn't improve my pain. I would get up have my coffee, and want to go back to sleep. Pregabapentin didn't help until I was at very high dose. The improvement in pain was very small though. It caused confusion, short term memory loss, agitation, and hearing loss. My hearing returned over a peroid of weeks after stopping it.
Gabapentin has been a saving Grace for my mom after an almost fatal car wreck and tons of nerve damage from a major head injury. Thankfully she is now 70 and a spit fire. She is on a walker, has pain, is on a lot of meds, but she rarely sits still and she’s here with us. She was 35 when she had the accident. My celexa wasn’t working so much after years of use so my doc tried me on lyrica. I only took it 3 weeks. I cut my hair off and wanted everything I said and thought to rhyme. It literally made me bat shit crazy! I don’t know why I reacted like that but I went back to my celexa for awhile. Now I don’t take anything like that.
My head was useless. It felt like a balloon. No memory, no recall, searched for words but they didn't come. I forgot in mid sentence what I was saying, dizzy, stumbling around and couldn't put one foot in front of the other. Very scary to start losing your mind. I couldn't judge distances either. Horrible qualities.
Could it have possibly been the combination of going off Celexa and substituting it for Lyrica, like the whole-picture is taken into account instead of just contributing those manic side-effects to taking lyrica? Gabapentin and lowering your Celexa dosage may have been a better working option. Thanks for sharing your stories!
This is a lifesaver for me. I cannot tolerate NSAIDS at all, and refuse to take opioids. My rheumatologist wanted me to take oral prednisone daily, and I hated the side effects. Without Gabapentin I would be in a wheelchair and/or bedridden.
Been taking it for many years. Virtually no side effects other than a little groginess in the morning. Amplifies the effect of alcohol so I DO NOT recommend mixing the two. Otherwise it is a miracle drug in my opinion because it greatly reduces neuropathy pain!
I started taking gabapentin, and not long after, I got weird symptoms, was diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis. Now, this is my life, trying to get that stabilized, and it's not good. My life has changed forever.
Good video, I've been taking Gabapentin for 3 years to help with chemotherapy related neuropathy in my feet. I'm a 600mg twice a day and it's much better. Not perfect, but make walking around and sleeping much easier. Thanks for the information.
Lyrica was a game changer for me. I have Fibromyalgia along with back and neck injuries and surgeries. My hips were so painful that I couldn’t sit down comfortably. I still take it today, along with another pain medication at night. Unfortunately, I don’t sleep well overall.
I know a number of people who have done better on Cymbalta for fibromyalgia. It also has official indications for diabetic neuropathy as well as major depression and generalized anxiety.
At the local pain management clinic they are firm believers in those. It did not work for me but I have a fairly ugly case of damage to the feet. Everything else you say seems to be real consistent with the people up there, they love the stuff.
I'm 74 & have fibromyalgia & have been on Elavil for about 20 yrs..also am disabled with ptsd (Vietnam Vet) I also take 1mg klonipin 4 times daily..manage very well with combo!
I’ve been on Lyrica now for less than six months. The worst side effect was the weight game. And when he said 4 to 5 pounds it was more like 40 pounds. I am working on taking that 40 pounds back off. It was a little depressing because I was a size 4 and I went up to a size 14 so quickly that I didn’t have any transitional clothing. Would I try it again? Yes because it works for the neuropathy and helps me to sleep better.
The weight gain is not the medication itself. It’s just bcs the food just tastes soooo good when on these meds. But if u control the food cravings, or if u eat as usual, u would not be gaining weight
I think a lot of 'withdrawal' complaints are simply that when a pain med is stopped, the pain comes back, sometimes with a vengeance, like a rebound effect. For someone in chronic, severe pain, anything that relieves it will be addictive for that person. Confusion, dementia and delusions are listed as common side effects of this medicine.
