The interior is now dated, no doubt. A bit unfair to compare the interior to Mercedes because for the price of this full size CUV, you barely get the smallest Merecdes GLC. The equivalent Mercedes is easily $25,000 more expensive than this car. I've owned gen 2 2007 and gen 3 2018 hybrid and love them both. All around great car.
I agree with Jacob, I'll buy a car on how it looks and how it drives, before I look at the infotainment, because most of the time I dont even use the screen. As long it has bluetooth I'm fine
My 2017 MDX is my 4th Acura. I remember seeing the 2004 TL on the highway, it was way behind me and the first thing I noticed were the bright simple round headlights and low stance. It slowly cruised past me... love at first sight. I bought a 2 year old 2004 (with 27k miles) a couple years later and kept it until around 185k miles. Zero problems. Then I went to a 2012 TL with shawd, black on black with grey gunmetal wheels, also used, pure stealth, felt much faster than the advertised numbers Acura had released. That was my favorite out of the 4. Unfortunately someone rear ended me and it was totaled. Next up was a 2010 MDX. This time my wife picked it and it was pearl white with beige interior. That was my least favorite, felt very grannyish. Again, zero problems except for the steering wheel having up/down slack which kept getting worse (most likely due to using my knees to drive and putting too much pressure on it). Traded it in for the current 2017 MDX shawd, feels like my old 2012 TL but lifted... black on black with those gunmetal wheels. Love the autonomous steering even though you need to remind it that you're actually behind the wheel every minute or so. It's basically fool proof, you cant get in an accident if you tried. The only cons for the last couple acuras I've had has been the dated interior. Why 2 giant screens stacked on top of each other? What's up with 50 old school buttons? It does feel like you're piloting a jet at night with all the buttons lit which is pretty cool. Now let's see how many people read this novel of a post!
Tom L I owned a 2017 MDX Advance, sorry to say it was very annoying to drive. Could not download Iphone information, Acura kept saying it was Apple’s problem, finally Three years later they finally admitted that it was a known problem but no solution. For some people not a big deal, but for somebody to spend a lot of their time in the car on the phone with customers it really sucked. Traded in at the beginning of this year for a Mazda CX9 signature, and have not looked back. The CX9 is a fabulous car and it is a lot of fun to drive, and the electronics work very well. Not to be denigrating, but Acura is not a luxury brand, they are a near luxury brand. The MDX brought a lot of value to the game, including a gorgeous interior, but it was more ticking off boxes than providing an excellent driving experience.
While the visor test is a fail because it doesn't go back, it's pretty large and seems to go all the way to the end of the window. I'd call that a conditional pass.
Test drove one today. Nice low roofline makes it look sporty. Great looks. Inside, perfect size, super comfortable. All the gauges are so comforting. Must admit, the info screen was a bit of a learning curve. But, you get over it. The car drives insane. Transmission is BAM. It just responds. Doesn't feel artificial. V6 aspirated is a joy. It handles like a much smaller vehicle. It puts the explorer, cx9, and even the x5 and q7 to shame. This is the most connected car of this class for me. Perfectly analog. Drove a Volvo XC40 afterwards and it felt like I was driving in a video game.
It's good to see Acura waking up from their 15 plus year slumber. Now, if they can get rid of the letters and go back to their old school names like Legend, Integra, Vigor etc that would just be epic. Hint Hint Acura, look at how good Lincoln is getting again and they went back to their old school names.
Got a 2018 MDX and loving it so far. I’m surprised it didn’t do better on the box test. I personally really like the infotainment. The dual screen is pretty awesome for my use.
The exterior should be generally the same as the current MDX A-Spec but with more functional vents, a proper quad exhaust, a nice body kit and wider tires. The interior will most likely just be a sportier version of the RDX A-Spec interior. Hopefully they give all the features of the Advance trim on the Type-S models
Grizzly B I am more concerned about the Type S engine. After all, it’s not a purely cisual A-Spec. I really hope they will add a turbo or even two, but in reality it’s probably just going to be the same naturally aspirated 3.5, but tuned to extra 40-50 HP.
Did it fail the visor test? It seems like it cover the whole door window without the need to extend. Which is super pass cause it cover from the front to the rear window
I have driven one of these. Yeah the visor is big enough to cover the window, but if you're shorter like me, that means the visor hits your face when you put it against the window.
