I fellowshipped in Hillsong London for two years and I do concur that what is shared is mostly for new believers and in the long run it is not sustainable for growth. What will build you up is the gospel(grace) like Acts 20:32 says .
It is the same with most Mega churches focusing on the pop culture and unfortunately missing the mark. Yeshua said go, make disciples not converts; because a disciple is a disciplined follower of Christ hence the emphasis on the discipline.
I definitely get you my dear sister however, going to a church which will remind you of your sin, using your words is not ideal either. You have been translated from the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of light and so you have now become a saint, a new creature old things have passed away. Moreover read what Hebrews 10:2 says ......the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins.. Romans 2:4 says God’s goodness which leads men to repentance...not your sins, short comings, experiences or mythological ideas. ..John 17:3 Eternal life is knowing the father and the son ...Remain blessed!

Oh my goodness. I relate! I was “saved” at Hillsong Sydney in 2000. I had been spiritual all my life exploring things including reading tarot cards for a living. Once I became a Christian I stopped all that. I was sucked into home groups, women’s mornings, prayer groups.
At the time I was a single mum to a baby boy. These are some of the things that happened to me and why I left and know there is not sound mature biblical teaching and a lot of it is like motivational seminars. Even their songs? Often wording used twists scripture but you need to know your Bible to pick up on that. So, here we go.
    1. I joined a new Christians Bible study group and got concerned with the way a teacher was explaining the context of certain scriptures. I’d go away and study the text, use a concordance to check I was right. I was in a small group and at times this wrong teaching made others feel belittled or patronised. So I started to ask questions and politely challenge him. I got a phone call from a senior female pastor literally saying this “we don’t like people who rock the boat here, challenging leadership is not on and I suggest you keep your views to yourself or we may ask you to leave”
    Yup.
I was a baby Christian and was both upset and shocked. I stopped going to the Bible teaching group.
    2. I hosted a weekly night group in my home run by two married very young 20 year olds. The group had about 12 of us in it. Again I was seeing that it wasn’t always biblical and when people had questions they’d guide you back to the “weekly teaching” given to these group leaders.
At this time I was experiencing genuine demonic attack. Actually seeing dark spirits. I researched the Bible and good books and learnt because I’d dabbled in tarot cards, other new age stuff that I opened a spiritual doorway. The devil didn’t like I’d jumped camps. I’d ask for help. I’d show scriptures of Jesus casting out demons and telling followers not only to do the same but we have the power to.
Bringing up deliverance prayer or ministry was met with this from everyone “you were fully healed at the cross so no demon can come against you” Pardon? The Bible teaches us constantly we will be attacked, that the devil and his minions are real. The book of Revelation outlines how much of the darkness will hit our world. I was really suffering.
Then someone who did it in secret as so scared to be found out told me of a pastor of a ministry who did deliverance ministry and prayer and specifically did it for Hillsong members who couldn’t get this help in their churches. These people were scared to say they’d gone to him. He was the most Godly man is ever met. Sadly he passed a few years after helping me but he healed many people.
    3. One day I arrived to a Sydney service late as my baby had been a nightmare to get to church with. As I walked in Lead Pastor Brian Houston stopped speaking, pointed at me and said “if you can’t show God respect to be here on time then leave”. I’m not kidding. So an Usher asked me to go. Everyone was looking at me. I sobbed in my car, I was a brand new Christian.
I had many other awful moments and got the message if I visited other churches now and then it was not accepted. I began to feel it was cult like.