I have been on gabapentin for years. But recently my pain began getting worse from my neck down with restless leg, etc. I would wake the next morning so exhausted. After various tests and X-rays my doc decided to try me on Lyrica. I have not started it yet because of all the side effects I read about and I have an aversion to weight gain. But I do want my life back. After watching your video I feel reassured that Lyrica is worth a try. I just pray I don't gain 30-40 pounds.
As with all medicines they work differently for everyone. Hoping you don't gain a bunch of weight and that you get the relief you are seeking. Gabapentin works for me so for now that is what I will take. But, good to know that Lyrica is out there for later if I need it. God bless you and good luck.
Gabaoentin 1 took for 15 years. Until I met Lyrica. Let me explain it like this. Scale of 100 points Gabapentin 40 points Lyrica 97.2 points Total game changer for me. Started at 75mg twice a day. Was upgraded to 300mg twice a day. I have chronic insomnia so I can’t tell ya it helps me sleep.
I've been on Lyrica for 6 years now due to SCI (Spinal Cord Injury) pain. I take the same dosage of 300 mg 2x a day. It has helped some but my chronic pain is still bad. I built up a tolerance and it doesn't work as good as it once did. I give it a solid C+.
Our daughter committed suicide after being prescribed Lyrica and Cymbalta, please if you take this medication & start having suicidal thoughts please speak to your doctor and get help
I'm sorry for your loss. I experienced thoughts of suicide while taking Cymbalta. I've never been on Lyrica. But I do take Gabapentin. I would say the culprit was the Cymbalta. Again I hate you lost your daughter. May God continue to help ease your grief. We just lost my nephew to suicide. Thank you for warning people to stay active with their communication with their physicians if they have any thoughts of wanting to harm themselves or their symptoms of depression get worse. Some people don't realize their medicines could be the cause. I will be praying for you 🙏
Can I just say you nailed it! I have fibro and I've tried gabapentin switched off to lyrica just recently and this has given my life back. Yes every single drug has withdrawal and side effects but my reward has been so awesome that I'll deal withdrawal if I have to.
Did you have to ween off the Gabapentin when you switched over to Lyrica? If so, how long did you ween? I've been on Gabapentin the past 4 years for neuropathy stemming from a severe spinal cord injury. Gaba has saved my life as I'm in horrible pain otherwise. Unfortunately, after 4 years of usage, my body has built up a tolerance to the Gabapentin and I'm now looking for other medications to help me. My pain doctor recommended Lyrica for me, but I'm nervous to get on it as I've read a lot of horror stories regarding this drug. I'm happy it's helped you the same way Gabapentin has helped me. I'm nervous about the weening process for both drugs though. Any info regarding weening to Lyrica would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
I use Lyrica for night sleep and off and on in the day when pain is too much. My surgeon that took the tumors out of the nerve center on the left side of my head and neck said I would have more pain than anyone had ever seen. This is one of my help drugs, and no, I am not addicted to it or any drug except anti inflammation drugs because I have inoperable tendinitis in my neck. Thank you for the information.
Thanks. Just started gabapentin and had concerns. Go low Go slow is good advice. and after one tablet I'm encouraged as opioids don't do much for neuropathy and sciatica
Gabapentin made all the capillaries in my arms and hands to break. I was literally purple and blue and my hands and arms looked like many old people look. As a side, I’ve often asked old folks with purple and blue bruising if they take Gabapentin and the answer has always been yes. I stopped taking it and all of the bruising went away. I figured that if it was doing that to my arms, what was it doing to my heart, brains and my body as a whole.
I have been on Lyrica for about 7 years, for a pinched nerve in my spine.. - It works wonderfully, and has taken the terrible pain away, after an adjustment to 225mg daily.. - I have gained weight unfortunately,, but not a few pounds, but,, 45 pounds.. But, I rather have the weight, than the horrible pain of a pinched nerve.. - Not everyone gains weight though, but I wasn’t so lucky in that department..