My 09 has been a phenomenal vehicle, 333,000 km and still going strong. Great do-everything vehicle; handles well, comfortable, decent power, reliable. Last summer I towed a 21ft powerboat and 6 adults in the MDX, ~250 km round trip - no problem. I find the tech in Acuras is usually behind the competition but the trade off as you said is that it's tried and proven so will probably never break. Was going back and forth between this and the Pilot, thanks to this review I know what i'll be getting as a replacement when the time comes. Greetings from Barrie, ON!
I tried to buy Acura tlx, since after college about 4years ago, but when I opened the door, watched the interior, I changed my mind, I talked myself maybe next year, it will be better. NOW almost 2020! COME ON ACURA!
Cross shopped this with the Lexus RX, Infiniti QX60, 4Runner, Highlander and the Honda Pilot. I chose this because it was cheaper than the Lexus RX, had 3 row seats and a better AWD system. I didn’t choose the Pilot because for a little more money than the EX-L, you got better looks, better driving experience and better quality of materials. Base SH-AWD compares well to the Pilot Touring. Lots of features in the MDX base trim. Took the MDX last year in the snow. It handled exceptional and gave great confidence in the snow. Recently towed a 3,000 lb trailer for camping and was impressed by its towing capability. I usually use apple CarPlay so the infotainment isn’t bad for me. I feel the Lexus RX has the better interior but the MDX has the better exterior looks and driving dynamics. Pretty well rounded SUV in my opinion. And does not disappoint. Would I buy it again? Probably not- I’ll prolly go for a 4Runner or Tacoma. No need for luxury/entry level luxury vehicles in my life...
Just bought one of these in December. Was an unreal deal, with a great interest rate. More value than buying the RDX. Went in to buy and RDX ended up with a bigger vehicle. Dark grey Aspec with the red trimmed seats looks so good.
Personally, I just bought this car and the infotainment isn't much of a problem, yes it has 2 pretty low res screens and a low res back up camera. But in my opinion, it just works for daily commutes and has killer exterior and interior looks. My kids also like the comfy 2&3 row seats with the red stitching.
When your new video notification graphic popped up at 13:59 it kind of tricked my brain into thinking "hell yeah, a new Straight Pipes video to wa-" no wait, what? My brain is now trained like a little goldfish
Slightly doubtful they will see this, but on all newer Hondas and I would assume Acuras you can fully disable traction and stability control, its a combination of steps but it works like this: 1. Turn on car. 2. Parking brake off. 3. Press and hold brake. 4. Turn traction control on and off. 5. Parking brake on. 6. Release break pedal. 7. Turn traction control on and off. 8. Press and hold break pedal. 9. Traction control on and off. Found this out because of autocross in my 2018 Civic Si and it has worked on a 2018 Pilot as well.
I love the debate you had about the compromises shoppers have to consider when buying a car. Unless you have an unlimited budget you have to prioritize your needs/wants.
My favourite channel. You guys are the best. Your visor test and coffee cup test are so relevant. Thanks for your excellent work. Any truth to the rumors about the video coming out called, "When Yuri met Jakub"? Backstory would be cool
@@TheStraightPipes I guess I've missed it. Regarding this vehicle, I prefer the new 19 pilot, and not just for the infotainment. It just seems more complete. The mid model refresh did well.
Looked at both Pilot Elite and MDX Advance. The MDX is nice but the interior I think is nicer and more usable in the pilot and you get the brand new screen which pushed us over to the pilot. I do not understand why the MDX lacks the updated features of the pilot and it costs more? i like the exterior look of the MDX more but the practical design of the pilot is much better to live with.
I have the 2014 MDX first year of current generation with 6sp auto. I really like the car except the interior and yes the infotainment system and lack of actual buttons kill otherwise a superb SUV. Also absolutely trouble-free at 80k miles (not even a glitch). Super excited about next MDX gen. btw, the IDS system changes steering weight, little bit of throttle response and gear change ( sport holding gears longer)
The current Gen MDX is on the 3rd Gen SH-AWD, same as the TLX. Hydraulic based instead of 2nd Gen electromagnetic based like on the TL and previous MDX. The RL was the 1st Gen.
Nice review, thanks, guys! That's why I call Acura "mid-luxury" or "half-luxury". That's why they are generally more affordable cars than the "full luxury" Mercedes, BMWs, etc. Plus you get a good package with SH-AWD.
@@AcuraAddicted it would be nice if they spruced up their interiors like Infiniti and Genesis have ! Different colors, patterns and textures all play a part !!
Type-S trim is coming back. Would like to see a RDX Type-S and this as well. And hopefully Honda/Acura will put adaptive dampers on the A-Spec and Type-S.