I eventually went to another church called Dayspring in Sydney in distress where on the weekday two lovely women spent 3 hours praying with me and comforting me. I attended a few services and was very impressed at how it felt God was first, not man, not flashy technology or posh buildings. The teachings were so different and I blossomed as a Christian. One day I’ll never forget the Pastor starting to preach then stopping and saying “God wants to do something different today” he threw away his notes and as worship played led the whole church into hours of meaningful repentance, healing prayer and fellowship. You could feel the Holy Spirit. I was water baptised there and it was wonderful. Great genuine people and humble leadership.
Sadly over many years after I moved north I had awful experiences in other Pentecostal churches too. I learnt I had the gifts of discernment and prophecy so often God would show me things in the spirit others didn’t believe. One church told me the leadership was fiddling the tithes and God told me to stop giving! Of course I thought this can’t be God. However, a year later it was revealed they had been using church giving to buy expensive land and houses! They were stepped down by the Assemblies of God (an umbrella Pentecostal group of churches that also has bad issues) and moved to be under pastors and allowed to repent.
I also underwent true spiritual abuse, lies spread about me and learnt if I ever asked questions I was labelled a Jezebel.
I’m now living back in England where I was born. I lived in Australia from age 10 for 30 years. I’ve struggled to feel safe in any church and with serious illness, an abusive 14 year marriage to a so called Christian man I’m not in a church but I’ve held on to my faith. After Covid hopefully settled here I am going to try many different churches trusting God to guide me.
I saw things from leadership that was so wrong after volunteering in so many areas of church. In one large church trying to mimic Hillsong I was praying and just said in my heart “God, where is Jesus” and immediately heard “He is outside waiting for when leadership invite him in”. I was really touched and sensed Gods grief.
This church raised £2 million pounds then spent it on air-conditioning, a cafe and a giant McDonalds type playground. At the same time they closed the single mothers ministry, the bus that brought the homeless to church and other community outreaches. I was literally told “it’s best you find another church” for minor questions that a true church would have no issues answering.
I’m an author and plan to write a book on the wrong and dangerous teachings and leadership in some churches, predicted in the Bible, how these men and women serve their own agenda, not Gods agenda. How you have to pay a lot to attend a flashy women’s conference instead of it being free to those who need God. I also got married twice to men who appeared to be strong Christians, I’d wanted to have a Godly marriage and serve in ministry so much. With both, almost immediately after marriage the Bible didn’t exist, no prayer, no worship at home and I was pulled away from Christian friends and church. Then the abuse escalated.
It’s in the Bible about wolves in sheep’s clothing and also men who prey on vulnerable women. A lot of churches tell women who dare to say they are being abused to forgive, to try harder to be a Godly wife, to pray more....it’s dangerous and I lost years and years of my life, health and opportunities to be truly happy. I forgave a zillion times but it makes no difference.
I want to write a book for women sharing how to really look for a man truly grounded in Jesus and who puts God first, how to avoid deceit Tce churches and where in the Bible God speaks of hating abuse and those who inflict it. I’d also like to write a devotional for these women also. I see all the signs of end times and soooo many Christians being fooled and led astray which was foretold.
My prayer is I can in time find a healthy, outward focused church where I can be the hands and feet of Jesus. So I totally get your journey and sadly it’s in other mega churches too. God will sort the chaff from the wheat. There is an excellent lot of books out there about spiritual and church abuse and one called Wolves in Sheep’s Clothing but I can’t recall the author.
God bless you for your channel and God bless anyone struggling. Don’t give up, pray that God shows you a biblical healthy church where Ge is invited in.
    Jeremiah 29:11 🌺