Gabapentin makes me feel aggressive, irritable and some confusion as well. Tried using again 10 years later for back pain and arthris pain. Same effect. Lasy year was prescribed Pregablin (generic) for restless leg. Works great..no side effects, sleep thru the night. Helps with arthris pain. Can you account for the difference. Gabapentin is off my list for pain relief, but couldnt do without pregablin. Thank you for your informative video.
I had heart attack, stroke and severe psychosis and those are a few of about 80 severe side effects. No amount of pain relief is worth death. Risks not worth it at all. I will preach against these drugs loud and strong! If I can save one person the horrors that I went through, it's worth it!
I forgot to mention,, I was suffering with migraines for years,, at least two a week.. - After I started taking Lyrica for a pinched nerve in my spine,, not only did it stop all that horrible pain,, but my migraines simply disappeared.. - Just like that..
One thing I've noticed amongst many gabapentin bashers (not all!) on other channels is that they seem to be more upset that they can't get their hands on opiates so they make up wild stories with the end goal to sway their doctors they can't take gabapentin and must have the opiates. I know many pain patients have a much harder time getting prescribed opiates these days and actually need them, so, once again, I'm not saying all are like that! I just notice it's a very common theme amongst gabapentin haters. Pain clinics are much better suited and "equipped" for those situations since private practicioners aren't keen on supplying long-term opiates to people who claim to be in chronic pain. 👍 Great, informative video!
I really appreciate your video. I didn't understand these details that you've described, and have been wanting to reduce all the meds I've been on since very serious mva 6+ years ago. I also have developed fibromyalgia and while going down on all meds, I was working with my MD and didn't realize that when lowering my dose for this, I was lowering it at night instead of the day. We have changed that and will not feel as concerned as I had and I will look at what I can do with diet and supplements (and good shoes! 😊) to continue nerve healing so that I'm able to get more pain relief before I try to get completely off gabapentin. Also helped me understand why I've been able to keep my actual pain meds level the same (except up to 8 weeks major post-op) since about a year after the wreck. Also helped me understand a bit about my reaction to baclofen. Thank you!
Thank you I have a long history of pain as a patient and I’m in pain management I was on gabapentin quite a while ago and I don’t recall why I got off of it I will now consider it again I will let you know how it goes My best wishes always from Las Vegas Craig
I was diagnosed with spinal stenosis 25 years ago. Initially, I was prescribed 300 mg gabapentin three times daily. It caused me to become severely depressed. I have been taking 100 mg in the morning and 300 mg at bedtime for the past 10-plus years and have been able to tolerate a low level of depression. Lyrica was prescribed for pain before my taking gabapentin and caused me to quit breathing voluntarily for several minutes after taking it.
Which is the “fantastic choice” ? Gralise ? Gabapentin ? Pregabalin ? I’m dying here with nerve pain in my feet. I asked my doctor to switch me from Gabapentin to Pregabalin because it’s my understanding that you take less than Gabapentin and it works better. How do I transition to Pregabalin from Gabapentin ? Can I just stop Gabapentin and start taking Pregabilin ? Is there an adjustment -- taking both ?
To much of anything is not always better. But for those of us with chronic pain…..there’s got to be something….we deserve to have quality of life. Quality of life is so very important
I’ve never seen any reports or literatures of rupture of muscles, tendons and ligaments due to muscle wasting induced by Lyrica, but I tore many muscles, tendons and ligaments due to Lyrica. 😞

My daughter in law has tried for years to get OFF Lyrica and her body will not let her do it! It definitely did help her but she wanted to stop taking it as it was causing other issues like flat demeanor. She has been weaned down, followed all doctor directions etc. but 6 years later still can't get off them. Wishes she never started!
I took Gabapentin for Fibromyalgia but my side effect I couldn’t take. It swelled my legs from knees down. I was dragging my legs. I take Cymbalta 60mg and it works but when I have days of bad pain it doesn’t work. It works 95% for my depression.