Interior looks like it from 2012. And I'm honestly not sure if I can agree with Jakub that this car exterior looks good. I mean in this class there are tons of cars from both luxury and non-luxury brands that look much "better" (whatever better means). I.e. CX-9 - sexier and sleeker Durango/Grand Cherokee - manlier and looks more like a "real" SUV RX - fun, edgy, modern ... ... ... And you can go on and on. And the wired part: I actually think that RDX looks pretty nice for an SUV, but this MDX just doesn't work for me. P.S. As always, great review and thanks for a content!
Wish there was either a 5 seat MDX (prefer larger cargo space) or a V6 RDX... Come on Acura, the styling on these are already so great, you were so close!
Have to side with Yuri on the infotainment debate. This car isn't chump change and the graphics mirror the 2008 TL Type-S I once had. Was in the market for one as a secondary car and decide may as well just look at older 2011s and up lol. Also wish you could get the Elite with A-Spec package as you lose some features with the A-Spec, mainly the surround view camera. Great review as always fellas!
This is definitely the older one that still sell in the suburbs like crazy. But you can already see the new MDX tester cars around, meaning a new MDX should be out in the next year or so.
With a sweatshirt like that.....you need to change your opening to "Hi I'm Burt and I'm Ernie and we're going for a drive" Always enjoy watching your reviews
Just wanted to say I bought a black a-spec recently and your review is spot on! It has Android Auto which negates the navigation system but w/o it I would have passed on it.
Currently looking for a 3 row. Atlas is currently at the top of my list. Pilot is nice but push button transmissions belong in busses and that digital instrument panel is not as nice as VW's. The CX9 is probably the best compromise in this segment. Only time will tell if they fixed the rusting issues of older mazdas.
I bought this mdx same color... Pros: Looks Performance Seats Everything Cons Info system Moonroof is short compared with RSX Crome Exhaust pipes (Must be black)
Still worth to buy, it doesn’t matter if the interior is old. It does the job pretty well. It’s Acura and the other SUVs doesn’t stand beside in this price range Acura is much better in all aspects , resale value is also strong. It does everything for me. Best ride and mileage is also not bad and on top of it take regular gas as well, it’s not necessary to have premium gas into it.
You two are so well-balanced! I appreciate where Yuri's coming from, but Jacob's my man. Infotainment is important, no doubt, but my cars need to perform before all else. Infotainment is so far down on my priority list, it's almost invisible. The combo of the two of you makes your reviews perfection!
People complain about the double screen, but it works. Also the auto options for the hvac and seats means less pressing. Also who listens to the radio in 2020?
If I was in the market for a 3 row SUV this would be it. I can overlook the infotaiment for performance and exterior styling. Then again the new MDX should arrive in 2020 so I would wait too haha
Man Acura really needs to rework their interior to be more user friendly and modern. This interior doesn't look any better than the 2007 RDX I used to own.
The thing is, every current Acura car got mid-cycle exterior facelifts to match the new diamond pentagon grill design aside from the RDX that got a full new generation first and is no longer based on the Honda CR-V platform. It's been getting great reviews so far too. So when it comes to the dated interior of the MDX that explains why. Wait until the next generation which has already been spy shotted that is coming with the RDX style interior and a Type-S trim (turbo V6). The backlash is justified on here, but those saying the Acura brand is dead need to look into the RDX because that's the current car showing they're in the right direction. Acura has always been re-badged Hondas from the beginning of time (the current RLX is still the Legend internationally) but the RDX shows they're going to do more to differentiate the brands.
The 2nd generation MDX (2007-2013) is the best interior and most robust vehicle all around, but the newer models are lighter and pretty dope looking so that's a plus. No question about it, the best line of SUV in terms of versatility, dependability, and performance has to be the Acura MDX.
Yuri, please have a disclaimer at the start of any videos where you will be wearing your sarape. I need to run to my car and get my shades on before viewing. My eyesight thanks you.
Are Acura and Honda having a fallout out right now? In 2018-19, it looks like Honda is the "better" car brand. For your ILX/RDX/MDX videos, all I feel is "meh." Keep up the amazing reviews!
I lease cars so for me the deal has a lot to do with it. There was around a $50 per month delta in cost between the rdx and mdx. The mdx was cheaper and I was returning a 2016 rdx so I was already used the infotainment. I do have one gripe, some of my favorite apps are a little buggy on CarPlay they crash more often then I would like. I don’t have the a-spec but the seats and comfort in this vehicle is superb. As for interior, I have family that has a top trim 2016 or 2017 pilot and the mdx interior is substantially nicer. Especially once you go past the front of the cabin. Tons of plastic in the pilot once you get into the second row. Are there better cars? Sure there are but these actually leased well when I was in the market. I think it’s mainly due to the dated infotainment and it being an outgoing model.