Wow, I am so sorry you have gone through so much church hurt and abuse. I’m astonished and really admire how you’ve remained faithful to the Lord, I know so many people who have been hurt by the church that end up resenting God (even though we know the Lord is not at fault it’s just that we humans are so corrupt) and they separate from the Lord. Thats a beautiful testimony still even though so much pain is involved and just keep pushing and remembering God is by your side and He will not leave you even in the darkest and loneliest moments. The devil will try and come and whisper lies into your life and mind but remember Jesus loves you and He will never forsake you. I really really admire your strength, it reminds me about how Joseph remained faithful even though he suffered bad experiences one after the other but in the end God gave him the victory over his enemies and God still got the glory! Keep pushing sister, may God bless you ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Very insightful video. I think every mega church struggles with the same thing...it starts with the focus on glorifying God and Jesus and then over time, it loses that focus, especially as it grows bigger and bigger. It's an easy thing to do. My best church experience has always been in a small group, worshipping God together in fellowship.

I pray they continue but whether or not NOTHING I learn about any pastor or church is going to rock my faith in God and his son Jesus Christ. I totally get you, I felt this at The Dream Center in LA years ago, the worship was so pizzazzy, I know maybe they were trying to reach the inner city youth, but it was so distracting and everyone had to “look good” and it felt very much like a high school vibe and who is “in and popular and cool“, so I am so glad I am not there anymore because really all of that is fluff. What we need is to be excited about the word of God and preaching the truth mightily and strong! Yes I don’t like a church that is about entertaining either, I’m so happy God has captured your heart and is having you grow deeply in Him, that’s beautiful. Also, so many Pastors from Hillsong are resigning or got fired and Brian Houston just stepped down, so looks like God is wanting to Clean this house up, praise God!

Great video, Jenncysworld! Essentially, you noticed that Hillsong emphasizing themselves above God and His word. It can happen very slowly and can transform church into a performance where people come primarily to see the people and not hear or see what God says in His word. And I agree with what you say, God will use everything for His glory even things that are incorrect in the church, but we should also use discernment to call out what is incorrect in love.
Question: How were the responses of your church community when you would bring up your concerns things about the church that were unbiblical? Did they just ignore you? Did they feel like you were unbiblical? Were they use to it because of how a lot of others question Hillsong?

Firstly, I'd like to say I'm sorry that you hear a lot of negativity whenever you mention hillsong. I'd also like to say, it isn't for everyone. Many people bring friends there and then bring them to their home church after their friends have become Christians. Unfortunately, it's not just people from hillsong who doesn't read the whole bible. Many Christians actually don't. Especially the ones who grew up in church. And I was one of them. Mainly because whenever I opened the bible, I felt like I already know the story and I've heard it multiple times. I'd also like to point out that the people on stage, the band and pastors etc. Their neighbours wouldn't have known what they've done or where they've just been. That is, in Australia anyway. They are not as big in Australia as people think they are in Australia. A lot of people in the Australian church - the locals have no concept of how big they are overseas. But having said that a large part of the church and their volunteers are college students from overseas. And unfortunately, for those, there are many who are more fans than people who are just attending a local church. But you are right that it is easy to get sucked into a lot of things going on because it is very heavily events oriented. There's tons of events happening throughout the year. And there are positive and negative side towards it. The script that you mentioned in the connect group are supposed to be bible studies from Brian's preaching. And the thing as well is that, bible reading is encouraged depending on your leaders. I have heard many leaders say not to just follow what they say blindly and to read it in the bible and check it out for yourself. But I do understand that unfortunately, there are leaders who doesn't expressly say so. Having said all that. It is so good to hear that you are continuing to grow in your faith. And continuing to read the bible and exploring what God says. It is always good to listen to preachers and read books from different Christian denomination. Because there are pastors who are really good at expounding and doing an exegesis of the scriptures. Coming from a conservative church growing up, I see the importance of that. But I also see the importance of knowing how to apply what you've learned from the bible practically and not just knowing all the exegesis in your head. 😊 also, really great that you found a home church.

Maybe you need to put something like this in the video description because it puts Hillsong in a very negative light. I am in Australia and our church is wonderful BUT, I do not worship the church, it's Pastors or staff, I worship God through his son Jesus Christ.

I must admit that I find it hard to accept her having a net worth of $25M (not including her jet worth, at least $10M, & other non-liquid assets...). She espouses the "name it & claim it philosophy", saying God doesn't want us, as His children to be sick, or poor, yet in the scriptures, only two people in the bible, Enoch & Elijah, were "translated" (reaching heaven without dying). Paul also asked to be healed three times & was denied each time (2 Corinthians 12 verses 7-9). Maybe she also forgets that the Saviour never owned a home (Luke 9 v 58) & only owned one cloak at His crucifixion. She also ignores the scripture found in 1 Timothy 2 verse 12, forbidding women from teaching men. I could go on but will not. These are only examples of where Joyce's views clash with scripture. Justin Peters covers Joyce & other preachers with the same philosophy in a superb sermon called "Clouds Without Water" (found on TH-cam). Again, Christian love, from my corner of the world to yours.