Same horrible side effect for me from Lyrica, prescribed for nerve pain from shingles. Lower legs, ankles, and feet swelled up and purple veins now decorate my lower legs and feet. The Lyrica did what it was supposed to, but the cost to my body is too high a cost. 😢
Here’s the thing. I’m holding off on neck surgery, too. But if the nerve gets damaged by stenosis, where will that leave me? It’s hard to know where to draw the line.
This doctor’s speech seems almost slurred or slowed at times, could this be the side effects of the medication he is on? His speech reminds me of someone who has had a few drinks and they slow or drag out there words slower.
Thank you as was scared to take it and have sciatica .It has relieved my anxiety as don’t like to take pills but feel I need to mow as pain effecting my daily life .I will take it tonight and can’t wait to see how it goes 👍🙏
I started on neurontin for anxiety. I immediately stopped taking Zoloft and Busbar, because it brought my anxiety levels to zero. I haven't experienced any side effects.
I tried Gabapentin for severe fibromyalgia and had an awful reaction. I took one 200mg pill and it was like giving me a heavy dose of tranquilizer for 3 days. Just laid in bed completely incapacitated. Doctor told me if I'd take the full dose I'd have been in the ER. Awful stuff. Also refuse to take Cymbalta. Withdrawal is horrendous. Some of these drugs are worse than the illnesses they are used to treat.
Gabapentin was junk for me and they use it on everyone I know for polyneurapathy. Been on lyrica since like 2007, now this stuff works for me but I suffered going thru amytripalin, nortrypoline, gabapentin was first though. Sorry about the spelling been on lyrica so long forgot how to spell the meds: the burning mostly gone, stiffness is way less, none of the constant pain like it was. I was young like 34 when the neurapathy came in and fast, then the hands. Now 55. Still walking minus 2 toes
Australia. Post 4 operations L5-S1 replaced disk and fusion with nerve damage . Nothing explained other than reduce lyrics slowly . I worked hard to reduce , and now 25mg at night … 5 months post op.. still nerve pain , especially behind leg , knee and foot .. I hope I will be able to stop this med and hope I heal 🙌thanks for explaining what NOONE would
My doctor told me to take gabapentin for facial pain (possibly trigeminal neuralgia), anxiety and insomnia. 100 mg ar bedtime. After a week, still have my problems. Worried about side effects.
Ive been on gabapentin 2400mg a day for 30 years. Its eradicated my fibromyalgia pain. I will take it till i die..also take flexaril for my stage 4 sleep.
I have been taking gabapentin for about 9 months, but it doesn’t control my leg pain. It must be that it doesn’t work on some people. What did work was shouting at hubby. Now I go out in the car and sing rock and roll really loud. It must relax the nerves.
This drug is a wonderful drug.I started on 150 twice a day then went to 300 twice day and it has helped sooo much.Yes now adays Im taking far more than im meant too.But its feels so nice.
Get off it, go to a primary care doctor, pain management clinics have too many rules set on them, go to a physician, they can prescribe all the same things and more. Pretty much the only way to get oxycodone, and if you can use edible cannabis, that combo is a hit.
Just started on Lyrica 2 days ago for peripheral neuropathy. No relief yet and I feel poor mentally on 75mg. From what others say this may get better. I was on gabapentin before, getting better results but it makes me very tired/depressed even on only 300 mg with dinner.
Ask the doctor for a higher dose,, it may help.. - 75mg is not much at all.. - I had to get adjustment to 225 mg and the nerve pain finally disappeared.. - I did gain weight, but I rather be heavier than have that terrible pain in my spine/pinched nerve.. - Good luck.. 🌷
I believe either this drug or muscle relaxer gave me major brain zaps.i quit taking the both at the same time so im not sure, but my night time brain zaps have mostly disappeared
I take gabapentin every night, helps my pain a lot, I have fibermaglia couldn't live a daily life without it, only side effect I have is memory loss just a little but that comes with age anyway
I have taken Gabapenten for probably 2 years, script was changed to Pregabalin for 4 or 5 years. Prior to Gaba neuroIogist had me on oxy, taken off oxy due to new drug laws in Tennessee. I had automatic refills for Pregabalin at CVS. Now all of a sudden, the prescriptions are no refills. I am a 70 year old cancer and neurology patient, with diabetes, neuropathy and fibromyalgia. My urologist, oncologist, primary care doc and PAs and even RNs all say to take Tylenol for cancer pain and diabetic pain. The world of healthcare is getting meaner. These past few years are, I go to urgent care or the ER for very scarey medical episodes, tests are done but there is never any actual treatment.