Saw one of these at a gas station in blue. 100% agree on that being the best looking color. I couldn't stop staring. When you say it handles great do you mean it handles like a Honda Accord or what? Great review as always!
A Spec is always just an appearance package. It would be nice to have some performance upgrades with it too across the brand. I despise the Acura amber led daytime lights.
Acura makes some nice looking SUVs. Too bad about the infotainment and interior, it should be equal or better than what is in a Honda. Acura should put the Pilot interior into this ASAP and add a pano roof.
See the new RDX to see Acrua's next interior. The MDX has not been all new since 2014. Like all manufacturer, they do not refresh _all_ of the cars _every_ year so it takes time for the latest to reach all models.
To be honest, the Honda interior is wickedly better but at the same time the outside of the MDX is absolutely banging so if I really had to choose I'd go MDX because it is just the better car... the infotainment isn't like that bad better than most cars still
The difference between a moon roof and a sun roof is that a sun roof is not transparent glass, like old bmws used to be. You said pilot has a moonroof and mdx has a sunroof, and that’s just not true. They are different sizes perhaps, but both the same moon roof.
Is the interior too old for you, or do you not care and like everything else enough to buy it?

Oh cool... Another amazing SUV way out of my price range.
What suv is in your price range. Rav 4?
Try a Ford Escape, maybe a slightly used one too. But if you got to have aroomy car look into station wagons.
I love the debate you had about the compromises shoppers have to consider when buying a car. Unless you have an unlimited budget you have to prioritize your needs/wants.
Yuri and the coat of many colors.
Lol the Technicolor Dreamcoat
Bought a visor test shirt, and it just got here today! Love it! Great work guys, keep up awesome content!
My favourite channel. You guys are the best. Your visor test and coffee cup test are so relevant. Thanks for your excellent work. Any truth to the rumors about the video coming out called, "When Yuri met Jakub"? Backstory would be cool
Haha we've explained that a bunch of times in our live streams. Pretty much every live stream actually
@@TheStraightPipes I guess I've missed it. Regarding this vehicle, I prefer the new 19 pilot, and not just for the infotainment. It just seems more complete. The mid model refresh did well.
Nice addition of drone footage. GJ
I like how now that everybody knows where cliche corner is, you guys are feeling the freedom to do more aerial drone shots through it.
No one knows where it is 😉
these guys acura videos are dope!
Why do I all of a sudden want *Lifesavers* candy.
Me too
Looked at both Pilot Elite and MDX Advance.
Can we see an Alfa Romeo Stelvio review?
Feel like Kia telluride is gonna rule this segment once it releases
I think it will do well, and I think the Palasade will be turning some heads, too.
Porsche is doing good though...
@@AlAl-fu6ct you are a troll
The current Gen MDX is on the 3rd Gen SH-AWD, same as the TLX. Hydraulic based instead of 2nd Gen electromagnetic based like on the TL and previous MDX. The RL was the 1st Gen.
Nice review, thanks, guys! That's why I call Acura "mid-luxury" or "half-luxury". That's why they are generally more affordable cars than the "full luxury" Mercedes, BMWs, etc. Plus you get a good package with SH-AWD.
Acura Addicted well the lower models of Mercedes and BMW are far from luxury (hi there 320i), and the new RLX looks really opulent.
Bmw 3 series Mercedes c class all have cheap ass interiors lmao
@@trueG922 This is a seven seater SUV. Do not compare it with a small size sedan.
@@ascott2168 I know. Thing is Acura doesn't have much options when it comes to interior at all.
I.e.
CX-9 - sexier and sleeker
Durango/Grand Cherokee - manlier and looks more like a "real" SUV
RX - fun, edgy, modern
...
...
...
And you can go on and on.
And the wired part: I actually think that RDX looks pretty nice for an SUV, but this MDX just doesn't work for me.
P.S. As always, great review and thanks for a content!
I agree. It seems like the designer was stopped in the middle of the job.
Lost me with the RX...
The title is straight facts, we were so hyped to get one and we were so disappointed, ended up going with a QX60 for the space
Yay! Another Honda product review! And I’m a big Honda fan
Make that 2
@@shaanp_2260 Honda+!
That new front looks sick
Yuri, Jacob you guys should do a video on the 2020 or 21 MDX..
Love that shirt Yuri!
The Durango R/T would like to have a word with you!
