Kerala is mentioned as Keralaputo in a 3rd-century-BCE rock inscription left by the Mauryan emperor Ashoka.Pliny the Elder (1st century CE) states that the port of Tyndis was located at the northwestern border of Keprobotos. Periplus describes "a flourishing place with ship from Ariake coming to it and also Greeks". It was the capital of Keralaputra which is the same as Keprobotos of the Periplus, Coelobatras of Pliny 10 and Kerobatras of Ptolemy.