I'm on Gabapentin and Carbamazepine for bilateral neuropathy in my feet. I also have a spinal cord stimulator. With all three of these treatments I still have very bad days.
I use it sporadically for insomnia (300 or 600). It enables sleep and even if I still cann't fall asleep, I can sure relax. No side effects for me other than some grogginess.
Thanks. Very clear, consice content. Gabapentin greatly growing my alliterative ability:) I was prescribed Gabapentin by my shrink for restlessness when trying to sleep. I was working a very stressful software engineering project and was often unable to get comfortable when trying to sleep. Esp on days without enough exercise. Quite effective. I don't use it too often, but have recently been using it or Lyrica for post op neuropathy. A couple of procedures on my hand due to OA. It's working pretty well. So much trauma to the nerves and tendons as well as bone.
I took lyrica and it was like poison. Zombie creator.
Hello i read u review my dad also take lyrica for legs and arms pain and i see on him same as u describe lose memorie on short term that being worse bad side effect others one are less harm
I try make him give up take them but dr told him pain will come back
My husband died this spring after being admitted for severe dementia.
( along with the arch supports)
Chin up!
I hear you. When I tapered off it felt like my eyes were sore for days. It was an extremely strange feeling. And my night vision was awful
Time to update the video- thanks
It sounds like you've found the proper balance. Blessings and congratulations to you for getting your life back🎉
My Doctor prescribed Gabapentin for my Neuropathy pain in my lower legs and feet...I took it for about 3 months but it didn't really help much other than I slept good at night.
Update?
I just found your channel. Wonderful episode and presentation. Love your style and way of educating.
Best explanation of this drug I’ve heard.
Nice job Doc👍

AWFUL !
Stay away from high fructose corn syrup, sugar, and processed foods.
So do I. Well said. It can also make people talk a lot. It’s not even prescribed in some countries now. In some countries people are getting compensation for being prescribed it.
Once you get hooked , you need more.. their are natural ways ! I'm happy you didn't go on ... Find throat cause, you just might find the cure.
Sorry that happened to you. It worked well for me. A Godsend for facial pain.
Lyrica, it's cousin, was the cause of the biggest fine of all time leveled against...Pfizer!
Nice analysis. Imagine a country where your doctor took the time to help u understand the drugs u r taking.
Ql
Without gabapentin i would not be able to drive let alone walk. My neuropathy is off the charts without it
In your 19 min video I learned more than 5 visits to my doctor.
STAY OFF DRUGS - especially this crap drug! HOW DOES he know there are no side effects, when we are being IGNORED about the side effects!!
Thanks for the great info Doc. Very scientific, yet understandable!
Rod
Calif, 77 year old with neuropathy.
This is probably rare but I do know a lot of people that had psychological issues with this drug like depression mood swings their emotions felt out of control on this drug perhaps this could wear off I’m not sure but as a drug that can with mental health issues it’s going to cause opposite effects in some people although I’ve heard of irritability with the drug I haven’t heard of anxiety mainly mood swings to depression and irritation
youll get used to it after a while
In my first week, I began having night terrors and over-sedation.
Not rare very common
Very very helpful podcast. I mentioned this before. I just started on Lyrica and I needed to hear this again if you’re out there, Doc, I hope you know how important this is down and I hope other people speak up and tell you, so… I listen to your other podcast and you’re very informative. You’re very easy to understand and I am very thankful for what you had to say! Mary from Ohio.