They do make a V8 that is actually pretty impressive. It's not SRT insane but it's not boring
Yeah we drifted it in Quebec a few days ago
GoogleLeaveMyNameAlone new MDX is confirmed to have RDX interior according to spy shots
Straight Pipes merch store best seller: Yuri's sweater.
❤️-yuri
Love this vehicle! But that centre stack is just ancient. Good thing the price is nice!
With a sweatshirt like that.....you need to change your opening to
"Hi I'm Burt and I'm Ernie and we're going for a drive"
Always enjoy watching your reviews
Just wanted to say I bought a black a-spec recently and your review is spot on! It has Android Auto which negates the navigation system but w/o it I would have passed on it.
Are you going to upgrade to type s soon ? Or keeping your aspec ?
Currently looking for a 3 row. Atlas is currently at the top of my list. Pilot is nice but push button transmissions belong in busses and that digital instrument panel is not as nice as VW's. The CX9 is probably the best compromise in this segment. Only time will tell if they fixed the rusting issues of older mazdas.
How long have you guys been married?
Haha
When I initially started watching them, I s2g I thought they were a couple for like two whole months
I dont know about Jakub but Yuri got married last year :D (but I know what you meant)
Nah, they're just butt buddies.
Yea, i got a man crush on Yury..... damn!
I bought this mdx same color...
Pros:
Looks
Performance
Seats
Everything
Cons
Info system
Moonroof is short compared with RSX
Crome Exhaust pipes (Must be black)
My man!
People complain about the double screen, but it works. Also the auto options for the hvac and seats means less pressing. Also who listens to the radio in 2020?
I hope the 2020 interior would look much better
True that. Sweater on point. When do the sweater reviews start coming out?
Next session
MDX competes directly with Infiniti qx60, and somewhat to the Lexus RX.
I luv u guys ❤️ I watched your every single review 👍🏻
If I was in the market for a 3 row SUV this would be it. I can overlook the infotaiment for performance and exterior styling. Then again the new MDX should arrive in 2020 so I would wait too haha
Man Acura really needs to rework their interior to be more user friendly and modern. This interior doesn't look any better than the 2007 RDX I used to own.
You should do the Acura MDX sport Hybrid
Great vid guys. Compare to the CX-9 or maybe Ascent?
Love Acura! Love y'alls videos too!
Dudes rock a pretty cool sweater 😮
That hoodie reminds of those Selecta Rainbow Popsicles.
Will you guys test drive the LR Discovery sport? Or how about the new X5 and new GLE?
Really love your content guys! I watch every video 😁
The 2nd generation MDX (2007-2013) is the best interior and most robust vehicle all around, but the newer models are lighter and pretty dope looking so that's a plus. No question about it, the best line of SUV in terms of versatility, dependability, and performance has to be the Acura MDX.
Acura MDX dashboard infotainment interior design has been 5 year streak and not even a change??? even 2020 looks the same !!! gezz!
Nice sweater!!!!!!
hello Yuri and Jakub, please do review on Alfa Romeo STELVIO
Yuri, please have a disclaimer at the start of any videos where you will be wearing your sarape. I need to run to my car and get my shades on before viewing. My eyesight thanks you.
My wife still loves her loaded 2017 MDX.
The fisrt song is In The Wind - Jesse Lawrence feat. Revel Day ;)
Guys you should test drive the hybrid MDX Sport. It is faster and does 27 mpg
Finding one is difficult though
I love the a spec but 360 degree camera kills it for me, that’s why I’m going for advance but I hate the captain rear seats
Better because SH-AWD not fwd
I really miss the old times...when you guys used to do the budget cars...like the Elantra,civic,etc....😢
There's no times to miss. We're still doing everything
You guys need to review a fiat 500 abarth. We just got one and it is soooo good!
There is also a 5.7 for the Durango so it's not just 3.6 or SRT there is a middle option
Yuri, where did you get that hoodie? I like it a lot!
A Spec is always just an appearance package. It would be nice to have some performance upgrades with it too across the brand. I despise the Acura amber led daytime lights.
Can u guys please do the 2019 Volkswagen Jetta gli when it comes out I’m super excited about it and you guys are my absolute favorite review channel
Ummm, you missed Audi (Parent VW). Just sayin' . Great review as usual, guys!!!
Exhaust needs some adjustments. Not quite lined up with the opening.
Review the 2019 VW GLI as soon as possible. I have a feeling it’s a winner
Hey Straight Pipes, can you please review the new 2019 Honda CR-V anytime soon? It’s one of my favourite cars and I did a visor test in my own 15 CR-V