That’s really great to hear how you’ve consecrated yourself to understand that the main purpose of church gathering is to glorify God. It was one thing I’ve struggled with as a young believer but I was willing to let God strip that away from me and I completely made my worship about God

This subject is true in many good large churches. You can get too wrapped in their “program” and just limit your personal walk with God. The Bible is so rich. I enjoy thru the Bible style of preaching and teaching with a challenge to think. Great subject. I also very much enjoy the HS music I have downloaded for myself.

My German friend took me to a Hillsong church in London a few years ago, she helped out with the band. The production and the vibe was about as far away from what I would normally associate with a church, it was all very impressive! When the collection could be made via an app I just had the feeling that money was the overriding factor in it all..

i like your video. New Christians should learn at their own pace and absolutely question everything! Christianity is the only religion i know where you choose to personally enter a relationship with God. Its important that you develop prayer and scripture disciplines that suit your individual nature.
I have attended the main campus a few times. I stopped going after they asked the congregation to stand and applause the pastor coming onto the stage to give a sermon.

Thank you for sharing and what you had to say was very interesting. Because I used to be part of hillsong city campus. You are right about the church is to entertain you. I felt it was one great show. I used to go several times on weekends and volunteered a great deal there.
With the members there, they were polite and friendly, but the more I got into hillsong I would see that there are people can hurt you such as as the leaders there.
In the end I felt hillsong like some rock concert. The VIPs would get the best seats in the house. You will never get a chance to speak to the main pastors there.
I felt it was more of a rock concert at hillsong conference. I volunteered there several times and at times really put off with how some things were run such as not allowing non paying members to the conference and wanted to go in and see it. Or if they don't have a ticket with them. People had to pay lots of money to go to this conference.
This conference cost a great deal of money and that money would be better spent on other projects.

Interested as I am just starting to attend Hillsong in Australia and sense it is a motivational church for prosperity. which is like a Tony Robbins seminar and networking.I'm more interested in spiritual and learning about a relationship with God. Hillsong seems like a big youth camp and not many older people attending except for. Brian Houston and BobbieHouston.. BUT where. are their PEERS as in their Age group? Hillsong Church is pretty light, and often entertaining and doctrinally unsound. Would recommend going to a church that is doctrinally sound, and helps the flock look within and ask the hard questions about sin, surrender, and redemption, and ultimately how to deepen your walk with Christ every day.
However, many of Hillsong’s worship songs are lovely and can be used to supplement the depth of the walk you may be on

@jennysworld I am so excited about your journey with God and may His Holy Spirit keep you till the Day of the Lord comes.
After many years of being in ministry I would like to say this; different ministries have different approaches to ministry largely because of their mandate and calling from God.I say this because of being in many different churches across the spectrum.
Hillsong is what they call a seeker sensitive church; everything they do is designed to pull people into the kingdom at all cost and get them to stay long enough so they start growing......the truth is if they started calling you out on your sins from the beginning; you probably wouldn't have gone to church......as per your video.......their mission is being accomplished.
After the initial steps to growth which is called the 'outer courts' the believer starts to yearn for deeper intimacy with God which sounds like its where you are right now; you go into the 'inner courts' some are able to stay at Hiillsong or 'Seeker sensitive ' churches and still enter the 'inner courts' others need to go elsewhere in order to grow 'alot go to churches which are more directin doctrine and not necessarily big in size, all however will end up in the ' most Holy place' which is in an intimate relationship with Holy Spirit himself.
Our discipleship journeys vary , it always saddens me to see how we bash each other on when we are on our road and discover new things and levels in God.
My sincere prayer is that we ' The Body' of Christ begin to see how God uses the different parts of the Body which are various ministers and ministries , churches, styles etc to bring about His objective which is The body of Christ.