Gabapentin is a miracle for my pain. Stenosis. Pinched nerves. Calcium an spurs. Bonus I sleep like a baby. No side effects except, I have my life back!
Your lucky. I get serious side-effects from both gabapentin & pregabapentin.
@@williamallen7836what side effects do you get?
Is it making you far yet?
I fainted twice when I was first on Lyrica, but the side effect subsided. It is the only thing that brought relief for years.
That is horrible...you cut your hair off? Man I thought i had it bad.
Pregabalin, awesome for chronic back pain. Thanks for reviewing Doc !😊
I very much enjoyed this talk. Thank you for sharing. Very instructive.
one of the worse drugs i have ever taken, long lasting miserable withdrawal!
Then that probably was just a coincidence. You probably would have developed a thyroid problem anyway.
Thank you for sharing your experience and education about such complicated topics. It means a lot to so many.
Have you tried taking over the counter sleep aids?
I know a number of people who have done better on Cymbalta for fibromyalgia. It also has official indications for diabetic neuropathy as well as major depression and generalized anxiety.
I take 20 mg Cymbalta for neuralgic pain.
At the local pain management clinic they are firm believers in those. It did not work for me but I have a fairly ugly case of damage to the feet. Everything else you say seems to be real consistent with the people up there, they love the stuff.
Thank you ! Wonderful information!
I was prescribed but wouldn’t take it. Can’t afford to gain. Already trying to lose. Gabapentin did the same.
I was just prescribed pregabalin and I take my clonazepam in the morning and take take the pregabalin at bed time that won't hurt me will it ?
The weight gain is not the medication itself. It’s just bcs the food just tastes soooo good when on these meds. But if u control the food cravings, or if u eat as usual, u would not be gaining weight
I think a lot of 'withdrawal' complaints are simply that when a pain med is stopped, the pain comes back, sometimes with a vengeance, like a rebound effect. For someone in chronic, severe pain, anything that relieves it will be addictive for that person.
Confusion, dementia and delusions are listed as common side effects of this medicine.
No, those side effects are not “common”, just possible.
Scale of 100 points
Gabapentin 40 points
Lyrica 97.2 points
Total game changer for me.
Agreed! Lyrica is a miracle drug for me!
One of the best medications ever.
I take 500mg gabapentin twice daily for severe neuropathy pain. I've had very good results!
Doesn't that dosage make you awfully tired or drowsy at all?
Our daughter committed suicide after being prescribed Lyrica and Cymbalta, please if you take this medication & start having suicidal thoughts please speak to your doctor and get help
I'm so sorry for your loss 😢
@@anastasiasmith9164 thank you ⚘
I'm sorry for your loss. I will be praying for you 🙏
Good seeing you on You Tube. Good history and additional knowledge . Thanks. Charley Lawing
Can I just say you nailed it! I have fibro and I've tried gabapentin switched off to lyrica just recently and this has given my life back. Yes every single drug has withdrawal and side effects but my reward has been so awesome that I'll deal withdrawal if I have to.
Been on gabapentin for years , now Lyrica. Can't see living without it
Does gabapentin cause laryngitis as a side effect
@@gilliancarswell2595 sure don't think so
That's exactly how I feel. Lyrica game me my life back.
Thanks.
Thanks for your knowledge on this topic. I’m struggling to understand if I’d should keep taking it.
Amitriptylene is now being prescribed for nerve pain. Keep away from the gabapentinoids
It is hard on the liver and can cause bruises due to low ferritin
I have been on Lyrica for about 7 years, for a pinched nerve in my spine.. - It works wonderfully, and has taken the terrible pain away, after an adjustment to 225mg daily.. - I have gained weight unfortunately,, but not a few pounds, but,, 45 pounds.. But, I rather have the weight, than the horrible pain of a pinched nerve.. - Not everyone gains weight though, but I wasn’t so lucky in that department..
