🎥 Video Summary:
If you're new to the IT field contracting industry or an experienced tech looking for fresh ideas, this video is for you! I’ll show you my complete work van loadout, refined over 25 years in the field. Having a well-organized setup is crucial-it saves time and ensures you're prepared for any job.
I carry essential tools like multi-position ladders (Little Giant is my favorite), a range of cables (I stick to Cat6 plenum), and custom DIY storage solutions like PVC tubes for fish sticks and drill bits. Organization is key, so I use Flambeau tubs and DeWalt organizers for everything-wall plates, patch cables, J-hooks, toggle bolts, and more. This keeps my van tidy and makes it easy to find what I need.
For fieldwork, I rely on key tools like cable testers, a laser level, my laptop for console access, and two tool bags: one for general tools and another for cutting and drilling equipment. I also have smaller organizers for screws, RJ45 ends, Velcro, and other small items.
This video is packed with tips and ideas to optimize your field setup.
I love the idea of using a gig bag for the panduit and unistrut. Smart.
We'll see how well it holds up. I'm sure the Panduit will be fine but I'm wondering if the c channel and all thread will tear it up. It's a new idea.
Awesome video. I’m constantly re-arranging my field equipment. Always trying to make it more efficient and concise.
It's a never ending battle
Thank you for this video, Mike, very cool
Those starting out can learn from this video and use it to help them organize themselves and their tools. I love the PVC tubes idea; I will go out and do the same myself, thank you for sharing! It was a good point to mention the raceway by Legend. It's great to have it when you come across the need to run cables on the surface instead of inside the walls. It's nice to see that you label everything; it is helpful and makes finding what you are looking for faster. I label things as well.
If I may add to your tool listing:
Klein Tools 3-Piece Hook and Loop Kit 80144 - I recently acquired a fantastic new tool. It acts like a tape dispenser but for Velcro. You pull the Velcro strip and cut it with the tool's chopper. Why did it take so long to make it, I don’t know. It has super strong magnetics, so when working on a telco or four-post rack, you can firmly attach it to the rack and use it. Plus, it has a belt clip. You can buy white or black Velcro.
Milwaukee SHOCKWAVE 10-24 UNC Steel Impact Rated Drill Tap Bit, along with a medium size vise-grip in case you encounter a broken rack screw lodged in the rack hole. The drill tap bit works great to clear up and re-thread those damaged rack holes. When someone is impacted, drill happy and doesn’t hand test the threads first and use a 10-32 screw in a 10-24 hole and vise-versa.
Rack screws were a good point that you brought up; through the years, I have found that the brand RackGold for me, is the best quality out there; they are steel and made in America. Sometimes, the cheaper aluminum ones strip too easily, and then you can’t take them out.
Hole Saw Kit - to make holes in the drywall to pull cables through and, of course, to cut holes into cabinets or tabletops to pull computer cables through as well
I use colorful round dot stickers to mark APs in the ceiling if they are not mounted on the outside. Sometimes, I find bullseye dots cool and easy to spot on the ceiling surface when you are trying to locate them.
Great ideas! Thank you so much for sharing your tips and adding to the community!
If you haven't ever used them, I'd suggest a pair of screw extraction pliers. If you come in behind someone that went a little overboard with an electric screwdriver you'll think they're the best tool ever invented. Mine are Vampliers brand but I've heard the Knipex brand are good too.
@@markmiller2361 you know how you finish a video and afterwards you remember all the things you forgot? Lol thanks for that. I usually carry a screw extraction kit BUT I didn't know they made pliers. Really cool. Thanks.
@@fieldtechacademy I mainly do POS work so they may be more relevant too me, but I figured since you were having a tool discussion that I would mention them.
@@markmiller2361The more information for the community the better. I can't know everything.