Heey! Just found your video! No disrespect at all, but just saying that Hillsong doesn't push any of their things on you, if you don't want to be involved, you don't have to. I have been a part of Hillsong for almost 4 years now and I absolutely love it! I don't attend connect groups or many other events, but I am a part of a team for one service, because I love doing it. And I have people on team who only show up once in a while, because they are busy with their lives. And I think every person finds a church that suits them and their lifestyle. Hillsong is mostly for new christians, to help them find community, encouragement, friends, support etc. But it is your decision to make friends outside of church, plan your time and go do other things. And when people (from church) do things wrong, just remember that they are just people and church is a place for all - not just the perfect ones. Even the leaders can fail, didn't David fail? I think people put so much pressure on churches, when its our own responsibility to choose our community, what we do with our time etc. Church is just a gathering of people of all kinds and stories and people will always fail, nobody is perfect. Werent the pharisees the "annoying ones" in the New Testament of how ignorant they were? I really dont think there is a perfect church, because its full with people. But I do think its beautiful when one finds a church they can call home and then they stick with it, through the highs and lows, because again - church is just a gathering. All the love, Linda

I can find myself in your story, only I came from a shallow minded baptist background and came to discover Hillsong Berlin. I nearly served there for 2 years anf they all tried to manipulate you under God's Kingdom and community. It was a hard learning lesson when I noticed they just drop you like a brick once you leave their church. Now I'm a spiritual Christian and at peace, I don't need a big community to find my own validation. God and Jesus are enough.

I personally been involved with Elevation Church and even though the people were being the nicest to me, something felt so odd. God has given you the gift of 'discernment of spirits' which is described in Scripture. One should not judge a church per se' ( the book of Revelation) because God and Christ will do that. Nevertheless, there is a standard of worship set by the Father, God and true worship is of the Spirit and Truth. If one is truly sincere about following Christ. Paul tells the congregation(s) : "Do what they say but do not do what they do." Some preach the Word out of selfish ambition but Scripture states, nevertheless, Christ is preached. I agree a smaller congregation seems to be more intimate in fellowship and have much in common. The Spirit will guide. The Book of John (3;5) states that without water an Spirit, no one shall see God. One must be Baptized into Christ to receive the Holy Spirit. This comes by total surrender of one's life and Trust to God ,The book of Acts describe baptisms and "hence at a later time received the Holy Spirit. May God continue to reveal His Will to you.

Music and art and even fashion that you are in are gifts of God. So we should use our gifts to honor God more than using it to sing and honor humans.
I appreciate very much the many god given songs and music that God has given us through Hilsong and other Christian artists. These people could use their gifts to sing and promoting fornication, impurities, drugs and much ungodly things. But they serve God as God had called them too. Bear in mind that non of us are perfect. And Hilsong church and Christian artists are all human beings. Instead of criticizing on social media we should pray for each other.
People who listen to Christian artists and go to big or small churches each has tge choice to keep the focus on God instead of worshipping the messengers. We cannot put the blame on the messengers when we had made the mistake to be one of those that had put man or intertainment over God.
I had never in my life felt that a singer or a song writer or a preacher is more important than God. I think we should be thankful for God for good leadership and gifted people that God has gifted to lead worship... EXACT TO LEAD WORSHIP and THE ONE WE WORSHIP IS GOD! Good worship songs that point us to God are something God has given us to bless us to help us do justt what He wants us to...That is to worship God. The fact that humans beings have the tendency to idolize things and other humans above God is because this is one of our core disease as fallen men. I really feel that it is wrong that you keep making videos criticizing Hilsong Church or any individual of our brothers and sisters famous or not famous who still find it fruitful to go to big churches. I feel you might have just well keep going to big church and put your focus on God. You see the songs being sung in these churches are completely about God. I had not heard one Hilsong song that has put man over God. So you should let the words of the songs lead your focus on God instead of put your focus on the messengers/pastors/singers. You should focus on the scriptures being read and shared instead of solely relying on other people of the church to tell you about God. You can seek God in your own time whether you are attendingbig or small church. I cannot see why it was Hilsong fault that you did not seek God on your own. I cannot understand why it is the fault of the musicians and worship leaders fault that you chose to idolize them instead of letting the gift God had given them to bring your focus on God? And why is it worshipping God with good music is less good for you than bad singers. It is sad that GOOD GODLY MUSIC HAS BECOME TO YIU ONLY INTERTAINMENT. There are just too many so called Christian TH-camrs that wasting hours and hiurs and hours of their life and time to make videos criticizing other Christians. Unless we see one of our brothers and sisters sinning consciously we have no business of pointing our fingers on them just as hobbies for our "spare time". I feel like these so called leaders, men and women of God that you are criticizing must not have had it very easy carrying the responsibilities as leaders for so many people. I think we should pray for them instead of making videos time and time again criticizing how they are not perfect. Sometimes it is us ourselves that chose to put someone on the pedestal and instead of repenting from that we put the blame on other people. I don't know what your motive is for keeping making these kind of videos. But you should pray about if you should continue to keep doing this. I feel that you truly love the Lord and I hope you will seek the Lord about what to put on your videos. The Lord bless you