My husband had bone removed from his 3rd and 4th vertebrae pinching his spinal cord....pain is gone
Still uses lyrica 75 MG nightly for sleep
Gabapentin makes me feel aggressive, irritable and some confusion as well. Tried using again 10 years later for back pain and arthris pain. Same effect. Lasy year was prescribed Pregablin (generic) for restless leg. Works great..no side effects, sleep thru the night. Helps with arthris pain. Can you account for the difference. Gabapentin is off my list for pain relief, but couldnt do without pregablin. Thank you for your informative video.
Thank You So Much for this Helpful Information!
I'm happy for you. I know how pain ruins lives. My pain was Evil. Lyrica has helped.
Great, informative video!
Thank you!
Thank you
I have a long history of pain as a patient and I’m in pain management I was on gabapentin quite a while ago and I don’t recall why I got off of it
I will now consider it again
I will let you know how it goes
My best wishes always from Las Vegas Craig
Try amitriptylene.
❤Thank You For Positive Information!!!🎉
I take it for alcohol cravings 3 times a day. It provides moderate anxiety relief, and allows me to focus. 8.5/10

@@MK-pl4fr I was on gabapentin for years. Now Lyrica for 3. I'm doing fine.
@@MK-pl4fr I see that…
I took Gabapentin for Fibromyalgia but my side effect I couldn’t take.
Thank you. I was worried about having to take it.
Been taking for two years it works and is keeping me from going under the knife for neck arthritis.
It’s like a mild opiate withdrawal. The worst part is lack of sleep and tremors.
Thank you as was scared to take it and have sciatica .It has relieved my anxiety as don’t like to take pills but feel I need to mow as pain effecting my daily life .I will take it tonight and can’t wait to see how it goes 👍🙏
How did it go
@@IAmLegend9291he slept for 18 hrs I did after 300 mg
@@IAmLegend9291 🤔 perhaps still mowing, Idk, said they needed to mow.
I had bad side effects from both of them. Then dr wanted to give me Lyrica again. i just walked out of his office
Not awful stuff, you just had a bad reaction. Most people don’t.
I hope I will be able to stop this med and hope I heal 🙌thanks for explaining what NOONE would
My doctor told me to take gabapentin for facial pain (possibly trigeminal neuralgia),
anxiety and insomnia.
100 mg ar bedtime.
After a week, still have my problems. Worried about side effects.
I've been on lyrica for yrs. It has helped me with chronic pain.
Ive been on gabapentin 2400mg a day for 30 years. Its eradicated my fibromyalgia pain. I will take it till i die..also take flexaril for my stage 4 sleep.
Thanks very much, Doctor.
What are our alternatives? I would like to get off gabapentin
I cant feel any difference in my pain from this type of medication 💊! I have tried it over and over and still no improvement!
I was not able to think clearly when prescribed gabapentin for back pain. And it did not help with the pain. I will never take it again.
i've put on 65 lbs since taking lyrica & have memory loss
@markz 5891 is your symptoms like burning, numbness, a fleeing of something trickerling down the legs like water, night and day
I take 450 mg of Lyrica, I have to, all my nerves in my body are misfiring and muscle wasting, Lyrica stopped the muscle wasting.@@powerwalkwithmybaby
Thank you! This was very helpful information for me.
I have fibromyalgia and was put on these meds…. They didn’t work for me.
Will you please cover or discuss Cymbalta
I'm on Gabapentin and Carbamazepine for bilateral neuropathy in my feet. I also have a spinal cord stimulator. With all three of these treatments I still have very bad days.
You should look into vit B1 benfoitamine and MSM and magnesium all repair neuropathic pathways and the Mylan sheath
The side effects I experienced was pitting edema in my legs from taking gabapentin. I quit using it.
I use it sporadically for insomnia (300 or 600). It enables sleep and even if I still cann't fall asleep, I can sure relax. No side effects for me other than some grogginess.
Thanks. Very clear, consice content. Gabapentin greatly growing my alliterative ability:)
I was prescribed Gabapentin by my shrink for restlessness when trying to sleep.
Finally a good video about gabapentin .