Hillsong has a real problem especially with it's leaders of rudeness and elitism. If you are just a volunteer or even a congregation member the leaders rarely will speak to you and will even be quite rude. We had a lead sound guy come to our small church where the volunteers there are new and he was rude to them constantly however sucked up to the Pastors/leaders of our church this was a direct culture I could see was set from the Pastor of this specific Hillsong church.

You'll have a good job and the women of your dreams, you'll get this and you'll have that blah blah blah put money in the pot to became closer and its all a bit of a fantasy. There is some corruption that goes on within this church as well. Its a nice place to go to tho.

A very strange scottish man lead me to christianity. He was quite odd and did strange things. He would tell us these stories how God would tell him to do certain things and it would be the right thing to do to bring someone to christ. Years later I was thinking how odd he was and asked myself out loud why he did such strange things and how could that even be good at bringing people to God. The moment the words left my mouth, I heard a voice in my head saying, what he did worked, you yourself are testamony. For all the sins of Carl and for all his strange ways, you yourself came to know about Jesus through that crooked sticks work which you address.

Your focus should only be on God. Not on church or a pastor or it's culture. While they help you to come to know the Christ, only Jesus can save and heal you. There is no obligation for anyone to be attached to a church. Once you are born again, you can seek God through Holy Spirit and bring others to God. It's a spiritual journey with God and not necessary with a Church establishment. Church is only there for you to help. And if a church is becoming over demanding or a cult like, its a big red sign.

With the terms you were serving, I for one would not say it was wrong but following on the building of where you belong. I see your move as an oppotunity for expansion of the church that you failed to realize. you discovered things u thought werent right? but you JOINED THEM. listen people, when you JOIN THEM you are AGREEING to their views. then begins the brainscrub because THEY ALWAYS KNOW WHATS BEST RIGHT?

I "joined" them as a non-christian knowing nothing about the gospel and church. As I kept growing in my faith, I noticed more and more things that are "off" about Hillsong, so I left. That I would say, is a very natural process for new believers

Dear Jenny you experienced a lack of depth in HS. HS is inflated ego self worship; devoid of humility or humble life style. Jenny you need to study Christian church history to understand how the Gospel of Christ was applied to church organization, leadership, core faith beliefs , practices, and faith tradition. Look up Fr Josiah Trenham on TH-cam ; he is a priest of the Eastern Orthodox Church that upholds The Gospel of Christ, preaches salvation of Christ, worships in the ancient Christian traditional way. Jesus Christ came to us from the East, not NY or Sydney. We can’t repackage Jesus Christ into a western hipster celebrity. Jesus said:,
Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

I’m not an expert but it sounds like hill song is more like a para church vs church body. It also sounds like a cruise ship pretty comfy. And.....Carl Lentz was a douche bag !
